Graphical comparison of surgeon outcomes for the audit of a national corneal transplant registry (OTAG study 32)

Cathy Hopkinson, Elinor Curnow, Daniel F. P. Larkin, Jeremy Prydal, Stephen Tuft

Summary: This study compares surgeon-specific corneal transplantation outcomes using Kaplan-Meier survival curves and funnel plots. The results show that risk-adjustment provides more accurate results, and funnel plots are a visually accessible method for comparison.

New Pharmacological Approaches for the Treatment of Neurotrophic Keratitis

Su Yin Koay, Daniel F. P. Larkin

Summary: Neurotrophic keratitis is a rare degenerative condition caused by damage to the trigeminal nerve, resulting in the loss of corneal sensory innervation and subsequent impaired healing of the corneal epithelium. Supportive management to promote epithelial healing and prevent disease progression is the mainstay of treatment, with various novel pharmacological approaches being proposed.

Treatment of Inherited Retinal Dystrophies with Somatic Cell Therapy Medicinal Product: A Review

Giacomo Maria Bacci, Valentina Becherucci, Elisa Marziali, Andrea Sodi, Franco Bambi, Roberto Caputo

Summary: Inherited retinal dystrophies and retinal degenerations related to common diseases are major causes of low vision in pediatric and elderly age groups. Advances in molecular biology and gene-editing techniques offer new possibilities for treating disabling diseases and reducing complications burden.

Expanding the Spectrum of Oculocutaneous Albinism: Does Isolated Foveal Hypoplasia Really Exist?

Camilla Rocca, Lucia Tiberi, Sara Bargiacchi, Viviana Palazzo, Samuela Landini, Elisa Marziali, Roberto Caputo, Francesca Tinelli, Viviana Marchi, Alessandro Benedetto, Angelica Pagliazzi, Giacomo Maria Bacci

Summary: This article provides a retrospective review of clinical data of patients with albinism and explores the relationship between genotype and phenotype. The study confirms the pathogenicity of common gene mutations and suggests the importance of comprehensive characterization in patients with isolated foveal hypoplasia for accurate diagnosis.

Acute Rejection Following COVID-19 Vaccination in Penetrating Keratoplasty in a Young Male - A Case Report and Review of Literature

Elisa Marziali, Roberta Pasqualetti, Giacomo Bacci, Cinzia de Libero, Roberto Caputo

Summary: We report a case of acute keratoplasty rejection in a boy 12 days after receiving the BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine. The corneal edema completely resolved after one-week treatment with topical Dexamethasone 2% eye drops. This case suggests that the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine may be associated with acute keratoplasty rejection in children, which responds completely to topical steroids. Ophthalmologists should be aware of the risk of cornea decompensation after COVID-19 vaccination in children who received a cornea transplant.

Optical Coherence Tomography Significance in Managing Early Onset of Optic Pathway Gliomas in Children Younger than 5 Years of Age-A Retrospective Study

Rossana Pavone, Carla Fonte, Iacopo Sardi, Roberto Caputo, Elisa Marziali, Fabio Mazzeo, Jacopo Secci, Alessia Bergamini, Salvatore De Masi, Maria Carmela Leo, Maria Luigia Censullo, Giacomo Maria Bacci

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the significance of optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in managing pediatric optic pathway gliomas (OPGs) in children younger than 5 years of age. A retrospective monocentric study was conducted, and SD-OCT scans were used to assess retinal nerve fibre layer thickness. The study confirmed the role of SD-OCT in therapeutic decisions and visual rehabilitation strategy planning for OPGs.

Design and Conduct of Randomized Clinical Trials Evaluating Surgical Innovations in Ophthalmology: A Systematic Review

Augusto Azuara-blanco, Aaron Carlisle, Matthew O'donnell, Hari Jayaram, Gus Gazzard, Daniel F. P. Larkin, Louisa Wickham, Noemi Lois

Summary: The study investigated key aspects of the design, conduct, and reporting of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of novel surgeries. The results showed that important details were often missing in ophthalmic surgical procedures, such as the surgical learning curve, surgeon's previous experience, and quality assurance. Therefore, the use of the IDEAL framework is necessary to improve the quality of study design.

P. Leroy, Jacopo Secci, Giacomo M. M. Bacci

Summary: This study found that congenital stationary night blindness associated with CACNA1F gene variants may lead to optic nerve involvement without any signs of progressive optic neuropathy. These findings have clear significance in the preparation for future CACNA1F gene therapy trials.
