This study was performed to survey the incidence of Escherichia coli O157:H7 contamination in fish samples which were obtained from different fish farms and retail markets. For this purpose, a total of 140 fish samples were analyzed according to ISO 16654 and screened for virulence genes by mPCR. Antibiotic susceptibility tests were performed with the disc diffusion method and isolates were genotyped by using Enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC) PCR. Of the 140 analyzed sample, two (1.4%), from the same farm, were found to be contaminated with E. coli O157 serogroup, one of which harbored stx1 and the other eaeA gene. E. coli O157 serogroup were resistant to only ciprofloxacin and were not capable of forming biofilm and their ERIC-PCR patterns were different. In conclusion, the existence of pathogenic E. coli O157 serogroup in fish samples might be a significant threat to public health and fish could serve as a vehicle for transmission of these bacteria to consumers in Turkey.

Biofilm formation, antibiotic resistance and genotyping of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli isolated from retail chicken meats

A. Dishan, H. Hizlisoy, M. Barel, H. B. Disli, C. Gungor, N. Ertas Onmaz, Z. Gonulalan, S. Al, Y. Yildirim

Summary: This study examined the presence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) in chicken meat samples and evaluated their virulence factors, antibiotic resistance, biofilm formation ability, and genetic relationships. The findings highlight the potential health risks associated with STEC contamination in chicken meat.

Profile of Aliarcobacter spp. from edible giblets: Genetic diversity, antibiotic resistance, biofilm formation

Candan Gungor, Harun Hizlisoy, Nurhan Ertas Onmaz, Dursun Alp Gundog, Mukaddes Barel, H. Burak Disli, Adalet Dishan, Serhat Al, Yeliz Yildirim, Zafer Gonulalan

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of Aliarcobacter spp. in edible internal organs of different animal species and analyzed their antimicrobial resistance, virulence profiles, biofilm-forming capabilities, and phylogenetic relationships. The results showed a relatively high detection rate of Aliarcobacter spp., predominantly A. butzleri and A. cryaerophilus, with most isolates exhibiting multidrug resistance and weak biofilm formation. The presence of pathogenic and multidrug-resistant Aliarcobacter spp. in food poses a potential risk to public health and control measures are necessary to prevent the spread of these strains.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in raw milk and cheese from different animal species in Kayseri Province, Turkiye, using real-time PCR. The study found that T. gondii DNA was present in 8% of sheep raw milk samples, 4% of goat raw milk samples, and none of the cheese samples. These results suggest that the presence of T. gondii DNA in raw milk samples sold in Kayseri Province may pose a risk to public health.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic diversity, prevalence, and mechanisms of resistance to quinolone antibiotics in 178 Campylobacter jejuni isolates from humans, cattle, dogs, and chickens in Turkey. The results showed that there were 21 clonal complexes (CCs) and 78 different sequence types (STs) among the isolates, with CC21, CC353, CC206, and CC257 being the predominant clones. Quinolone resistance was detected in 41% of the isolates, and all resistant isolates had a specific mutation in the gyrA gene. The study provided important insights into the transmission pathways of C. jejuni in Turkey, suggesting that broiler meat and dogs may be the most important sources of human campylobacteriosis in the country.

Biofilm formation and antibiotic resistance profiles of water-borne pathogens

Kursat Koskeroglu, Mukaddes Barel, Harun Hizlisoy, Yeliz Yildirim

Summary: Water sources are significant reservoirs for transmitting antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and they pose an important public health problem. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of ESBL-producing isolates in water samples, as well as their susceptibility to antibiotics, biofilm ability, and presence of antibiotic resistance genes. The results showed the existence of multidrug-resistant bacteria with co-existing mcr and ESBL genes in water sources, highlighting the increasing threat to public health.

Effects of Shiitake mushroom (Lentinus edodes) supplementation into quail diets on performance, blood serum parameters and intestine microbial populations

C. Ay, I. Ulger, M. Kaliber, H. Hizlisoy, T. Ayasan

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Shiitake mushroom supplementation on live weight, feed consumption, blood serum biochemical parameters, and intestine bacteria populations in quails. The results showed that Shiitake mushroom supplementation had significant effects on live weight, feed conversion ratio, and blood serum glucose levels. However, it had no significant effects on feed consumption, blood serum total protein, total cholesterol, triglyceride levels, and intestine bacteria populations. Increasing Shiitake mushroom supplementation ratios worsened the growth performance of quails.

Effects of Reishi Mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) Powder Inclusion into Quail Diets on Animal Performance, Carcass Traits, Intestinal Microflora and Serum Parameters

I Ulger, M. Kaliber, H. Hizlisoy, T. Ayasan

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of Reishi mushroom inclusion into quail diets on various parameters such as live weight, feed consumption, carcass traits, intestinal microflora, and serum biochemical parameters. The results showed that there were no significant differences in these parameters between the treatment groups and the control group. Therefore, the use of Reishi mushroom in quail diets did not have any negative effects on growth performance or other evaluated parameters.

Meta-analysis of the global prevalence of Enterococcus spp. in foods: Antibiotic resistance profile of Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium

Mukaddes Barel, Elif Celik, Guven Gungor, Aytac Akcay, Candan Gungor, Serhat Al, Harun Hizlisoy, Nurhan Ertas Onmaz, Yeliz Yildirim, Zafer Gonulalan

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and diversity of Enterococcus spp. and antibiotic-resistant Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium isolates in different foods worldwide. Meta-analytical methods were used, and the results showed varying prevalence rates of Enterococcus spp. in different food types and countries. The findings contribute to the epidemiological surveillance of these bacteria and their antibiotic resistance in foods.
