Summary: There is evidence that the atherosclerotic process leading to cardiovascular disease (CVD) starts at a young age. Even at normal levels, exposure to low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and other cardiovascular risk factors increases the prevalence of early atherosclerosis and the risk of future cardiovascular events. The PRECAD trial aims to evaluate the potential benefits of aggressively controlling cardiovascular risk factors in otherwise healthy young adults (<40 years) to prevent the onset or progression of atherosclerosis. The primary endpoint is the change in total atherosclerosis burden.

Summary: This study aims to compare tonometric radial artery blood pressure (BP) measurements during passive head-up tilt with ambulatory BP recordings and evaluate possible laboratory cutoff values for hypertension. The results showed that laboratory BP measurements had slightly higher systolic pressure and lower diastolic pressure compared to ambulatory BP. The laboratory cutoff of 136/82 mmHg classified 76% of subjects correctly as normotensive or hypertensive. The remaining 24% of discordant results may be attributed to white-coat or masked hypertension, or higher physical activity during out-of-office recordings.

The results showed that individuals with higher waist:height ratios had higher blood pressure, systemic vascular resistance, and arterial stiffness. These findings suggest that obesity-related hypertension has similar characteristics to primary hypertension.

Summary: Through meta-analysis of epigenome-wide association studies, we found significant associations between dietary and supplemental intake of vitamins C and E with DNA methylation. Vitamin C intake was associated with 4,656 CpG sites, while vitamin E intake was associated with 160 CpG sites. Vitamin C intake was found to be related to systems development and the immune response, while no significant associations were found for vitamin E intake with any biological pathways investigated.

Summary: This study identifies new genetic variants associated with resting heart rate (RHR) and demonstrates that higher genetically predicted RHR is associated with a decreased risk of atrial fibrillation and ischemic stroke. Genome-wide analysis reveals multiple genetic variants in cardiomyocyte-related genes and provides insights into their electrocardiogram (ECG) signature. Mendelian randomization analyses indicate that higher genetically predicted RHR increases the risk of dilated cardiomyopathy, but reduces the risk of atrial fibrillation, ischemic stroke, and cardio-embolic stroke.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the risk factors for ischemic stroke (IS) after acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Based on a retrospective registry study of 8049 ACS patients, it was found that previous stroke, atrial fibrillation or flutter, and heart failure indicated by the Killip classification were the most significant risk factors for both early-onset and late-onset IS. Left ventricular ejection fraction and coronary artery disease severity were important risk factors for early-onset IS, while age and peripheral artery disease were important risk factors for late-onset IS. The CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc score and its components were strong predictors for both early-onset and late-onset IS.
