The selection of varieties or species of plants with higher nutrient uptake efficiency and nutrient concentration for biofortification of food crops is a key tool to reduce malnutrition. Soybean (Glycine max L. Merr) is one of the most important food crops, because it is consumed directly or indirectly, in the form of seeds, processed (milk and/or derivatives), or used as a protein component of animal feed worldwide. In order to select plants with higher nutrients concentration in seeds, 24 soybean varieties for tropical and subtropical conditions and different general features were assessed. There was great variability in photosynthesis rate, chlorophyll content, seed yield (SY), and concentration and uptake of nutrients by seeds between the varieties. Not genetically modified (NGM) crops showed higher nitrogen (N), cooper (Cu), and manganese (Mn) concentration and higher N, potassium (K), Cu, iron (Fe), Mn, and zinc (Zn) uptake, while for genetically modified (GM) crops only calcium (Ca) concentrations were higher. Varieties BRS 284 and BMX Magna RR showed the highest nutrients concentrations in the group with the highest nutrient efficiency. The genetic variability observed among the varieties regarding uptake and translocation of nutrients into seeds allows selecting more promising materials to be used in the biofortification of nutrients in soybean seeds.

Long-term liming improves soil fertility and soybean root growth, reflecting improvements in leaf gas exchange and grain yield

Joao William Bossolani, Carlos Alexandre Costa Crusciol, Jose Roberto Portugal, Luiz Gustavo Moretti, Ariani Garcia, Vitor Alves Rodrigues, Mariley de Cassia da Fonseca, Leila Bernart, Rafael Goncalves Vilela, Leticia Pastore Mendonca, Andre Rodrigues dos Reis

Summary: Soil acidity is a major factor affecting crop productivity, especially in combination with dry spells. Surface liming can alleviate soil acidity, improve root growth, enhance photosynthetic activity, and increase crop yield. Increasing lime rates up to 2 times the recommended rate boosts soil fertility, root growth, and soybean photosynthetic metabolism, leading to improved growth and yield even under dry spell conditions.

Letusa Momesso, Carlos A. C. Crusciol, Rogerio P. Soratto, Carlos A. C. Nascimento, Ciro A. Rosolem, Luiz G. Moretti, Eiko E. Kuramae, Heitor Cantarella

Summary: The study found that in tropical no-tillage systems, nitrogen fertilizer can be applied at specific times on cover crops or their residues as an alternative to traditional side-dressing for maize, improving biomass decomposition and nitrogen release rates. However, different cover crop species have varied responses to nitrogen application.

Improving soil fertility with lime and phosphogypsum enhances soybean yield and physiological characteristics

Joao William Bossolani, Carlos Alexandre Costa Crusciol, Luiz Gustavo Moretti, Ariani Garcia, Jose Roberto Portugal, Leila Bernart, Rafael Goncalves Vilela, Eduardo Favero Caires, Telmo Jorge Carneiro Amado, Juliano Carlos Calonego, Andre Rodrigues dos Reis

Summary: The study found that applying lime combined with phosphogypsum in tropical no-till systems can improve soil fertility, enhance soybean root growth, and increase plant nutrition and physiological responses, resulting in improved crop resistance to dry spells. These long-term soil amendments also increased the movement of cationic bases and roots in the soil profile, improving soybean nutrition. Moreover, the application of lime and phosphogypsum enhanced carbon and antioxidant metabolism in soybean plants, leading to higher grain yield despite the occurrence of dry spells in the tropical region.

Organic yellow passion fruit productivity due to irrigation, semi protected cultivation and artificial pollination

Nilcileia Mendes da Silva, Sebastiao Elviro de Araujo Neto, Luis Gustavo de Souza e Souza, Thays Lemos Uchoa, Wagner de Moura Francisco, Regina Lucia Felix Ferreira

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of irrigation, semi-protected cultivation, and artificial pollination on the yield and quality of organic yellow passion fruit. The results showed that artificial pollination significantly increased the fruit yield, while irrigation and semi-protected cultivation did not affect the yield or number of fruits per plant. There was a positive linear relationship between the number of fruits and the yield. Regardless of irrigation, using a combination of semi-protected cultivation, rainfed conditions, and artificial pollination or direct sunlight and natural pollination resulted in higher mean fruit mass.
