Summary: This meta-analysis supports the association between depression and inflammation, with NLR being a potential indicator of depression. However, no significant differences were found in PLR and MLR values between depressed subjects and controls. Further large-scale studies are needed to evaluate the role of PLR and MLR in depression.

Summary: Sex-dependent differences exist in the contribution of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), and mean platelet volume-to-platelet ratio (MPR) to COVID-19 severity and mortality. The mortality rate of COVID-19 is higher among men, and men have higher levels of NLR, MLR, and MPR compared to women. NLR, MLR, and PLR have better sensitivity for predicting pneumonia severity in men, while their specificity is enhanced in women.

Summary: This study analyzed data from 991 ovarian cancer patients and found that the lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR) and platelet to neutrophil ratio (PNR) were independent prognostic indicators of ovarian cancer. In contrast, the platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) had limited prognostic value. In conclusion, LMR and PNR are superior prognostic indicators in ovarian cancer.

Summary: This study aimed to assess whether the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) is independently associated with all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients. The results showed that high PLR levels can independently predict all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in MHD patients.

Summary: The role of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in predicting spontaneous preterm birth was investigated. Retrospective data collected from hospital records between February 2018 and November 2022 showed that NLR and PLR values can predict preterm birth with high sensitivity and specificity. Predicting preterm birth allows for sensitive and smooth management of the pregnancy process.

Summary: This study examines the role of alterations in the immune-inflammation system in affective disorders, specifically major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD). The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte/lymphocyte ratio (MLR) are investigated as inflammation markers. The findings reveal elevated NLR and MLR in first-episode and recurrent MDD patients, as well as higher NLR and MLR and lower PLR in BD patients. Moreover, BD manic episode patients have significantly higher NLR and MLR compared to BD depressive episode patients or MDD patients. Overall, this study highlights the importance of systemic inflammation in the pathophysiology of MDD and BD, particularly during manic BD episodes.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association and potential non-linear relationship between neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR) with depression. Based on a cross-sectional study of US adults, it was found that only PLR was significantly associated with depression. Furthermore, the relationships between NLR, PLR, and MLR with depression were found to be non-linear.

Summary: In RCC patients undergoing laparoscopic partial or radical nephrectomy, NLR and PLR were identified as biomarkers of systemic inflammation associated with increased risk of sarcopenia. The best cutoff points for predicting sarcopenia risk were NLR >2.88 and PLR >135.63, with higher levels indicating a greater risk. Adjusting for various variables, patients with NLR >2.88 and PLR >135.63 had significantly higher risks of developing sarcopenia compared to those with lower NLR or PLR levels.

Summary: This study found that the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are significantly higher in patients with depression. However, the monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) is slightly higher but not significantly different. Sensitivity and subgroup analysis revealed differences in inflammatory ratios in different regions and in patients with post-stroke depression (PSD).

Summary: The prevalence of kidney disease and the number of renal biopsies are increasing in the elderly population. Differences in clinical presentation and renal pathology exist between elderly and younger patients. The relatively high prevalence of potentially curative kidney diseases in the elderly emphasizes the importance of renal biopsy in this age group.

Summary: This study found that patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who are infected with COVID-19 have a higher risk of severe disease and mortality. Hematological indices, including NLR, SII, PLR, and LCR, are associated with in-hospital mortality in CKD patients. Among these markers, NLR and SII have the best ability to distinguish patients at higher risk of death.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the daily variability of bicarbonate in hemodialysis patients and identify the factors that affect this issue. The results showed that relying solely on pre-dialysis tCO2 values to define metabolic acidosis may lead to misclassification, as the agreement between pre- and post-dialysis tCO2 and HCO3- was not good.

Summary: This study investigated the incidence, causative agents, and outcomes of peritonitis episodes in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis. The results showed that both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms were common causes of peritonitis, with a higher rate of catheter removals and lower resolution rate observed in Gram-negative cases. The findings suggest that knowledge of prevalent microbial agents and appropriate treatment adjustments are important in reducing the incidence of peritonitis.

Summary: This study evaluated the etiologies, comorbidities, and outcomes of AKI in Turkey. The results showed that prerenal etiologies were more common, with nephrotoxic agent exposure being the most common renal etiology. A high proportion of patients required kidney replacement therapy, and the recovery rate at 6 months varied. Patients from the Eastern Anatolian region had a higher mortality rate.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of a consistent percutaneous procedure for peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter placement in initiating immediate-start PD in patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). The results showed that it is feasible to start PD within 1 hour of catheter placement, with no cases of leakage, technique failure, or the need for hemodialysis. Although there were minor complications, it is of significant importance for initiating PD.

Summary: Cardiovascular disease is common in patients with chronic kidney disease and is the leading cause of mortality. Advanced age, hypertension, uremic toxins, and other factors contribute to increased cardiovascular disease risk. Sarcopenia, a decrease in muscle strength, is prevalent in chronic kidney disease patients and is associated with lower quality of life and increased mortality risk.
