We examine the impact of environmental diplomacy on a country's carbon emission level. Specifically, we test if the signing of environmental treaties yielded positive responses in CO2 emission. We employ common correlated effects mean group models on panel data of 76 developed and developing countries for over 35 years. Our analysis indicates that environmental diplomacy reduces CO2 emissions for developing countries in the short run. However, the results of FMOLS in the long-run estimates indicate that developed and developing countries do not adhere to treaty requirements as CO2 emissions increases with more treaties. Overall, our results imply that the signing of environmental treaties is likely to be mere international diplomacy that yields no result on climate change. We suggest that countries should fulfill their obligation under treaties rather than engage in annual rituals of signing treaties. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Inducing supplier backup via manufacturer information sharing under supply disruption risk

Guo Li, Xiaochuan Li, Mengqi Liu

Summary: With the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, global supply chains are facing an increasing risk of supply disruption. Backup production is considered as a potential solution to enhance supply chain resilience, but inducing suppliers to adopt backup production remains a challenge. This study examines a supply chain in a crisis-like new normal situation, where a manufacturer strategically uses private demand information to influence the supplier's decision on backup production. The findings reveal that when demand information is shared, the supplier's decision on backup production follows a cutoff structure. Information sharing has a significant impact on backup decision, promoting it under high demand potential while impeding it under low demand potential. Interestingly, the manufacturer may choose to share demand information with the supplier under certain conditions, resulting in the adoption of backup production and displaying nonmonotonic relations to backup cost.

Elective surgery scheduling under uncertainty in demand for intensive care unit and inpatient beds during epidemic outbreaks

Zongli Dai, Sandun C. Perera, Jian-Jun Wang, Sachin Kumar Mangla, Guo Li

Summary: Amid epidemic outbreaks like COVID-19, the availability of inpatient and ICU beds becomes uncertain and scarce due to a large number of patients. This creates challenges for elective surgery scheduling in terms of surgery duration, length of stay, and demand for beds. We propose a fuzzy model and an effective algorithm to minimize costs related to overtime, bed shortage, and patient waiting. Experimental results demonstrate the usefulness of the fuzzy model when data is insufficient, as well as the computational efficacy, robustness, and adaptability of the proposed framework compared to existing models and algorithms.

The environmental footprint of international business in Africa; The role of natural resources

Zhonghang Gong, Yuqin Wu, Vincent Tawiah, Zakari Abdulrasheed

Summary: This paper investigates whether the impact of foreign direct investment and trade on the environment varies between natural resource-rich countries and non-natural resource-rich countries in Africa. Using robust econometric models, we find that foreign direct investment and trade have a positive effect on non-natural resource-rich countries, supporting the pollution halo hypothesis. In contrast, foreign direct investment and trade are associated with lower environmental quality in natural resource-rich countries, supporting the pollution haven argument. These findings suggest that non-natural resource-rich countries benefit from technological transfer through foreign direct investment and trade.

Sustainable economic development in OECD countries: Does energy security matter?

Abdulrasheed Zakari, Hammed Oluwaseyi Musibau

Summary: Energy security is crucial for economic growth and plays a significant role in achieving sustainable economic and financial development. The research shows that energy security enhances both economic and financial sustainability, although its influence varies across different quantiles. Initially, energy security hindered sustainable economic development due to overreliance on fossil fuels, but the transition to renewable energy mitigated this negative impact and fostered sustainable economic growth. Similarly, energy security promotes long-term sustainable financial development. Therefore, there is a need to diversify energy sources and promote the adoption of renewable energy technologies to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and mitigate environmental impacts.
