As the world looks towards the stars, the impacts of endogenous and exogenous microorganisms on human health during long-duration space flight are subjects of increased interest within the space community. The presence and continued growth of bacterial biofilms about spacecraft has been documented for decades; however, the impact on crew health is in its infancy. The impacts of biofilms are well known in the medical, agricultural, commercial, and industrial spaces. It less known that biofilms are undermining many facets of space travel and that their effects need to be understood and addressed for future space missions. Biofilms can damage space crew health and spoil limited food supply. Yet, at the same time, they can benefit plant systems for food growth, nutrient development, and other biological systems that are being explored for use in space travel. Various biofilm removal techniques have been studied to mitigate the hazards posed by biofilm persistence during space travel. Because the presence of biofilms can advance or hinder humanity's space exploration efforts, an understanding of their impacts over the duration of space flights is of paramount importance.

Pelvic osteotomy in cloacal exstrophy: A changing perspective

Nora M. Haney, Chad B. Crigger, Tamir Sholklapper, Shwetha Mudalegundi, Angelica Griggs-Demmin, Isam W. Nasr, Paul Sponseller, John P. Gearhart

Summary: This study assessed the impact of different osteotomy and pelvic fixation methods on the outcomes of primary closure surgery for cloacal exstrophy. It was found that multi-stage procedures were more common and had higher success rates than single-stage procedures, and any osteotomy was associated with successful closure. The fixation methods also changed, with an increase in Buck's traction and external fixation and a decrease in spica casting. A multidisciplinary approach with a combination osteotomy was found to improve surgical outcomes.

Oral Dysbiosis and Neurodegenerative Diseases: Correlations and Potential Causations

Justine S. Nicholson, Kyle S. Landry

Summary: Bacterial biofilms, which adhere to various surfaces, have been found to impact oral and intestinal health as well as neurodegenerative diseases. This review article provides insight into the role of bacterial biofilms in the development and progression of neurodegenerative diseases, shedding light on an important area of research.

Cell Cycle Progression Score, but Not Phosphatase and Tensin Homolog Loss, Is an Independent Prognostic Factor for Metastasis in Intermediate- and High-risk Prostate Cancer in Men Treated With and Without Salvage Radiotherapy

Summary: The study showed that cell-cycle progression was independently associated with metastasis-free survival in prostate cancer patients, particularly those receiving salvage radiotherapy, while phosphatase and tensin homolog had weaker correlation with metastasis after adjustment for post-surgical risk assessment.

Noninvasive assessment of renal dynamics and pH in a unilateral ureter obstruction model using DCE MR-CEST urography

Julia Stabinska, Aruna Singh, Nora M. Haney, Yuguo Li, Farzad Sedaghat, Max Kates, Michael T. McMahon

Summary: This study investigates the potential of DCE MR CEST urography for assessing renal function in mice with unilateral ureter obstruction (UUO) by simultaneous pH and renal uptake/clearance measurements. The results show that DCE-MR-CEST urography can detect changes in renal uptake/excretion and pH homeostasis and distinguish between obstructed and unobstructed kidney as early as 1 day after UUO.

Application of Tunica Vaginalis Flap for Epispadias Repair in the Epispadias-Exstrophy Complex

Summary: This study reviewed the long-term outcomes and experience of using the tunica vaginalis flap (TVF) for complex epispadias repair. The study found that in patients who underwent TVF, 7 developed urethrocutaneous fistulae, 1 had dehiscence, and 1 had both. The results suggest that the use of the tunica vaginalis as an adjunct to epispadias repair can effectively prevent the development of urethrocutaneous fistulae.

Orthopedic complications after osteotomy in patients with classic bladder exstrophy and cloacal exstrophy: a comparative study

Tamir N. Sholklapper, Chad Crigger, Nora Haney, Preeya Khandge, Wayland Wu, Paul D. Sponseller, John P. Gearhart

Summary: Despite similar rates of closure success and overall complications, patients with CE are more prone to superficial pin-site infections after pelvic osteotomy. External hip fixation may contribute to increased orthopedic complications, but further research is needed to understand the underlying causes of these complications.

The use of a modified tanagho flap in the repair of posterior urethral stricture after primary exstrophy closure

Hannah Guan, Tamir Sholklapper, Chad Crigger, Nora Haney, Thomas G. W. Harris, John P. Gearhart

Summary: This study describes a bladder neck reconstruction (BNR) with a modified Tanagho anterior detrusor flap for the treatment of posterior urethral stricture after repair of classic bladder exstrophy. Five patients underwent proximal urethral reconstruction with modified Tanagho flap, and four male patients with classic bladder exstrophy were successfully treated for posterior urethral strictures. The technique showed excellent long-term success rates with no recurrence of stricture.

Summary: This study compares the orthopedic complications between staged and non-staged pelvic osteotomies in the closure of extreme pubic diastasis of cloacal exstrophy. The results show that staged pelvic osteotomy is a safe alternative to non-staged osteotomy and can decrease the risk of closure failure in this group.
