Summary: In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the molecular engineering of coordination metal complexes for their applications in nonlinear optics (NLO) in areas such as optoelectronics and optical data storage technology. The control over the optical nonlinearity is induced by the combination of transition metals and organic moieties, which not only enhance the intensity but also significantly affect the polarization of incident laser light. Coordination metal complexes are ideal targets for research due to their robustness, physical and chemical stability, and tunability of NLO responses. This review focuses specifically on small mononuclear metal complexes for NLO applications.
