In adolescents from low- and middle-income countries, bullying victimization was found to be associated with several obesogenic behaviours.
Background Data on the association between obesogenic behaviours and bullying victimization among adolescents are scarce from low- and middle-income countries. Objectives To assess the associations between obesogenic behaviours and bullying victimization in 54 low- and middle-income countries. Methods Cross-sectional data from the global school-based student health survey were analyzed. Data on bullying victimization and obesogenic behaviours were collected. The association between bullying victimization and the different types of obesogenic behaviour (anxiety-induced insomnia, fast-food consumption, carbonated soft-drink consumption, no physical activity and sedentary behaviour) were assessed by country-wise multivariable logistic regression analysis adjusting for age, sex, food insecurity and obesity with obesogenic behaviours being the outcome. Result The sample consisted of 153 929 students aged 12 to 15 years [mean (SD) age 13.8 (1.0) years; 49.3% girls]. Overall, bullying victimization (vs no bullying victimization) was significantly associated with greater odds for all types of obesogenic behaviour with the exception of physical activity, which showed an inverse association. Specifically, the ORs (95% CIs) were: anxiety-induced sleep problems 2.65 (2.43-2.88); fast-food consumption 1.36 (1.27-1.44); carbonated soft-drink consumption 1.14 (1.08-1.21); no physical activity 0.84 (0.79-0.89); and sedentary behaviour 1.34 (1.25-1.43). Conclusion In this large representative sample of adolescents from low- and middle-income countries, bullying victimization was found to be associated with several, but not all, obesogenic behaviours.

Summary: The novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, has caused the highly contagious COVID-19 disease which has severely impacted developed and low- to middle-income countries. Nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) such as social distancing, quarantine, and personal hygiene measures have been widely employed. A survey of 92 countries/territories found that quarantine and isolation at designated places were associated with lower incidence and mortality rates, while the use of sanitizer for personal hygiene reduced incidence. Mask deprivation was common regardless of economic level, and higher incidence and mortality were observed in countries/territories with higher economic levels.

Summary: The Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2, characterized by 15 mutations in the Spike protein, is associated with increased severity and transmission compared to the prototypical strains. Despite breakthrough infections and reduced antibody neutralization, full vaccination effectively reduces the risk of severe illness and hospitalization.

Chronic Low Back Pain and Incident Transient Ischemic Attack and Stroke in General Practices in Germany

Louis Jacob, Lee Smith, Ai Koyanagi, Josep Maria Haro, Jae Il Shin, Christian Tanislav, Alexis Schnitzler, Karel Kostev

Summary: The aim of this retrospective cohort study in Germany was to investigate the association between chronic low back pain (CLBP) and the incidence of transient ischemic attack (TIA) and stroke. The study included 159,440 adults diagnosed with CLBP between 2005 and 2019, matched with individuals without CLBP. Within 10 years, a higher percentage of CLBP patients (6.5%) were diagnosed with TIA or stroke compared to those without CLBP (5.9%). Cox regression analysis confirmed a significant association between CLBP and incident TIA or stroke (HR = 1.28, 95% CI = 1.22-1.35). More research is needed to better understand this relationship.

Summary: This study examined the dose-response association between cardiovascular health (CVH) and all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer mortality among cancer survivors. The findings showed that higher CVH levels were associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality and a curvilinear relationship with CVD deaths. However, no significant association was found between CVH and cancer deaths.

Summary: It is necessary to examine the trend in suicide-related behaviors among adolescents in South Korea over a longer period, including during COVID-19, as it is difficult to draw conclusions about the association between COVID-19 and a decrease in suicide attempts based on short-term comparisons. This study found that during the pandemic, the prevalence of sadness/despair and suicidal ideation and attempts among South Korean adolescents was higher than expected, indicating the need for further research on the impact of the pandemic on mental health and the establishment of prevention strategies for suicide ideation and attempts.
