Summary: During the pandemic, foot traffic in cities on the West and East Coasts of the United States decreased while middle American cities saw an increase in movements, particularly to grocery stores and parks. Additionally, it was found that the poorest communities reduced fewer movements compared to the wealthiest communities, except when it came to trips to parks.

Summary: This study investigated the incidence rate and potential factors affecting postextubation dysphagia (PED) in patients with COVID-19. The results showed that the incidence rate of PED in COVID-19 patients was 66.5%. Age was identified as a potential influencing factor. Therefore, in the era of COVID-19, clinicians need to identify risk factors in intubated patients earlier and strengthen PED care programs.

Summary: The study retrospectively analyzed intubation procedures for adult COVID-19 patients at Montefiore Medical Center, comparing techniques, success rates, and complications with intubations performed on critically ill patients before the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite higher first-pass success rates during the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a higher incidence of associated complications, possibly due to increased use of video laryngoscopy and neuromuscular blocking agents.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on businesses and their supply chains, particularly in terms of sustainability challenges. Although several studies have discussed the effects of the pandemic on supply chains, there is a research gap in analyzing sustainability challenges in a specific context. This study aims to identify and analyze COVID-19-related sustainability challenges in the Australian food processing sector using a mix of qualitative and quantitative techniques. An online survey and the Best-Worst method were employed, resulting in the identification of 22 sustainability challenges categorized into economic, environmental, social and ethical, and operational challenges. The top five sustainability challenges identified were increased food processing cost, lack of transparency and traceability, increase in price of raw materials, lack of capital and physical resources, and spread of fake information.

Summary: Different phenotypes have been identified in COVID-19 patients with moderate to severe ARDS, with one phenotype characterized by older patients with comorbidities, rapid disease progression, and poor prognosis. Further investigation is needed to determine appropriate treatments and ventilatory strategies for each phenotype.

Summary: In February 2021, a new Ebola outbreak occurred in Guinea amid the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to increased burden on the local healthcare system. Public health organizations and African health organizations have redeployed technical committees and mitigation mechanisms used during the 2014-2016 Ebola epidemics, emphasizing the need to reactivate previous strategies and consider new measures.

Summary: During the initial stage of the COVID-19 outbreak, residents in Hubei reported poorer mental health compared to those in other regions, but perceived behavioral control and maintaining a healthy lifestyle are associated with better mental health across all regions. Residents with higher income are more likely to undertake preventive measures, highlighting the necessity to address health disparities in preventing the highly contagious novel disease.

Summary: This study analyzed the occurrence, risk factors, and clinical outcomes of bleeding complications in patients supported with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The results showed that 18.1% of ECMO patients in the Chinese Society of Extracorporeal Life Support (CSECLS) registry experienced bleeding complications, which were associated with higher in-hospital mortality, especially in patients who received extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR), patients on circulatory support, and pediatric patients.

Summary: This study found that under hypoxic and inflammatory conditions, the transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) secreted by mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can regulate the Treg/Th17 skewing induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and hypoxia by inhibiting the expression of miR-155. These findings provide evidence for future T lymphocyte-targeted cell therapy in specific conditions.

Summary: In this study, the potential of Xuebijing treatment against bacterial infection and the underlying mechanisms were investigated using Caenorhabditis elegans as an animal model. The results showed that Xuebijing could inhibit the reduction of lifespan caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection by inhibiting colonization of the bacteria in the intestinal lumen. Xuebijing treatment also suppressed the increase in antimicrobial gene expression induced by Pseudomonas infection.

Summary: Transplantation surgery has benefited from advances in technique and technology, particularly in the use of regional anesthesia to provide analgesia and reduce opioid use. However, standardized practices for regional anesthesia in transplantation surgery are lacking, and no formal guidelines exist. To address this, a task force reviewed available literature and found that regional anesthesia is effective in controlling postoperative pain after transplantation surgeries. Part 1 of their review focuses on thoracic transplantation surgeries, while part 2 covers abdominal transplantations.

Summary: This study investigated hospital-acquired bloodstream infections (HA-BSI) in 2600 adult patients from 333 ICUs in 52 countries. HA-BSI were frequently caused by Gram-negative, carbapenem-resistant, and difficult-to-treat pathogens. Antimicrobial resistance led to delays in adequate antimicrobial therapy, resulting in high mortality rates.
