Purpose of review Chemokines are a large group of low molecular weight cytokines that attract and activate leukocytes throughout the body and therefore have a key role in the framework of late-phase allergic responses. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the main chemokines involved in allergic conjunctivitis, their primary functions and their physiological roles, and therapies targeted at chemokines and their receptors for ocular allergic diseases. Recent findings In recent years, there have been considerable advances in the understanding of ocular pathophysiology of ocular surface inflammatory diseases including both allergic eye diseases and dry eye syndrome. Several therapies being developed for dry eye inflammation are recognized as possible therapies for ocular allergic diseases as there are often common chemokines involved in both disease spectra. Chemokines represent an integral part of the late-phase cascade of ocular allergic inflammation. A deep understanding of specific chemokines and their interactions will help in targeting therapies to effectively manage ocular clinical findings and symptoms of allergic eye disease.

Eye care professionals' patient care and personal protective equipment adapts during the second wave of SARS-CoV-2: Survey in Israel

Nir Erdinest, Naomi London

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic initially caused anxiety among eye care professionals due to the close proximity involved in patient care. Despite efforts to clarify modes of transmission and methods of protection, a significant number of ECPs still refrained from examining patients, which may have severe health and economic consequences.

Decreased effectiveness of 0.01% atropine treatment for myopia control during prolonged COVID-19 lockdowns

Nir Erdinest, Naomi London, Nadav Levinger, Itay Lavy, Eran Pras, Yair Morad

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on children with myopia in Israel, causing their condition to worsen during the lockdown period. This study highlights the importance of considering multiple factors in myopia control, even in individuals undergoing effective treatment.

Neurostimulation for dry eye disease

Nir Erdinest, Shirley Pincovich, Naomi London, Abraham Solomon

Summary: This article reviews the application of neurostimulation in the treatment of dry eye disease (DED) and the neuroanatomy and physiology behind it. Neurostimulation is a unique approach that increases the production of tear components by stimulating the nerves responsible for tear production. Clinical studies have shown that neurostimulation improves the signs and symptoms of DED by increasing basal tear production and tear volume.

Repeated Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Astigmatic Keratotomies in Post-Keratoplasty Eyes

Nadav Levinger, Shmuel Levinger, Nir Erdinest, Asaf Achiron, Naomi London, Omer Trivizki, Eliya Levinger, Irina S. Barequet

Summary: This study evaluated the outcomes of patients who underwent two consecutive FLAK procedures to correct post-keratoplasty residual astigmatism. The results showed that repeated FLAK procedures achieved a significant and stable reduction of astigmatism in post-keratoplasty eyes, demonstrating safety and effectiveness in these complex eyes.

The Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) Wave Maneuver

Itay Lavy, Nir Erdinest, Ayala Katzir, Naomi London, Eleanor Ngwe Nche, David Smadja

Summary: A novel technique for handling and centration of DMEK grafts is presented, which can reduce surgery time and endothelial cell loss. The technique was successfully used in 27 cases with complex ocular pathology, resulting in improved visual acuity and decreased central corneal thickness post-operatively.

Early Impact of Laser Vision Correction (LVC) on the Stability and Quality of the Retinal Image

David Smadja, Nir Erdinest, Denise Wajnsztajn, Yishay Weill, Adi Abulafia, David Zadok, Itay Lavy

Summary: This study compared the early postoperative impact of LASIK and PRK on optical quality and stability of functional vision. Results showed no significant differences between the two techniques at three months after surgery. However, a significant drop in all parameters was observed one month after PRK, with only the OSI and VBUT remaining altered at three months follow-up. Age, ablation depth, and postoperative spherical equivalent did not correlate with changes in optical and visual quality parameters. The stability and quality of retinal images were similar between LASIK and PRK at three months postoperatively.

Myopia management -A survey of optometrists and ophthalmologists in Israel

Nir Erdinest, Naomi London, Yair Morad, Shehzad A. Naroo

Summary: This study evaluated the approach and standard of myopia management among eye-care practitioners (ECPs) in Israel. The study found that ophthalmologists and optometrists agree on the principles, importance, and timeline of intervention with myopia management, but differ in management methods.

Quadrant Asymmetric Design Contact Lens for Visual Rehabilitation after Eye Trauma

Nir Erdinest, Ortal Palatchi Sabag, Naomi London, Abraham Solomon

Summary: This case report demonstrates the efficacy of an asymmetric peripheral design scleral contact lens in correcting highly irregular corneal-scleral patterns resulting from trauma. It is the first published case to use this lens design to correct a post-trauma irregular corneal-scleral relationship. Quadrant asymmetric periphery scleral contact lenses may be effective in cases of severe irregular corneal-scleral patterns.
