Summary: This systematic review aimed to determine the comorbid dry eye (DE) and allergic conjunctivitis (AC) prevalence. The results showed that the incidence of AC among individuals with DE ranged from 6.2% to 38.0%, while the incidence of DE among individuals with AC ranged from 0.9% to 97.5%. Furthermore, the meta-analysis revealed that approximately 47.2% of patients with AC had comorbid DE, and approximately 17.8% of patients with DE had comorbid AC. Therefore, complementary screening and treatment for patients with DE and AC may play a significant role in preventing chronic ocular damage and improving long-term outcomes.

Summary: This study investigated the morphological and functional changes of meibomian glands in pediatric and adult patients with allergic conjunctivitis. The results showed that meibomian glands in pediatric patients improved after treatment, while there was no improvement in adult patients. Age and baseline meibomian gland area ratio were predictors of improvement in meibomian glands.

Summary: This study investigated the association between keratoconus (KC) and allergic eye diseases, eye rubbing, and atopy. The results showed a significant association between KC and eye rubbing, family history, and allergies, but not with allergic eye disease, atopy, asthma, and allergic rhinitis.

Summary: This study assessed the prevalence of dry eye in different subsets of allergic conjunctivitis (AC) patients and found that the prevalence ranged between 31% and 36%. The study concluded that perennial allergic conjunctivitis (PAC) had the highest percentage of dry eye, followed by seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC), and VKC had the lowest percentage.

Summary: Allergic eye diseases, especially vernal keratoconjunctivitis, have become a major concern worldwide, particularly in the paediatric population. The use of mesenchymal stem cells or their secreted products shows potential in alleviating inflammation and promoting repair of the damaged ocular surface in allergic conjunctivitis patients, with reduced side effects compared to current treatments.

Summary: This study found that short-term exposure to PM2.5, PM10, CO, and NO2 was associated with increased emergency room visits for total eye diseases and conjunctivitis. The study also observed stronger effects in different temperature groups, highlighting the importance of controlling air pollutants on days with varying temperatures.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive updated revision of the most relevant biomarkers for dry eye and ocular allergy, emphasizing quantitative analyses and correlations with clinical parameter data. Common biomarkers for ocular surface diseases reflect important physiological processes, including interleukin proteins related to inflammatory mechanisms and changes in mucin levels in the tear film mucous layer.

Summary: This study found a significant proportion of positive conjunctival swab cultures in preterm infants, with distinct patient characteristics and treatment compared to negative cultures. While the incidence of late-onset sepsis (LOS) was not significantly different between the two groups, some patients with positive cultures exhibited bacteremia with the same organism found in their conjunctival swab cultures, suggesting a possible connection between conjunctival or respiratory colonization and bacteremia.

Summary: In this study, the differences in conjunctival sac microbiome composition between allergic conjunctivitis (AC) patients and normal controls (NCs) were investigated using high-throughput 16S rDNA sequencing metagenomic analysis. The results showed that there was no significant difference in alpha diversity between the two groups, but the Shannon index was higher in the AC group. Beta diversity analysis revealed divergent microbiome composition in different groups. The top five abundant genera were distinct between the AC and NC groups, and the Bacillus/Acinetobacter ratio was higher in the AC group.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic initially caused anxiety among eye care professionals due to the close proximity involved in patient care. Despite efforts to clarify modes of transmission and methods of protection, a significant number of ECPs still refrained from examining patients, which may have severe health and economic consequences.

Summary: This article reviews the application of neurostimulation in the treatment of dry eye disease (DED) and the neuroanatomy and physiology behind it. Neurostimulation is a unique approach that increases the production of tear components by stimulating the nerves responsible for tear production. Clinical studies have shown that neurostimulation improves the signs and symptoms of DED by increasing basal tear production and tear volume.

Summary: This study compared the early postoperative impact of LASIK and PRK on optical quality and stability of functional vision. Results showed no significant differences between the two techniques at three months after surgery. However, a significant drop in all parameters was observed one month after PRK, with only the OSI and VBUT remaining altered at three months follow-up. Age, ablation depth, and postoperative spherical equivalent did not correlate with changes in optical and visual quality parameters. The stability and quality of retinal images were similar between LASIK and PRK at three months postoperatively.

Summary: This case report demonstrates the efficacy of an asymmetric peripheral design scleral contact lens in correcting highly irregular corneal-scleral patterns resulting from trauma. It is the first published case to use this lens design to correct a post-trauma irregular corneal-scleral relationship. Quadrant asymmetric periphery scleral contact lenses may be effective in cases of severe irregular corneal-scleral patterns.
