Summary: This study systematically investigated the effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) on the phototransformation of phosphite in aquatic environments and found that photogenerated reactive oxygen species played a significant role in the transformation process. The study also explored the influencing factors and identified the composition of the reaction products.

Summary: Heavy metal stress, particularly lead stress, negatively affects the growth, physiology, and yield of plants. However, the combined application of zinc oxide nanoparticles (50 mg L-1) and nano-hydroxyapatite (50 mg kg(-1)) can alleviate the adverse effects of lead stress and improve the growth and yield of maize. The combined treatment also enhanced the uptake of nutrients and reduced the uptake of lead in plants.

Summary: Chromium contamination of soil and water poses serious threats to agricultural crop production. MicroRNAs play pivotal roles in plant growth, development, and stress responses. Through deep sequencing, this study identified differentially expressed miRNAs and their target genes in maize roots under Cr(VI) stress, providing new insights into the regulatory network involved in the adaptive responses of maize seedlings to Cr(VI) stress.

Summary: Our study on cold tolerant maize inbred lines identified numerous up-regulated transcripts under cold stress, including those involved in reactive oxygen species metabolism and heat response. Eight genes exhibited specific differential alternative splicing in the cold tolerant line, mainly related to amine metabolism. Additionally, a total of 1,111 lncRNAs were identified, with 62 of them up-regulated under cold stress in both inbred lines, enriched in protein phosphorylation.

Summary: This study suggests that bacteria may utilize small non-protein coding RNAs to maintain dormancy status during non-proliferating state, showing enriched sRNAs in the stationary growth phase and their origin from various genomic regions. Experimental validation of growth phase-dependent expression of these sRNAs provides important clues for understanding bacterial stationary phase biology.

Summary: The Ag-ZnO/cellulose nanocomposites with tunable structure and properties were fabricated for degrading MO dye. By adjusting the cellulose fiber size, the morphology of ZnO was controlled, resulting in enhanced photocatalytic activities and recovery efficiency. This approach provides a novel method for improving the performance of Ag-ZnO/cellulose nanocomposites.

Summary: Bimetallic PdCu/MWCNT and PdNi/MWCNT nanoparticles were synthesized and characterized, with PdCu/MWCNT nanoparticles showing greater ecotoxic effects on earthworms compared to PdNi/MWCNT nanoparticles. The PdCu/MWCNT nanoparticles reduced survival rates, caused malformations, and induced histopathological changes in earthworm tissues, while the PdNi/MWCNT nanoparticles had minimal effects. Both types of nanoparticles increased ROS levels and 8-OHdG activity in earthworm tissues, suggesting a potential toxicological risk at high concentrations.

Summary: This study evaluated the influence of surface coatings on the uptake of nano-fertilizers by crops, their phytotoxicity, and the health risk to Chinese adults. It was found that the coatings played a significant role in the migration efficiency of nanoparticles and their phytotoxicity. Additionally, the study highlighted potential health risks associated with the consumption of crops fertilized with CuO NPs.

Summary: The study found that undissociated TiO2 NPs and SiO2 NPs had weaker toxicity to Daphnia pulex, primarily exerting their toxic effects by promoting molting and improving energy metabolism. In contrast, dissociated ZnO NPs mainly caused toxicity by releasing Zn ions, inhibiting molting and gene expressions. The results suggest that the toxic mechanisms of dissociated NPs differ from undissociated NPs.

Summary: This study analyzed the differential expression of miRNAs and mRNAs in untransformed and RNAi transgenic bananas at the third ripening stage. Five significantly differentially expressed miRNAs were identified, and their predicted target genes were mainly enriched in several pathways. The results indicate that ethylene biosynthesis is associated with miRNAs regulating the expression of sulfur metabolism-related genes in bananas.

Summary: This study presents a method named "from nano to nano" for the controlled deposition of zinc oxide nanoparticles (NPs) locally on surfaces. The approach involves increasing the ionic strength by generating a flux of AuCl4- ions in a zinc oxide nanoparticle dispersion using scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). The as-electrodeposited zinc oxide NPs form patterns on a biased indium tin oxide (ITO) surface embedded in gold. These patterns can be used as recyclable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active substrates for sensitive detection of dyes.
