Summary: Deforestation and poaching have greatly reduced the population of apex predators like tigers and leopards in Southeast Asia, while some small felids thrive in human-modified landscapes. It is important to understand how medium-sized felids cope with anthropogenic disturbances in order to conserve threatened felids and maintain diverse food webs. This study focuses on two cryptic felids, the Asiatic golden cat and the bay cat, and finds that both species have poor tolerance to habitat degradation.

This study identified specific understory bird species associated with changes in forest structure due to selective logging, and proposed using them as monitoring tools. The research found that certain bird species were linked to unlogged areas with higher tree density, while others were favored by logging activities and visual obstruction in the understory. Threshold abundance levels were also determined for bird guilds in both logged and unlogged forests.

Summary: This study analyzed long-term changes in forest and savanna distribution in central Brazil using soil organic carbon isotope ratios as proxies. It found a pattern of woody vegetation expansion into savannas and denser forests and savannas over the past approximately 1,600 years. Variations in vegetation change rates were attributed to local environmental factors, with instances of tree cover decline associated with dry savannas. The results suggest a regional increase in moisture and woody vegetation expansion prior to modern deforestation, providing insights for climate change mitigation efforts.

Summary: The presence of vegetation plays a crucial role in enhancing environmental quality in urban areas, but the increase in population and city development has led to a decrease in vegetated areas. Research in Medan found changes in vegetation cover over the past two decades, with a reduction in high-density vegetation and an increase in low-density vegetation. To improve green space and maintain environmental quality, attention should be given to areas with less vegetation and efforts should be made to replant in areas lacking vegetation.

Summary: Australia experienced severe drought, high temperatures, and massive forest fires in 2019 and early 2020. However, the eucalyptus trees showed strong fire resilience, and the understory vegetation quickly recovered in 2020. Using multiple sensors, this study analyzed the impacts of fire and climate on forest areas in Australia and found that the forests experienced significant losses in 2019 but showed large gains in 2020 due to the high resilience of trees and favorable conditions. The results highlight the potential of monitoring and assessing post-fire recovery using remote sensing.
