Summary: This study assessed the predictive value of NLR for cardiac death in cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The results showed that cats with higher NLR had a higher risk of cardiac death, and NLR was significantly associated with echocardiographic measurements.

Summary: In RCC patients undergoing laparoscopic partial or radical nephrectomy, NLR and PLR were identified as biomarkers of systemic inflammation associated with increased risk of sarcopenia. The best cutoff points for predicting sarcopenia risk were NLR >2.88 and PLR >135.63, with higher levels indicating a greater risk. Adjusting for various variables, patients with NLR >2.88 and PLR >135.63 had significantly higher risks of developing sarcopenia compared to those with lower NLR or PLR levels.

Summary: This study analyzed data from 991 ovarian cancer patients and found that the lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR) and platelet to neutrophil ratio (PNR) were independent prognostic indicators of ovarian cancer. In contrast, the platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) had limited prognostic value. In conclusion, LMR and PNR are superior prognostic indicators in ovarian cancer.

Summary: This study investigated the association between neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality risk in individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The study found that individuals with higher NLR had a 2-fold increased risk of long-term mortality. NLR may serve as an inexpensive and widely available prognostic marker in RA.

Summary: The study found that peripheral inflammatory markers (PIMs) significantly increased during migraine attacks, indicating that inflammation may play a role in migraines. Among different markers, NLR and NMR had poor ability to differentiate between migraine and non-migraine headaches, but performed well in distinguishing migraines from other types of headaches.

Summary: This study found that the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), neutrophil-to-monocyte ratio (NMR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) can be important indicators for evaluating the treatment of psoriasis patients. The SII showed strong positive correlations with the NLR, NMR, and PLR. TNF-α blockers such as Adalimumab, etanercept, and infliximab were found to be especially effective on PLR, NLR, and NMR.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the prognostic ability of Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in predicting in-hospital mortality among sepsis patients. The optimal cutoff for NLR was found to be 14.20, with patients above this cutoff having a lower chance of survival. However, after adjusting for confounders, there was no association between NLR and in-hospital mortality.

Summary: The study systematically assessed the effects of occupational lead exposure on leukocyte ratios and genotoxicity, finding that lead exposure increased NLR and induced genotoxicity. Elevated NLR was positively associated with DNA damage, and % tail DNA mediated part of the effect of lead on increasing NLR, suggesting potential mechanistic involvement of inflammation in the elevation of NLR caused by lead exposure.

Summary: High neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is associated with poor outcomes and delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) in patients with intracranial aneurysms (IAs), as well as an increased risk of rupture in unruptured aneurysms. NLR has a similar predictive ability for aneurysm size and treatment prognosis as C-reactive protein concentration. In patients with ruptured IAs and DCI, the NLR is lower at discharge compared to admission.

Summary: This meta-analysis supports the association between depression and inflammation, with NLR being a potential indicator of depression. However, no significant differences were found in PLR and MLR values between depressed subjects and controls. Further large-scale studies are needed to evaluate the role of PLR and MLR in depression.

Summary: Cytokines play a critical role in tumor cell development and multiplication, but their involvement in glioblastoma (GBM) is still not well understood. This study evaluated the inflammatory profile and identified potential molecular signatures specific to GBM. The results showed elevated neutrophils and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in GBM patients, with an inverse correlation between neutrophil count and survival time. Pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1 beta, IL-6, and IL-8 were significantly higher in GBM, while TNF alpha and HMGB1 were lower. IL-6 and IL-8 had the highest diagnostic potential for clinical prognosis, with a three-fold higher probability of GBM development above certain threshold values.

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed adult trauma patients who received prehospital simple thoracostomy (ST) or needle thoracostomy (NT). The results showed that ST did not improve the success rates of return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) and was associated with longer on-scene times in the prehospital setting.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study compared intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) signals between the transaxillary and transcervical approaches. The results showed that the transaxillary approach did not increase stress on the vagus nerve or recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN), according to IONM data. The study highlights the importance of considering patient positioning and laterality when interpreting IONM data.

Summary: The gender and minority gap in general surgery residency is narrowing, but there is limited data on the demographics of fellowship programs. Analysis of data from ERAS database and ACGME yearly reports from 2017 to 2021 showed that the trend of female applicants to surgical specialties remained stagnant, except for vascular surgery where there was a significant increase. The trend of minority applicants to surgical specialties also remained stagnant, with the exception of pediatric surgery which had significantly fewer minority applicants but increased minority trainees.

Summary: By analyzing RNA sequencing and microRNA, a miRNA panel associated with thyroid cancer progression and prognosis was discovered. This miRNA panel was found in both tissue and blood, and it accurately predicted lymph node metastases and recurrence. The CRISPR-based miRNA detection is a reliable and noninvasive tool for real-time assessment and prognosis of thyroid cancer patients, with great potential for patient care.
