Summary: Suicide is a major cause of death among adolescents, with a significant proportion occurring in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study found that bullying victimization is positively associated with suicide attempts, and this relationship is mediated by sleep deprivation and moderated by body mass index (BMI). These findings highlight the importance of targeting bullied adolescents and addressing factors such as sleep quality and body mass in suicide prevention interventions.

Summary: This systematic review synthesized qualitative evidence on factors influencing obesogenic behaviors in adolescent girls and women of reproductive age in LMICs. The review identified gender norms, dietary habits, food promotion, busy lifestyles, and limited exercise spaces as key factors affecting obesogenic behaviors. Addressing these factors at individual, social, physical, and environmental levels is essential for addressing obesity in LMICs.

Summary: This study examined the prevalence of traditional victimization and cybervictimization in 13 European and Asian countries, as well as the association with psychiatric symptoms. It found that interventions against bullying should focus on mental health components and address both traditional and cyberbullying, emphasizing reducing bullying behavior rather than just the location of bullying.

Summary: Transgender and mainstream youth were compared in terms of bullying involvement in a general population sample, with results showing that transgender youth reported more experiences of being bullied and perpetrating bullying than cisgender youth. Non-binary transgender identity was most strongly associated with involvement in bullying, followed by opposite sex identity and cisgender identity. This suggests that bullying during adolescence may serve as a mechanism of maintaining heteronormativity.

Summary: This study examines sex differences in social skills, behavior problems, and bullying engagement in adolescents. Girls scored higher on social skills and reported more internalizing problems, while boys reported more aggressive verbal behaviors. Adolescents with fewer social skills and more internalizing and externalizing problems are more likely to engage in bullying behaviors. Boys more frequently engage in bullying, while younger adolescents with more social skills tend to engage less in bullying behaviors.

Summary: The novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, has caused the highly contagious COVID-19 disease which has severely impacted developed and low- to middle-income countries. Nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) such as social distancing, quarantine, and personal hygiene measures have been widely employed. A survey of 92 countries/territories found that quarantine and isolation at designated places were associated with lower incidence and mortality rates, while the use of sanitizer for personal hygiene reduced incidence. Mask deprivation was common regardless of economic level, and higher incidence and mortality were observed in countries/territories with higher economic levels.

Summary: The aim of this retrospective cohort study in Germany was to investigate the association between chronic low back pain (CLBP) and the incidence of transient ischemic attack (TIA) and stroke. The study included 159,440 adults diagnosed with CLBP between 2005 and 2019, matched with individuals without CLBP. Within 10 years, a higher percentage of CLBP patients (6.5%) were diagnosed with TIA or stroke compared to those without CLBP (5.9%). Cox regression analysis confirmed a significant association between CLBP and incident TIA or stroke (HR = 1.28, 95% CI = 1.22-1.35). More research is needed to better understand this relationship.

Summary: This study examined the dose-response association between cardiovascular health (CVH) and all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer mortality among cancer survivors. The findings showed that higher CVH levels were associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality and a curvilinear relationship with CVD deaths. However, no significant association was found between CVH and cancer deaths.

Summary: It is necessary to examine the trend in suicide-related behaviors among adolescents in South Korea over a longer period, including during COVID-19, as it is difficult to draw conclusions about the association between COVID-19 and a decrease in suicide attempts based on short-term comparisons. This study found that during the pandemic, the prevalence of sadness/despair and suicidal ideation and attempts among South Korean adolescents was higher than expected, indicating the need for further research on the impact of the pandemic on mental health and the establishment of prevention strategies for suicide ideation and attempts.
