Tear N-glycomics in vernal and atopic keratoconjunctivitis

Summary: The study aimed to investigate tear fluid N-Glycome from patients with VKC and AKC to identify specific changes and potential glyco-biomarkers. Three distinct patterns for CTRL, VKC, and AKC patients were identified in terms of relative intensities for some N-glycans structures, with major variations involving bisecting and hyperfucosylated glycoforms. The tear MS profiles showed rich specific glycoforms, particularly with high fucosylation degree, providing important information for a better understanding of VKC and AKC alterations at the molecular level.

Evaluation of Clinical Efficacy and Safety of Prolonged Treatment of Vernal and Atopic Keratoconjunctivitis Using Topical Tacrolimus

Summary: Treatment with topical tacrolimus ophthalmic suspension for VKC and AKC leads to clinical improvement and stable stages of the diseases. The remission rates increase over time and the need for concomitant administration of steroid eye drops decreases with age. Cluster analysis helps to categorize patients into different subgroups for better understanding of disease characteristics.

Summary: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is an underdiagnosed ocular surface disease in Asia, with limited epidemiological data. It has a significant impact on patients' quality of life and can even lead to vision loss. The management and treatment of VKC varies across Asia, and there is a lack of precise diagnostic criteria and effective treatments. To address this issue, the Management of Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis in Asia (MOVIA) Expert Working Group developed best-practice recommendations based on available evidence and clinical expertise.

Surgical Treatment of Corneal Shield Ulcer in Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis: A Systematic Review

Biologics for allergy: therapeutic potential for ocular allergic diseases and adverse effects on the eye

Summary: The use of biologics targeting specific antibodies and receptors has significantly improved the treatment outcomes in allergic diseases. However, these drugs have not been approved for ocular allergic diseases. While some studies have reported beneficial effects, adverse ocular symptoms have also been observed. Different biologics may have specific effects on different ocular allergies, and allergists must fully understand the effects of each drug on the eye. This review outlines the potential therapeutic and adverse effects of various biologics on allergic diseases of the eye.

When to start tacrolimus ointment for vernal keratoconjunctivitis? A proposed treatment protocol

Oral Janus kinase inhibitors for atopic dermatitis

Summary: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common inflammatory skin condition driven by immune activation of various T-helper cell subtypes. Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors show promise in targeting multiple immune pathways involved in AD and have demonstrated efficacy in clinical trials. However, further studies are needed to evaluate the long-term safety profile of systemic JAK inhibitors in AD patients. This review summarizes the current literature on the safety and efficacy of oral JAK inhibitors in AD and discusses future research directions.

Acute Rejection Following COVID-19 Vaccination in Penetrating Keratoplasty in a Young Male - A Case Report and Review of Literature

Summary: We report a case of acute keratoplasty rejection in a boy 12 days after receiving the BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine. The corneal edema completely resolved after one-week treatment with topical Dexamethasone 2% eye drops. This case suggests that the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine may be associated with acute keratoplasty rejection in children, which responds completely to topical steroids. Ophthalmologists should be aware of the risk of cornea decompensation after COVID-19 vaccination in children who received a cornea transplant.

The study confirmed the role of SD-OCT in therapeutic decisions and visual rehabilitation strategy planning for OPGs.

Therefore, the use of the IDEAL framework is necessary to improve the quality of study design.
