Using a panel cointegration model developed based on the data extracted from the World Bank indicators, this study quantified the relationship between carbon emissions, energy consumption, economic growth, and trade openness in sub-Saharan African countries. It discovered from our analysis that there exists a long-run causality association amongst CO2 emissions, energy consumption, economic growth, and trade openness. The study noted the existence of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) in the panel using the square term for trade openness; it was found to have a negative impact, thus trade in the long run will somewhat decrease the environmental pollution in this region. The study results imply that there should be stringent policies and rigorous enforcement in sub-Saharan African to ensure sustainable growth without associative environmental issues.

Is income inequality a stumbling block to the global natural gas market?

Jun Zhao, Kangyin Dong, Farhad Taghizadeh-Hesary

Summary: The main research topic of this paper is to examine the nonlinear impact of common prosperity on natural gas use in the global dimension. The study finds an inverted U-shaped relationship between income inequality and global gas use, suggesting that as the income gap widens, global gas use expands, but gradually decreases when the income gap peaks. Moreover, the study reveals asymmetric impacts of income inequality on global gas use under different natural gas conditions, and proposes policy suggestions to narrow the income gap, rationalize income distribution, and formulate strategies according to local conditions.

Water-energy-food security under green finance constraints in Southwest China

Shibao Lu, Wenjing Lu, Meng Xu, Farhad Taghizadeh-Hesary, Yao Tang

Summary: This study uses quantitative analysis to calculate the water footprint of water-intensive food energy production and virtual water flow caused by trade in five provinces of southwest China based on green financial data. It proposes a modified water resource stress index (MWSI) associated with virtual water outflow. The results show that food energy output and virtual water flow in southwest China are increasing, leading to pressure on water resources in the locality and output region. Green finance could be a solution to address water insecurity in China. This paper proposes comprehensive policy suggestions to ensure the sustainable development of water resources in southwest China.

Summary: This paper measures the level of environmental efficiency (EE) in 72 countries between 2001 and 2019 using the Global Malmquist-Luenberger productivity index. The study examines the role of hydrogen development in increasing EE, considering asymmetric effects, moderating effects, and mediating effects. The results show that hydrogen development significantly increases EE, with a stronger impact in countries with higher EE levels. Foreign direct investment plays a key moderating role, and technological progress acts as an effective mediator between hydrogen development and EE. The findings provide policy implications for accelerating hydrogen development and improving EE.

The role of carbon pricing in achieving energy transition in the Post-COP26 era: Evidence from China's industrial energy conservation

Xiujie Tan, Banban Wang, Jie Wei, Farhad Taghizadeh-Hesary

Summary: Carbon pricing is essential for achieving COP26 targets and carbon neutrality by promoting energy transition. However, empirical evidence on the role of carbon pricing in energy transition is limited. This study estimates the price elasticity of energy consumption using energy prices as proxies for carbon prices and finds that carbon pricing can significantly reduce energy consumption, especially in high-energy-consuming sectors such as ferrous metals, petroleum processing, chemicals, non-metal products, power, and heat. By adopting China's Emissions Trading Scheme, the covered sectors can achieve substantial energy consumption reductions with different carbon prices, contributing significantly to coal phase-down and energy transition in the post-COP26 era.
