Summary: Selenium is an essential trace element for human health, but a balanced intake is crucial for maximizing its health benefits. High selenium intake above physiological levels may increase diabetes risk and result in endothelial dysfunction. Selenium induces cancer cell apoptosis via endoplasmic reticulum stress, but its role in endothelial dysfunction remains unknown.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of DLM on quail cerebrum neurons and found that DLM exposure induced histological changes, oxidative stress, and neurons apoptosis in quail cerebrum tissues. Furthermore, the study showed that DLM exposure also increased the expression of ER stress-related mRNA and decreased ATP content in quail cerebrum tissues, indicating ER stress and mitochondrial dysfunction as possible mechanisms for DLM-induced apoptosis of quail cerebrum neurons.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the protective effect of quercetin (Que) on cadmium (Cd)-induced hepatotoxicity. Through in vivo and in vitro experiments using rat models, the researchers found that Cd caused liver injury and cell apoptosis, and activated endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) signaling pathways. However, Que was able to improve hepatocyte vitality, reduce liver damage and oxidative stress caused by Cd.

Summary: This study found that PFOA leads to damage and apoptosis of pancreatic beta cells, resulting in reduced insulin secretion. The increased expression of ER stress-related genes, particularly Trib3, contributes to this process. Inhibiting Trib3 expression can protect beta cells from PFOA-induced damage and apoptosis by alleviating ER stress.

Summary: Left atrial (LA) function is crucial in predicting cardiovascular events, and post-ablation LA function influences the recurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF). Reduced post-ablation LA emptying fraction may be associated with AF recurrence, with predictors being low pre-ablation LA function, high pre-ablation LA volume, low body mass index, and female sex. Additional ablation sessions and extra-pulmonary vein LA ablation may also contribute to reduced LA function post-ablation.

Summary: Canagliflozin, a SGLT2 inhibitor, was found to provide sustained glucose-lowering effects in patients with type 2 diabetes during a 3-year post-marketing surveillance in Japan. Adverse drug reactions mainly included volume depletion and infections, with higher frequencies in elderly and patients with renal impairment. The drug showed improvements in HbA1c, with no new safety concerns observed beyond the information in the package insert.

Summary: This study investigated the antithrombotic therapy and thrombotic and hemorrhagic event rates in Japanese patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and bioprosthetic valve (BPV) replacement. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the risk of major bleeding and stroke or systemic embolism between patients treated with direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) and those treated with warfarin. Therefore, DOACs could be considered as an alternative to warfarin in this patient population.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum chloride level and clinical outcomes in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF). The study found that serum chloride level was significantly associated with right ventricular systolic dysfunction at discharge, and it was independently associated with all-cause mortality after adjusting for major confounders. The results suggest that serum chloride level is a useful predictor of poor outcomes in HFpEF patients.

Summary: This study analyzed the association between preoperative clinical factors and valve stenosis after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (HD). The results showed that low serum magnesium levels were associated with an increase in aortic transvalvular pressure gradient after TAVI. This suggests that hypomagnesemia could predict post-TAVI valve dysfunction in HD patients.

Summary: This study found that blood urea nitrogen (BUN) has an important impact on the prognosis of patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Regardless of renal function, the level of BUN is associated with the risk of HF readmission and all-cause death. In addition, BUN level is also correlated with left atrial function in HFpEF patients.
