The aim of this study was to assess the effects of deep-frying palm oil on a number of sperm and biochemical parameters with or without low- (Ex1) and high-intensity (Ex2) swimming exercises. Mice (32 BALBIc type) were equally divided into four groups (control, palm oil, palm oil+Ex1 and palm oil+Ex2). The increase in epididymal fat weight in case of using palm oil was normalised in both exercises. The percentage of abnormal sperm increased in the palm oil and palm oil+Ex2 groups (p<0.01 and p<0.001 respectively) whilst there was not significant different from control group in palm oil+Ex1 groups. An increase in total cholesterol after palm oil was not reversed by either swimming exercises. The increased level of triglyceride in case of palm oil with heavy exercise was higher than the control (p>0.05), palm oil and palm oil+Ex1 groups (both p<0.05). The comparison to the control group showed that the increase in plasma molecule and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in palm oil and palm oil+Ex2 exercise groups were significantly higher (p<0.05 and p<0.01 respectively). In contrast, a significant increase (p<0.01) in testes MDA level after using palm oil was significantly reversed in both light and heavy exercise groups (p<0.007 and p<0.01 respectively).

Summary: The Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 has caused global panic due to its contagiousness and multiple spike protein mutations. REGN-COV2, a cocktail of neutralizing monoclonal antibodies, has shown effectiveness against Omicron and plays an important role in the treatment of COVID-19. Additionally, melatonin, with its antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects, may also be beneficial in preventing severe symptoms in immunocompromised and elderly patients.

Summary: This study focused on the effects of the ketogenic diet (KD) on oxidative posttranslational protein modification (PPM) in epileptogenesis. The results showed that KD had a protective effect on the kindling model of epilepsy, but also caused qualitative modifications in brain proteins. Further research is needed to understand the relationship between calorimetric images of brain homogenates and protein modifications.

Relationship of NLRP3 inflammasome with periodontal, endodontic and related systemic diseases

Revan Birke Koca-Unsal, Ahmet Ozer Sehirli, Serkan Sayiner, Umut Aksoy

Summary: NLRP3 inflammasome plays an important role in oral and general health, and its involvement in the pathogenesis of periodontal and periapical diseases suggests it as a potential target for anti-inflammatory therapies. The host inflammatory response and the initiation of inflammatory reactions are determined by the NLRP3 inflammasome, which is implicated in various diseases. Understanding the role of NLRP3 inflammasome in periodontal and endodontic diseases may provide new perspectives for the treatment of these inflammatory conditions.

Monitoring of canine pregnancy by considering Anti-Mullerian hormone, C-reactive protein, progesterone and complete blood count in pregnant and non-pregnant dogs

Summary: In this study, the serum concentrations of anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH), C-reactive protein (CRP), progesterone (P4), and the complete blood count (CBC) in pregnant and non-pregnant bitches were measured to investigate their suitability for monitoring canine pregnancy. The results showed that the measurement of AMH and CRP concentrations could contribute to determining the stage of gestation and monitoring the course of pregnancy in dogs. These values were related to maternal body weight and the number of puppies. Sonography, the increase in CRP, and complete blood count values may be beneficial for monitoring canine pregnancy. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Effects of Chitosan on Cisplatin-Induced Hepatorenal Toxicity in an Animal Model

Asli Aykac, Huseyin Sah, Aysel Kukner, Serkan Sayiner, Ahmet Ozer Sehirli

Summary: In this study, the researchers investigated the effects of chitosan on reducing cisplatin-induced hepatorenal toxicity in rats. They found that chitosan treatment reversed the damage caused by cisplatin in the liver and kidneys, and also reduced apoptotic parameters, such as the Bcl-2/Bax ratio and caspase-3 expression. These findings suggest that chitosan, as a biopolymer, may have a protective effect in preventing hepatorenal damage caused by cisplatin.
