Polymeric micelles serve as an effective approach in pulmonary drug delivery, enhancing drug targeting to the lung, reducing side effects, and improving drug efficacy. Their importance lies in rational design and ideal properties for pulmonary route delivery.
Respiratory diseases have remained one of the most common diseases worldwide, in which oral and intravenous administration are the most common treatment routes. However, these administrative routes face various difficulties in reaching local pulmonary targets, possessing low efficacy, and have high risk of systemic side effects. To solve these issues, polymeric micelles represent an effective approach. These nano-ranged delivery systems can encapsulate and protect poorly water-soluble drugs, enhance drug targeting to the lung, reduce side effects, and improve drug efficacy via inhalation route. In this review, the importance of rational design was highlighted by summarizing the recent progress on the development of polymeric micelles in pulmonary delivery. Emphasis is also placed on the different types and preparations, as well as ideal properties and advantages of polymeric micelles for pulmonary route. Graphic abstract

Calcium phosphate incorporated in silk fibroin/methylcellulose based injectable hydrogel: Preparation, characterization, and in vitro biological evaluation for bone defect treatment

Premchirakorn Phewchan, Artit Laoruengthana, Waree Tiyaboonchai

Summary: Bone defect remains a challenging issue in orthopedic practice, and there is growing interest in injectable bone substitutes that can fill different bone defect geometries and improve the biological environment for bone regeneration. Silk fibroin (SF) is a notable polymer due to its biocompatible and biodegradable properties. In this study, composite injectable hydrogels incorporating calcium phosphate particles (CAPs) in SF and methylcellulose (MC) were developed and compared to assess their physicochemical properties.

Preparations and characterizations of effervescent granules containing azithromycin solid dispersion for children and elder: Solubility enhancement, taste-masking, and digestive acidic protection

Duyen Thi My Huynh, Huynh Thien Hai, Nguyen Minh Hau, Huynh Kim Lan, Truong Phu Vinh, Van De Tran, Duy Toan Pham

Summary: By preparing and characterizing effervescent granules containing azithromycin solid dispersion, we successfully addressed the issues of swallowing difficulty, inefficient absorption, poor solubility, bitter taste, and instability of azithromycin in the stomach acidic condition in children and elder population. The optimized solid dispersion greatly enhanced the solubility of azithromycin, improved its taste, formed intermolecular bonding, and transformed the drug molecules from crystalline to amorphous state. The final effervescent granules formulation met all the requirements stated in the Vietnamese Pharmacopoeia and can be further investigated as a potential azithromycin delivery system with high bioavailability for children and elder population.

Onto the differences in formulating micro-/nanoparticulate drug delivery system from Thai silk and Vietnamese silk: A critical comparison

Ngoc Yen Nguyen, Thi Ngoc Phuong Nguyen, Nguyen Ngoc Huyen, Van De Tran, Tran Thi Bich Quyen, Huynh Vu Thanh Luong, Duy Toan Pham

Summary: This study compared the characteristics and capacity to generate micro-/nanoparticles of fibroin extracted from Thai silk and Vietnamese silk. The structure of Thai fibroin revealed less heavy chains, more light chains and P-25 glycoproteins, and lower crystallinity than those of Vietnamese fibroin. The particles formed by Vietnamese fibroin were significantly bigger, had lower drug entrapment efficiency, higher hemotoxicity, and less biostability in the blood compared to the particles formed by Thai fibroin.

Van De Tran, Ba Kien Tran, Duyen Thi My Huynh, Thanh Yen Nguyen, Thi My Thao Nguyen, Thi My Tien Pham, Quang Loc Duyen Vo, Valeria Valeryevna Dorofeeva, Rebecca Susan Dewey, Duy Toan Pham

Summary: This study investigated the motivations and barriers to pharmacists implementing telepharmacy in the Mekong Delta region, Vietnam. Results showed that having a pharmacy degree and a higher income were positively associated with telepharmacy use. The main motivation was providing healthcare services to remote areas, while the main barrier was the lack of policies and regulations. A majority of pharmacists without telepharmacy experience expressed a desire to use it in the future. The Vietnamese government needs to issue detailed regulations to support the advancement of telepharmacy in the country.
