Are there life-history constraints on restoration of the endangered limpet Patella ferruginea (Mollusca, Gastropoda) in the northern Mediterranean Sea?

Maria Paola Ferranti, Javier Guallart, Virginia Cortella, Giacomo Terenziani, Mariachiara Chiantore

Summary: The ability of target species to adapt to environmental conditions and changes in human pressures may hinder the effectiveness of restoration measures. Evidence shows successful reproductive cycles of the endangered ferruginous limpet in the northernmost sector of the western Mediterranean, supporting the reintroduction and protection of the species in this area as an effective strategy.

Addressing reproductive stochasticity and grazing impacts in the restoration of a canopy-forming brown alga by implementing mitigation solutions

Gilda Savonitto, Gina de la Fuente, Enrico Tordoni, Saul Ciriaco, Marina Srijemsi, Giovanni Bacaro, Mariachiara Chiantore, Annalisa Falace

Summary: This study conducted the first ex situ restoration of a Mediterranean subtidal habitat-forming species of brown seaweed in a marine protected area in the Adriatic Sea. It evaluated the impact of a thermal anomaly, seasonality, and grazing pressure on the restoration process, highlighting the need for effective outplanting methods and fish control strategies to enhance the restoration of canopy-forming macroalgae.

Advancements towards restoration of the endangered limpet Patella ferruginea Gmelin, 1791 through controlled reproduction

Maria Paola Ferranti, Javier Guallart, Giorgio Fanciulli, Pier Augusto Panzalis, Mariachiara Chiantore

Summary: This study describes for the first time the successful spawning induction in P. ferruginea and the larval development of the species. The fertilization rate in these events was high, and settlement ability was reached at 3-4 days after fertilization, but metamorphosis occurred between 7 and 32 days with considerable variability.

Accounting for environmental stress in restoration of intertidal foundation species

Rachel. J. J. Clausing, Gina De La Fuente, Annalisa Falace, Mariachiara Chiantore

Summary: Restoring foundation species in historical habitats can be challenging, especially if adult facilitation is crucial for the survival of early life stages. Exposure to transient, low environmental stress and outplanting clumped individuals may enhance resilience and facilitate successful establishment of early life stages in zones of reduced abiotic stress.

Observations on some reproductive features of the threatened limpet Patella ferruginea Gmelin, 1791 in north-western Mediterranean Italian waters

Javier Guallart, Maria Paola Ferranti, Mariachiara Chiantore

Summary: This study provides information on the reproductive biology of the threatened limpet Patella ferruginea. The population parameters of the species in the northernmost extreme of its distribution were found to be similar to those in the Alboran Sea. Several sex changes were observed in the specimens, indicating the complexity of the reproductive mode of P. ferruginea. The regular gonadal maturation in the area supports the potential viability of the species, providing important information for conservation actions.

Effect of temperature and duration of immersion on the stability of prepared feeds in echinoculture

Marco Secci, Maria Paola Ferranti, Angelica Giglioli, Viviana Pasquini, Doriana Sicurelli, Giovanni Fanelli, Ermelinda Prato

Summary: Temperature and duration of immersion significantly affected the stability of echinoculture feeds, with Feed 1 being the most stable and Feed 3 being the least stable. Feeding regime should be adjusted based on temperature to optimize echinoculture practice.
