Primary production (PP) is a key variable to evaluate the quality of the ecological services provided by freshwater bodies because it gives information on the amount of oxygen and organic matter incorporated into the system. We analysed the impact of a mixture of commercial formulations of glyphosate- and 2,4-D-based herbicides (Roundup Max (R) and AsiMax 50 (R), respectively) on freshwater primary production. Primary production was studied through the oxygen exchange method. Four measurements were made during a 23-day experiment in outdoor mesocosms using the light and dark bottle method. High and low concentrations of the active ingredients were assayed to evaluate a concentration-dependent effect. Our results indicated that the mixture of Roundup Max (R) and AsiMax 50 (R) acted mostly additively on gross and net primary production. Moreover, we found a concentration-dependent effect of each herbicide on PP. Thus, AsiMax 50 (R) at low and Roundup Max (R) at high concentration induced a significant early decrease in respiration and gross primary production 4 h after application, attributable to physiological responses. Besides, significant increases in primary production were simultaneously recorded with increases in chlorophyll a concentration and micro + nano-phytoplankton abundance 7 days after the application of Roundup Max (R) at high concentration. This study contributes to the knowledge of the impact of widely used herbicides on freshwater ecosystems.

Divergent dynamics of microbial components in two temperate shallow lakes with contrasting steady states in the Southern Hemisphere

Summary: Factors that affect abundances of organisms in water bodies are influenced by internal and external drivers. In the shallow lakes of the Pampa region, clear lakes are better suited to serve as sentinels of climate change compared to turbid lakes, as they are more sensitive to both internal and external factors.

An invasive mussel is in trouble: How do glyphosate, 2,4-D and its mixture affect Limnoperna fortuneiMODIFIER LETTER PRIMEs survival?

Cecilia E. Miranda, Carlos D. Clauser, Veronica L. Lozano, Daniel H. Cataldo, Haydee N. Pizarro

Summary: The study found that glyphosate and its mixture had direct and indirect effects on the survival of L. fortunei. In experiments with air supply, the accumulated mortality rates were 20.0% for glyphosate and 10.0% for the mixture. In experiments without air supply, L. fortunei intensified the changes in DO fluctuation patterns driven by the herbicides, leading to system hypoxia.

First evaluation of the periphyton recovery after glyphosate exposure

Maria Solange Vera, Maria Alcira Trinelli

Summary: The study evaluated the recovery potential of freshwater periphyton from glyphosate exposure and found that the exposure concentration modulates the recovery process. It is the first to investigate the recovery of periphyton exposed to the most commonly used herbicide in the world in herbicide-free water, highlighting the need for more research on the recovery potential of freshwater ecosystems and aquatic communities after glyphosate contamination.

Rethinking the term glyphosate effect through the evaluation of different glyphosate-based herbicide effects over aquatic microbial communities☆

Summary: Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH) encompass a variety of glyphosate salts and adjuvants, which have diverse impacts on aquatic microbial communities beyond the effects of the active ingredient alone. Different GBH showed significantly different effects on microbial community structures, affecting bacterioplankton abundance and specific picocyanobacteria populations. These findings highlight the need to consider the broader effects of GBH formulations on natural aquatic ecosystems beyond simply attributing impacts to glyphosate alone.

Hidden impacts of environmental stressors on freshwater communities could be revealed at lower concentrations by correlation of abundances network analyses: An example with herbicides glyphosate, 2,4-D, and their mixtures

Veronica Laura Lozano

Summary: This study discusses the possibility of using correlation networks to uncover the hidden effects of environmental stressors on community interactions in ecotoxicological studies. A re-analysis of published data reveals that correlation networks can detect impacts on community interactions at lower herbicide concentrations than those that significantly alter abundances. The proposed approach, called correlation of abundances network analysis (CANA), offers a new method for studying freshwater communities in ecotoxicology.

Summary: While agricultural intensification is associated with lake eutrophication, the role of macrophytes and the effects of agriculture on shallow lakes in the global south remain less understood. A study on the Pampean region of Argentina found that submerged macrophytes, total nitrogen, and nearby agriculture were the main drivers of phytoplankton biomass in the shallow lakes. The conservation of submerged macrophytes and control of agriculture in riparian areas can help stabilize the shallow lakes and maintain a clear regime even in eutrophic conditions.

Structural parameters of biofilm and bacterioplankton are better indicators of urbanization than photosynthetic functional parameters in low-order streams

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of urbanization on microbial communities in low-order streams. Results showed higher bacterial biofilm biomass and nutrient concentration in urbanized areas. Correlations were found between bacterial biofilm density and humic acid concentration, as well as between bacterioplankton density and soluble reactive phosphorus and nitrite concentration. The bacterial morphotypes Small rod, Large rod, and Vibrio shaped (large) could differentiate urban areas and serve as indicators of urbanization effects.

Short-Term Meteorological Conditions Explain Cyanobacterial Blooms in a Tropical Reservoir

Florencia Soledad Alvarez Dalinger, Veronica Laura Lozano, Claudia Nidia Borja, Liliana Beatriz Morana, Salusso Maria Monica

Summary: This study analyzed the abiotic factors promoting cyanobacterial blooms in the El Limon reservoir during warm seasons and explored the physical and chemical parameters affecting the morphology of the most abundant cyanobacteria species. The results showed that short-term meteorological variations correlated with cyanobacterial abundances in this reservoir. Average daily temperatures and accumulated precipitation were found to influence the abundances and growth of cyanobacteria. Continuous and periodic monitoring is therefore necessary for tropical reservoirs.

Summary: Global change drivers are affecting freshwater ecosystems in South America, with rising human pressures on natural resources and lack of environmental protection measures. The main threats include climate change, watershed stressors, hydrological alteration, channel modification, and biological stressors, especially related to land uses such as mining, agriculture, and urban expansion. Empowering public organizations for environmental protection, developing regulatory frameworks, providing funding for environmental legislation, and implementing ecological rehabilitation are needed to reduce threats and promote sustainable development in the region.
