Rhinogobius formosanus Oshima, 1919 has long been considered an amphidromous goby. However, a landlocked population recently found in the Jingualiao Creek upstream of the Feitsui Reservoir in Taipei suggests that R. formosanus may complete its life in the river. This study aims to verify the habitat use of the landlocked population of R. formosanus collected from the Feitsui Reservoir and an amphidromous population collected in Malian Creek using otolith Sr:Ca ratio analysis. The hypothesis that early life history varies between the landlocked and migratory gobies was also tested. Genetic analyses show that the Feitsui Reservoir and Malian Creek populations are not genetically different. Rhinogobius formosanus from Malian Creek showed high-to-low otolith Sr:Ca ratios suggesting that these specimens spent a planktonic larval stage in the sea followed by a freshwater life at later stages. In contrast, R. formosanus from the Feitsui Reservoir showed constant lower otolith Sr:Ca ratios, implying a landlocked life history of fish in the creek upstream of the reservoir. In addition, the analysis of growth increments showed a longer pelagic larval duration for the fish in the Malian Creek (58.8 days) than those in the Feitsui Reservoir (38.8). Variation of pelagic larval duration in two genetically homogenous populations implies acclimatization to the reservoir by the landlocked gobies. This study shows that R. formosanus, like some other congeners, is capable of adapting to a freshwater landlocked environment in its early developmental stage and supports the hypothesis that landlocked populations may have a shorter pelagic larval duration.

Beyond crystal mushes: evidence for uptake of high-T pyroxene antecrysts from mid- to upper crustal andesites into tephras from the Central Plateau, New Zealand

Georg F. Zellmer, Yoshiyuki Iizuka, Charline Lormand, Anja Moebis

Summary: Pyroxene crystals from Central Plateau tephra are used to infer formation conditions, showing pseudo-pressures and temperatures at high oxygen fugacity and mid-to-upper crustal pressures. The data suggest uptake of high-temperature pyroxenes into ascending andesitic melts, precluding the presence of long-lived crustal mush zones in the studied tephras. Models of arc andesite genesis without a deep crustal hot zone beneath the Central Plateau are possible.

Amphidromous but endemic: Population connectivity of Rhinogobius gigas (Teleostei: Gobioidei)

Summary: Rhinogobius gigas, an amphidromous fish endemic to eastern Taiwan, has a limited distribution range due to its short marine larval duration, resulting in higher genetic homogeneity and recent population expansion. The lack of genetic structure among populations suggests a complex interaction between short pelagic larval duration, interspecific competition, and coastal currents in eastern Taiwan.

The impact of religious release fish on conservation

Ying-Chou Lee, Ping-Hung Chang, Chun-Han Shih, Jen-Chieh Shiao, Tzong-Der Tzeng, Wei-Che Chang

Summary: This study examines the impact of religious release fish on environmental conservation through questionnaire surveys and mark-recapture studies. The results suggest that public understanding of the impact of religious release fish is limited, and hatchery-reared black porgy may make up a significant portion of the population in northern Taiwan waters. The similar length distribution between hatchery-reared and wild stocks indicates that they may not interact with each other.

Demographics of Scomberomorus commerson in the Central Taiwan Strait

Jinn-Shing Weng, Li-Chi Cheng, Yun-Sin Lo, Jen-Chieh Shiao, Jia-Sin He, Ming-An Lee, Kwang-Ming Liu

Summary: This study investigated the demographic structure of the narrow-barred Spanish mackerel in the northwestern Pacific, including Taiwan's waters, by analyzing growth parameters, age composition, mortality, and sex ratio. The results indicated that the S. commerson caught in the central Taiwan Strait are mainly young fish aged 1(+) to 2(+) years. The estimated fishing mortality and exploitation rate suggested that overfishing was not occurring in this stock, contributing to the understanding of population dynamics and aiding in the management and conservation of this species.

Lithosphere beneath the Evolving Tianshan Orogen: Constraints from Xenoliths

Nancy Hui-Chun Chen, Peter A. Cawood, Yoshiyuki Iizuka

Summary: The Ortosuu and Uchkuduk regions of the Tianshan orogen in China contain basaltic rocks with different characteristics in the lithospheric mantle beneath. Petrology, chemical composition, and P-T geotherm data from xenoliths within the basalts reveal two groups of clinopyroxene based on their Mg# and trace element patterns. The distribution of rare earth elements suggests that the different clinopyroxene groups have different origins, with one group likely derived from the uppermost mantle and the other group derived from a depth close to the crust mantle boundary.

In Vivo Evidence of Single 13C and 15N Isotope-Labeled Methanotrophic Nitrogen-Fixing Bacterial Cells in Rice Roots

Shintaro Hara, Naohisa Wada, Sliver Sung-Yun Hsiao, Meng Zhang, Zhihua Bao, Yoshiyuki Iizuka, Der-Chuen Lee, Shusei Sato, Sen-Lin Tang, Kiwamu Minamisawa

Summary: This study demonstrates that type II methanotrophs in the root tissues of paddy rice perform methane oxidation and nitrogen fixation simultaneously at the single-cell level. The findings provide direct evidence of the activities of methanotrophs in root tissues, suggesting that they may provide fixed nitrogen to root systems or depend on different microenvironmental niches.

Cluster-glass freezing and antiferromagnetic phase transitions in corundum structure Mg3_xCoxTeO6

Kalimuthu Moovendaran, Raju Kalaivanan, I. Panneer Muthuselvam, N. Rajeesh Kumar, Yen-Chung Lai, Yoshiyuki Iizuka, Kwang-Yong Choi, Raman Sankar

Summary: We investigate the polycrystalline powder samples of Co-substituted Mg3_xCoxTeO6 (x = 0.0-2.4) using X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibilities, and specific heat analysis. The non-magnetic parent compound Mg3TeO6 has a trigonal R3 space group structure. The Co-substituted samples have a similar crystal structure to the parent compound, with distorted (Mg/Co)O6 and TeO6 octahedra observed through Rietveld refinements of synchrotron X-ray diffraction data. Interestingly, a magnetic phase transition from a non-magnetic ground state to an antiferromagnetic order through a cluster glass state is observed, where the antiferromagnetic order emerges above the percolation threshold (x > 1.0) and the cluster glass state is stabilized for x = 0.8.

Species-specific trophic enrichment factor of stable nitrogen and carbon isotopes in fish otolith organic matter

Ming-Tsung Chung, Yu-Yang Peng, Aafaq Nazir, Yu-Chun Wang, Pei-Lin Wang, Jen-Chieh Shiao

Summary: Through analyzing muscle, otolith organic matter, and fish diet, it was found that the delta N-15 values were highest in muscle, followed by otoliths, diet, and plankton. There was no significant difference in delta N-15 values between otolith and diet. However, there was a small but significant difference in delta C-13 values between muscle and otolith in farmed fishes. This research is important for studying the feeding ecology and nutrition behaviors of fish.

Bluefin tuna reveal global patterns of mercury pollution and bioavailability in the world's oceans

Chun-Mao Tseng, Shin-Jing Ang, Yi-Sheng Chen, Jen-Chieh Shiao, Carl H. Lamborg, Xiaoshuai He, John R. Reinfelder

Summary: Research shows that the mercury accumulation rate in bluefin tuna is highest in the Mediterranean Sea, decreases in the North Pacific, Indian Ocean, and North Atlantic Ocean, correlating with the concentrations of MeHg in regional seawater and zooplankton. These differences are related to the levels of mercury in each ocean subbasin, geogenic enrichment, and anthropogenic contamination.
