Drought stress is a major concern for current agriculture as it limits plant growth and yield. An experiment was conducted with a drought susceptible rice (Oryza sativaL. cv. BRRI dhan29) to explore the potential functions and possible mechanisms of exogenous glutathione (GSH)-induced drought stress tolerance. Fifteen-day-old seedlings, GSH-pretreated or non-pretreated (0.2 mM GSH for 72 h), were subjected to PEG-induced (15% polyethylene glycol 6000) drought stress for 4 days. Rice plants exposed to drought stress displayed reduced growth, which was correlated with reduced chlorophyll content, water balance, antioxidant enzymes activities and mineral contents (K+, Ca(2+)and Mg2+), as evidenced by principle component analysis (PCA) and heatmap clustering. The PCA also revealed that hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) accumulations were strongly linked with the declined growth and development of rice plants under drought stress. Importantly, pretreatment with GSH improved the growth responses of rice plants to drought stress. GSH strengthened numerous physio-biochemical processes which were coupled with increased uptake of K+, Ca(2+)and Mg2+, enhanced accumulation of soluble sugars, higher activities of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants. Moreover, GSH-pretreated seedlings under drought stress conditions had lower levels of O2 center dot-, H(2)O(2)and MDA which indicates successful adaptation of rice seedlings to drought stress. The results of PCA strongly supported that GSH conferred drought tolerance mostly by enhancing antioxidant activities and mineral homeostasis. Collectively, our findings provide an important prospect for use of GSH in modulating drought tolerance in rice plants. Breeding strategies should therefore be undertaken to increase the GSH content of rice plants as a means to increase drought tolerance.

Summary: This study aimed to screen wheat genotypes for salt tolerance using morphological and molecular markers. Through the assessment of genetic variation and marker-assisted selection, several salt-tolerant genotypes, including the most tolerant Akbar genotype, were identified. These screened genotypes will serve as valuable genetic resources for salinity tolerance research in wheat breeding.

Biochar amendment alters root morphology of maize plant: Its implications in enhancing nutrient uptake and shoot growth under reduced irrigation regimes

Heng Wan, Xuezhi Liu, Qimiao Shi, Yiting Chen, Miao Jiang, Jiarui Zhang, Bingjing Cui, Jingxiang Hou, Zhenhua Wei, Mohammad Anwar Hossain, Fulai Liu

Summary: Biochar amendment improves crop growth and nutrient utilization in the soil, specifically in terms of root morphology and nutrient uptake in maize plants. Although biochar has a negative effect on soil phosphorus, it positively affects nitrogen, potassium, and calcium. While biochar lowers nutrient concentrations in shoot tissues, it increases total nutrient uptake and biomass. The use of limited root irrigation methods, such as alternate partial root-zone drying, enhances root-to-shoot ratio.

Summary: The nickel(II) complex NiL2 was synthesized using the bidentate ligand S-hexyl-beta-N-(4-nitrobenzylidene)dithiocarbazate (HL) and characterized using various physicochemical techniques including single crystal X-ray diffraction. The metal complex exhibited increased fluorescence intensity compared to the free ligand. Analysis of the non-covalent interactions of the complex NiL2 was conducted using Hirshfeld surface analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The antibacterial activity of the ligand and complex against Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae was found to be inactive.

Summary: The in vitro and in vivo efficacy of three biocontrol agents, Trichoderma viride, Pseudomonas fluorescence, and Bacillus subtilis, were tested against Rhizoctonia solani infection. All biocontrol agents significantly reduced the growth of R. solani, with T. viride showing the highest inhibition percentage. The biocontrol agents also enhanced coriander resistance to R. solani by stimulating salicylic acid, phenolics, and antioxidant enzymes.

Javeria Bashir, Md Belal Chowdhury, Rahanuma Raihanu Kathak, Shuvashis Dey, Atiya Tahira Tasnim, Mohammed A. Amin, Yusuf Valentino Kaneti, Mostafa Kamal Masud, Md Shahriar A. Hossain

Summary: Nanoarchitectured mesoporous metal alloy films exhibit great potential in integrating the catalytic capabilities of their constituent metals, and various strategies such as template-based and template-free approaches have been developed for their fabrication. Recently, electrochemical methods have gained attention due to their simplicity, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness in fabricating these films. This review comprehensively discusses the electrochemical approaches for fabricating metallic mesoporous alloy films, with a focus on bimetallic and trimetallic alloys, and their applications in hydrogen production, fuel cells, and sensors.

Biochar actions for the mitigation of plant abiotic stress

Shahin Imran, Prosenjit Sarker, Md Najmol Hoque, Newton Chandra Paul, Md Asif Mahamud, Jotirmoy Chakrobortty, Md Tahjib-Ul-Arif, Arafat Abdel Hamed Abdel Latef, Mirza Hasanuzzaman, Mohammad Saidur Rhaman

Summary: Abiotic stresses are the main constraints to successful crop production, but biochar can increase crop yield and alleviate the adverse effects of stresses. Biochar improves soil quality and enhances plant tolerance and yield by modulating physiological and biochemical processes. However, more research is needed on the stress-relieving roles of biochar.

Identification of QTLs for Yield and Associated Traits in F2 Population of Rice Rohini

Rohini Bhat, Anil Kumar Singh, Muntazir Mushtaq, Romesh Kumar Salgotra, Manmohan Sharma, Basharat Ahmad Bhat, Umer Basu, Ibrahim Al-ashkar, Mohammad Anwar Hossain, Akihiro Ueda, Ayman El Sabagh

Summary: Identification of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) controlling yield and yield-related traits in rice was performed using the composite interval mapping (CIM) method. A total of 30 QTLs governing nine different traits were identified, with most of the QTLs detected on chromosome 2. Further studies on chromosome 2 could help unlock more QTLs for rice varieties. These identified QTLs can be used for marker-assisted selection (MAS) breeding and have important implications for future crop improvement strategies in rice.
