The Innovative Medicines Initiative-funded COMBACTE consortium fosters academic-industry partnership in pioneering studies to combat serious bacterial infections. We describe how this partnership is advancing the development of 2 monoclonal antibodies, MEDI4893 and MEDI3902, for the prevention of nosocomial pneumonia.

Experimental investigation of efficient and simple wind-turbine based on DFIG-direct power control using LCL-filter for stand-alone mode

Fayssal Amrane, Bruno Francois, Azeddine Chaiba

Summary: This paper proposes an experimental implementation study of a Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS) based on efficient Direct Power Control (DPC). It focuses on the stand-alone mode for variable wind speed application using Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG). The study shows that using IP controllers instead of traditional PI controllers and implementing LCL-Type filters can improve the power quality and wind power performance.

Transient Stability Assessment and Enhancement of Grid-Forming Converters Embedding Current Reference Saturation as Current Limiting Strategy

Ebrahim Rokrok, Taoufik Qoria, Antoine Bruyere, Bruno Francois, Xavier Guillaud

Summary: This paper investigates the transient stability of a grid-forming converter with a current reference saturation strategy. The impact of the current reference angle on transient stability is explored, and analytical formulas for critical clearing angle (CCA) and critical clearing time (CCT) are derived considering different current reference angle values. The optimal value that enhances transient stability and allows mode switching is calculated. Experimental tests validate the theoretical approaches.

Engineered live bacteria suppress Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in mouse lung and dissolve endotracheal-tube biofilms

Rocco Mazzolini, Irene Rodriguez-Arce, Laia Fernandez-Barat, Carlos Pinero-Lambea, Victoria Garrido, Agustin Rebollada-Merino, Anna Motos, Antoni Torres, Maria Jesus Grillo, Luis Serrano, Maria Lluch-Senar

Summary: Engineered bacteria have been developed to effectively treat lung infections and dissolve biofilms associated with ventilator-associated pneumonia. These bacteria have been genetically modified to target and kill harmful bacteria in the lungs, providing a potential new treatment option for respiratory infections.

Awake Prone Positioning for Non-Intubated COVID-19 Patients with Acute Respiratory Failure: A Meta-Analysis of Randomised Controlled Trials

Huzaifa Ahmad Cheema, Amna Siddiqui, Sidhant Ochani, Alishba Adnan, Mahnoor Sukaina, Ramsha Haider, Abia Shahid, Mohammad Ebad Ur Rehman, Rehmat Ullah Awan, Harpreet Singh, Natalie Duric, Brigitta Fazzini, Antoni Torres, Tamas Szakmany

Summary: A meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of awake prone positioning (APP) in non-intubated patients with COVID-19-related acute hypoxemic respiratory failure and to identify the subpopulations that may benefit the most from it. The results showed that APP reduced the risk of intubation in the overall population, especially in patients requiring higher levels of respiratory support in an ICU setting, but did not decrease the overall mortality risk.

A Data-Driven Under Frequency Load Shedding Scheme in Power Systems

Hemin Golpira, Hassan Bevrani, Arturo Roman Messina, Bruno Francois

Summary: This paper presents a measurement-based under-frequency load shedding scheme that considers time delays, measurement uncertainties, and communication network faults. It proposes an iterative approach using a moving first-degree polynomial function to estimate the frequency nadir and associated time. It also develops a novel method to simultaneously estimate power imbalance and system inertia constant. Furthermore, it investigates a mathematical index to calculate a threshold for power imbalance, and proposes a systematic approach for specifying the amount of load to be shed.

Systematic review of ceftaroline fosamil in the management of patients with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia

Antoni Torres, Alona Kuraieva, Gregory G. Stone, Catia Cilloniz

Summary: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is responsible for a variety of problematic infections in the community and healthcare settings, including pneumonia, with severe disease and high mortality rates. Ceftaroline fosamil has been shown to be a possible alternative treatment for MRSA pneumonia.
