Summary: The study found that influenza vaccination in heart failure patients was associated with a lower risk of mortality and cardiovascular mortality during the influenza season, but a higher risk of hospitalization. There was no significant association between influenza vaccination and all-cause mortality during the non-influenza season.

Summary: This study investigated the risk of cardiovascular mortality in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD). The results showed that diabetes, albuminuria, and anemia were significant risk factors for cardiovascular mortality, while the predictive value of LDL-cholesterol for cardiovascular mortality in advanced CKD may be limited.

Summary: In this retrospective cohort study, a U-shaped association between glycation gap (GGap) and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality was found. Individuals with a GGap less than -0.83% and greater than 0.90% had a 36% and 21% increased risk of mortality, respectively, compared to those with a GGap of 0.09%-0.38%. The GGap values associated with the lowest risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality were 0.38% and 0.78%, respectively.

Summary: Polyphenol intake was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality in the Spanish adult population. Specifically, the intake of dihydroflavonols, flavonols, methoxyphenols, tyrosols, alkylmethoxyphenols, hydroxycinnamic acids, and hydroxyphenilacetic acids was associated with a decreased risk of mortality.

Summary: Long-term continuous use of glimepiride is associated with better survival, fewer hospitalizations and emergency visits for heart failure, and fewer hospitalizations for acute myocardial infarction or stroke. High-dose glimepiride has greater cardiovascular protective advantages than low-dose glimepiride. The cardiovascular protective effect of glimepiride may be related to the increase in epoxyeicosatrienoic acid levels through soluble epoxide hydrolase inhibition.

Summary: This retrospective, longitudinal study demonstrated that high levels of remnant cholesterol are associated with an increased risk of incident type 2 diabetes (T2D), particularly in individuals without traditional T2D risk factors and metabolic abnormalities. These findings suggest that remnant cholesterol profiles provide additional information in predicting future progression of T2D, independent of conventional lipid parameters.

Summary: Ischemic stroke is a common cause of death in adults, but the mortality after pediatric ischemic stroke has not been well researched. This study investigated the long-term and cause-specific mortality in children with ischemic stroke and their first-degree relatives. The study found that the mortality rate was significantly higher in children with ischemic stroke compared to controls, and the risk of death remained elevated even 20 years later.

Summary: This study investigated the yearly trend of influenza vaccination and factors associated with being unvaccinated for influenza in subjects with diabetes over the past decade. The results showed that the prevalence of influenza vaccination in subjects with diabetes tended to increase every year, reaching almost 60% in 2019. Younger age, males, smoking, low-income status, high education level, and poor glycemic control were associated with being unvaccinated.

Summary: The risk of death and heart failure was higher in hospitalized patients with type 1 diabetes compared to type 2 diabetes after COVID-19 infection, while the risks of other non-fatal cardiovascular and renal disease events were similar. Compared to influenza, both type 1 and type 2 diabetes patients had a higher mortality rate when hospitalized due to COVID-19, emphasizing the importance of vaccination and preventive measures for diabetes patients.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate patients with streptococcal infective endocarditis (IE) and describe the clinical features and outcomes according to streptococcal species. The results showed that S. mitis/oralis and S. gallolyticus were the most frequent streptococcal species causing IE, and S. gallolyticus IE was associated with a lower rate of heart valve surgery during admission compared with S. mitis/oralis IE.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the relationship between cumulative inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) doses and the risk of hospitalization for pneumonia in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The results showed a positive correlation between ICS dose and the risk of hospitalization for pneumonia. Therefore, it is recommended to use the lowest possible dose of ICS in the treatment of COPD and only for patients who truly need it.

Summary: The NUDGE-FLU trial aims to investigate the effectiveness of digitally delivered behavioral nudges in increasing influenza vaccination uptake among older adults. It has randomized 964,870 Danish citizens aged 65 years and above to receive either no nudge or one of 9 electronic letters leveraging different behavioral science strategies. The trial will provide important insights into effective communication strategies to maximize vaccination uptake among high-risk groups.

Summary: This study describes the experience of implementing a vaccination clinic targeting different organ transplantation in a transplantation center in Denmark. The study found a low proportion of documented recommended vaccinations before transplantation, with higher serological protection against measles, mumps, or rubella. Most candidates required multiple vaccinations, including some needing live attenuated vaccines.

Summary: The aim of this study was to characterize and follow patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) at high bleeding risk (HBR) according to the predicting bleeding complications in patients undergoing stent implantation and subsequent dual antiplatelet therapy (PRECISE-DAPT) score, and to examine the use of P2Y12 inhibitors and the subsequent risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and bleeding. The results showed that one-third of PCI-treated all-comer patients with STEMI were at HBR according to the PRECISE-DAPT score and were more often treated with potent P2Y12 inhibitors instead of clopidogrel. The risk of MACE was lower in ticagrelor- and prasugrel-treated patients than in clopidogrel-treated patients without differences in major bleeding.

Summary: This observational cohort study found that a lower respiratory tract culture positive for S. maltophilia in COPD patients was associated with significantly increased mortality and hospitalisation for exacerbation of COPD.
