This paper evaluates the evolution of environmental performance in the context of the European Union (EU), over the period 1993-2010. The context is particularly relevant, due to the traditionally high concerns of the EU about these issues, which has triggered off several initiatives and regulations on environmental protection. In this setting, we conduct a two-stage analysis which develops environmental performance indicators in the first stage for each pair country-year, and evaluates its evolution in the second. More specifically, in the first stage we estimate specific efficiencies for three air-pollutants (CO(2)e, SO2, NOx), along with an eco-efficiency indicator, for which we use the slack-free directional distance functions in the Data Envelopment Analysis framework (as opposed to the more extended intensity ratios), whereas in the second stage we propose to using a model of explicit distribution dynamics which takes into account how the entire distributions of these indicators evolve. Our results indicate that the dynamics underlying the evolution of the indicators analyzed are indeed remarkable. Although the eco-efficiency indicator has improved over the last two decades, it has-been during the last decade when performance has shown a more convergent path. However, in the case of the more traditional indicators (CO(2)e, SO2, NOx) the abatement opportunities are still remarkable, especially in the case of SO2. (c) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Modeling the Spatial Distribution of Xylella fastidiosa: A Nonstationary Approach with Dispersal Barriers

Martina Cendoya, Ana Hubel, David Conesa, Antonio Vicent

Summary: Spatial species distribution models often assume isotropy and stationarity, but such assumptions are violated when dispersal barriers are present. This study evaluated the influence of barriers on the distribution of Xylella fastidiosa in Alicante, Spain. The results showed that barriers reduced the probability of X. fastidiosa presence outside the barrier, and gaps in the barrier increased the probability in areas with low sampling intensity. These findings are important for prioritizing surveillance and disease control efforts.

Does university performance have an economic payoff for home regions? Evidence for the Spanish provinces

Joan Crespo, Jesus Peiro-Palomino, Emili Tortosa-Ausina

Summary: The study found a positive relationship between university system performance and labor productivity growth, driven mainly by shifts in the frontier, but the impact was not significant for provinces with productivity levels below the median, suggesting that the relative underperformance of the Spanish university system could be one of the factors hindering the convergence path of provinces.

Summary: Marine protected areas (MPAs) are promising for the conservation and recovery of marine ecosystems and fishery management, but the dynamic nature of marine systems has led to debates on more dynamic designs. This study proposes a method to assess the spatiotemporal dynamics of fishery management priority areas, emphasizing the importance of regularly reassessing MPA designs.

A mesoscale analysis of relations between fish species richness and environmental and anthropogenic pressures in the Mediterranean Sea

Joao Carmezim, Maria Grazia Pennino, Joaquin Martinez-Minaya, David Conesa, Marta Coll

Summary: The study assesses the interaction between different fish species richness and anthropogenic threats in the Mediterranean Sea. It found that areas with higher fish richness are mainly located along the western and northern shores, with lower values in the southeastern regions. The results suggest that higher salinity, lower chlorophyll-a and phosphate concentrations in colder areas are more favorable for fish richness.

Constructing a financial inclusion index for Mexican municipalities

Maria del Carmen Dircio-Palacios-Macedo, Paula Cruz-Garcia, Fausto Hernandez-Trillo, Emili Tortosa-Ausina

Summary: Access to financial services varies greatly worldwide, both among countries and within regions and municipalities of the same country. To address this variation, we propose a novel Financial Inclusion (FI) index that incorporates different subdimensions of access and usage. Our index is formulated using exploratory factor analysis and aggregated as a weighted geometric mean. By applying this index to Mexican municipalities in 2020, we find that each municipality has different levels of importance for each dimension, indicating potential reasons for low levels of FI.

The 2030 power sector transition in Spain: Too little storage for so many planned solar photovoltaics?

Roberto Gomez-Calvet, Jose M. Martinez-Duart, Ana Rosa Gomez-Calvet

Summary: This work discusses the power transition in Spain by 2030 to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. The Spanish government has set specific objectives for the electricity power mix evolution from 2020 to 2050, including a significant increase in photovoltaic (PV) capacity. However, the plan fails to adequately address the storage and backup power requirements for PV expansion, potentially leading to curtailment of solar energy.
