Pediatric myopia has become a major international public health concern. The prevalence of myopia has undergone a significant increase worldwide. The purpose of this review of the current literature was to evaluate the peer-reviewed scientific literature on the efficacy and safety of low-dose atropine treatment combined with overnight orthokeratology for myopia control. A search was conducted in Pubmed and Web of Science with the following search strategy: (atropine OR low-dose atropine OR 0.01% atropine) AND (orthokeratology OR ortho-k) AND (myopia control OR myopia progression). All included studies improved myopia control by the synergistic effect of orthokeratology with low-dose atropine, compared with orthokeratology treatment alone. All studies included a short or medium follow-up period; therefore longer-term studies are necessary to validate these results.

Intense Pulse Light Combined With Low-Level Light Therapy in Dry Eye Disease: A Systematic Review

Antonio Ballesteros-Sanchez, Beatriz Gargallo-Martinez, Maria Carmen Sanchez-Gonzalez, Jose-Maria Sanchez-Gonzalez

Summary: The combination of intense pulse light (IPL) and low-level light therapy (LLLT) shows improvement in symptoms and signs of dry eye disease (DED). Results from relevant studies indicate that this treatment decreases the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) score, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) score, MGD grade, and meiboscore, while increasing tear film stability, lipid layer thickness, and loss area of the meibomian gland. However, the effects on tear volume, tear meniscus height, and Schirmer test are inconclusive.

Alfredo Lopez-Munoz, Beatriz Gargallo-Martinez, Maria Carmen Sanchez-Gonzalez, Raul Capote-Puente, Concepcion De-Hita-Cantalejo, Marta Romero-Luna, Juan-Jose Conejero-Dominguez, Jose-Maria Sanchez-Gonzalez

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between myopia and ocular biometric variables. The Pentacam AXL((R)) single rotation Scheimpflug camera was used for this study. The results showed that axial length (AXL) had a significant correlation with spherical equivalent without cycloplegia (SE), age at onset of myopia, mean keratometry (Km), anterior chamber depth (ACD), and corneal horizontal diameter (WTW). AXL was found to have the greatest influence on the final refractive state in adult myopic eyes.

Summary: Presbyopia is a condition where the eye's ability to focus on near objects decreases, leading to difficulty in sustaining clear vision. It is estimated that by 2030, around 2.1 billion people will be affected by presbyopia. Corneal inlays are a potential solution for correcting presbyopia, involving the implantation of a small device beneath the cornea. However, postoperative complications such as corneal fibrosis, epithelial iron deposits, and stromal haze have been reported.

Antonio Ballesteros-Sanchez, Beatriz Gargallo-Martinez, Ramon Gutierrez-Ortega, Jose-Maria Sanchez-Gonzalez

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the intraobserver repeatability of automated, objective, and noninvasive measurements obtained with the S390L Firefly WDR slitlamp. Multiple variables were measured in 50 eyes of dry eye disease patients. The results showed that all variables except L-MGD grade had no statistically significant differences in repeated-measures analysis. F-NIBUT and A-NIBUT had the poorest repeatability, while the remaining variables showed satisfactory repeatability.

The role of matrix metalloproteinases in infectious corneal ulcers

Celia Garcia-Lopez, Marina Rodriguez-Calvo-de-Mora, Davide Borroni, Jose-Maria Sanchez-Gonzalez, Vito Romano, Carlos Rocha-de-Lossada

Summary: During infectious keratitis, the overexpression of MMPs, particularly MMP-2 and MMP-9, leads to the degradation of corneal collagen and can cause complications. Nonspecific treatments like tetracyclines and corticosteroids are used as adjuvants to antimicrobials to alleviate corneal degradation and inflammation. Specific MMP inhibitors, pro-MMP activator inhibitors, and anti-cytokine agents have also been reported. Further studies are needed to investigate the potential of these treatments in managing infectious keratitis.

Surveying a Sample of the Spanish Ophthalmologic Community about Vaccination against Herpes Zoster

Alberto Sanchez-Mellado, Luis Alcaraz-Clemente, Marina Rodriguez-Calvo-de-Mora, Jose-Maria Sanchez-Gonzalez, Santiago Ortiz-Perez, Carlos Rocha-de-Lossada

Summary: There are two authorized vaccines for herpes zoster (HZ), Zostavax and Shingrix, which have proven to be safe and effective. Ophthalmologists play an important role in advocating for vaccination against HZ due to their work with vision-threatening complications. A survey was conducted among Spanish ophthalmologists to assess their knowledge of the available vaccines and it revealed lack of awareness and low rates of vaccination recommendation. It is crucial for ophthalmologists to take an active role in HZ prevention due to the consequences of the disease and the availability of effective vaccines.
