Summary: This retrospective observational study evaluated the factors influencing the start date of the influenza epidemic season and the total number of infected persons per 1,000,000 population in 47 prefectures of Japan. Using a Japanese health insurance claims database, single and multiple regression analyses were conducted to assess the relationship between the start time of the epidemic and various factors such as absolute humidity, total visitors, and total population. The study found that the earlier the climate became suitable for virus transmission and the higher the human mobility, the earlier the epidemic season tended to begin.

Summary: Pregnant individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 are at high risk of complications, but little is known about the immune response and antibody transfer from COVID-19 vaccines in different trimesters. This study characterizes the antibody response and transplacental transfer in pregnant individuals who received Ad26.COV2.S, mRNA-1273, or BNT162b2 vaccines. The findings show differences in vaccine-induced functions, receptor-binding, and efficacy against variants of concern. First and third trimester vaccination enhances maternal immune response and antibody transfer compared to the second trimester. These results provide valuable insights into the effect of vaccine platform and timing on maternal immune response and transplacental antibody transfer.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of nirsevimab using a weight-banded dosing regimen in infants born between 29 weeks gestational age and full term. The results showed that a single dose of nirsevimab protected healthy infants born at term or preterm from RSV lower respiratory tract infection, reducing the incidence of hospital admissions and severe cases associated with RSV. Therefore, nirsevimab has the potential to alleviate the burden of infant RSV disease.

Summary: In Brazil, the National Immunization Program includes PCV10 for children < 2 years old and PPV23 for high-risk patients >= 2 years and institutionalized >= 60 years. PCV13 is only used in private clinics. A retrospective study on IPD patients in 5 hospitals in Brazil revealed that high-risk comorbidities were more common than at-risk conditions. This study suggests the need for expanded valence vaccines to provide broad prevention of IPD.

Summary: Developing a timely and effective response to emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern is crucial for public health. Global health surveillance relies not only on genomic data but also on methods that utilize genomic data to estimate the epidemiological dynamics of emerging lineages. In this study, the differences in reporting delays among SARS-CoV-2 VOCs were analyzed, indicating that these delays may have delayed the global response to the Mu variant. The nonsystematic biases in the reporting of genomic data could impede the assessment of future emerging variants.

Summary: Hepatitis A is a vaccine-preventable infection caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). It leads to an acute inflammatory reaction in the liver, but usually resolves without chronic sequelae. Factors such as immunological status, age, pregnancy, and underlying hepatic diseases can affect the severity of the disease. Vaccination and natural immunity can provide long-term protection against re-infection. The WHO recommends vaccination for high-risk individuals in low endemicity countries and universal childhood vaccination in intermediate endemicity countries.
