Telomere length mirrors age structure along a 2200-m altitudinal gradient in a Mediterranean lizard

The timing of organisms' senescence is developmentally programmed but also shaped by the interaction between environmental inputs and life-history traits. In ectotherms, ageing dynamics are still poorly understood even though their body temperature, metabolism, or growth trajectory are very sensitive to environmental changes. Here, we investigated the role of life-history traits such as age, sex, body size, body condition, and tail autotomy (i.e self-amputation) in shaping telomere length in six populations of the Algerian sand lizard (Psammodromus algirus) distributed along an elevational gradient from 300 to 2500 m above the sea level. Additionally, we compiled the available information on reptiles' telomere length in a review table. Our cross-sectional study shows that older lizards have longer telomeres, which might be mostly linked to the selective disappearance of individuals with shorter telomeres or, alternatively, mediated by a higher expression of telomerase across their life. In fact, variation in telomere length across elevation was explained by age structure of lizards; thus, in contrast to our predictions, altitude had no effect on telomere length in this study system. Telomere length was unaffected by tail regeneration and was sex-independent, but positively correlated with body condition, which might be linked to high somatic investment. Hence, our results suggest that life-history traits such as age or body condition can be major drivers of telomere dynamics for this species, whereas environmental conditions apparently had scarce or no effects on lizard telomeres. Our findings emphasize the relevance of understanding species' life histories for fully disentangling the causes and consequences of differences in ageing in ectotherms.

Predation pressure and life stage influence the integration and tuning of antipredator defenses in prey.

Morphological Correlates of Locomotion in the Aquatic and the Terrestrial Phases of Pleurodeles waltl Newts from Southwestern Iberia

Summary: This article examines the relationship between morphological traits and locomotor performance in male and female semiaquatic Pleurodeles waltl newts in their aquatic and terrestrial stages. Ageing across the great divide: tissue transformation, organismal growth and temperature shape telomere dynamics through the metamorphic transition

Summary: The study investigated the telomere dynamics during the development of Xenopus laevis and found that telomere dynamics were associated with tissue transformation. The length of telomeres in gut tissue significantly increased during metamorphosis, while telomeres in liver and hindlimb muscle gradually shortened until adulthood. Telomeres in tail muscle remained constant until tail resorption, and those in the heart showed no change over time. The length of telomeres was negatively correlated with larval growth and shorter in cooler conditions, indicating a higher cost of growth in the cold. Ammonium effects on oxidative stress, telomere length, and locomotion across life stages of an anuran from habitats with contrasting land-use histories

Summary: Understanding how wildlife responds to global changes, particularly anthropic pollution, is important for eco-evolutionary research. In this study, we found that green frog larvae from agricultural systems had a better redox status but shorter telomeres than those from natural habitats. After metamorphosis, individuals from natural habitats had better redox status in response to ammonium exposure, and differences in telomere length between habitats disappeared. Additionally, frogs with lower glutathione reductase activity and longer telomeres had better jumping performance. This study highlights the importance of land-use history in shaping physiological pathways linked to individual health and lifespan across different life stages.

Links between reproduction and immunity in two sympatric wild marine fishes

Summary: According to life-history theory, there might be different immunological strategies between reproductive and non-reproductive periods due to limited resources. Our study on two sympatric marine fish species, rockfish and sandperch, found that reproductive individuals showed lower immune function, but higher levels of natural antibodies in rockfish females, compared to their non-reproductive counterparts. On the other hand, reproductively active sandperch males showed lower levels of natural antibodies and higher neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and spleen index compared to non-reproductive males. The study highlights the species-specific patterns of immunity and the potential influence of resource limitation and abiotic factors on immune trade-offs in fish.
