Cancer-related Fatigue in Breast Cancer Survivors: A Review

Ana Ruiz-Casado, Alejandro Alvarez-Bustos, Cristina G. de Pedro, Marta Mendez-Otero, Maria Romero-Elias

Summary: Fatigue is a common and serious symptom in breast cancer survivors after treatment, affecting younger, obese, and diabetic women more severely. Fatigue is closely related to symptoms such as pain, depression, insomnia, and cognitive dysfunction. Awareness and management of fatigue are crucial as it significantly impacts the quality of life of survivors.

Summary: This study aimed to identify potential correlates of cancer-related fatigue after curative breast cancer treatment, and found some factors that may be associated with fatigue. The results showed that weight, resting and recovery heart rate were positively associated with fatigue, while age and time from diagnosis were negatively associated. However, previous therapies, objectively assessed weekly physical activity, cardiorespiratory condition, muscular strength, and adherence to Mediterranean diet were not associated with CRF.

Changes in Health Behaviors, Mental and Physical Health among Older Adults under Severe Lockdown Restrictions during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Spain

Esther Garcia-Esquinas, Rosario Ortola, Iago Gine-Vazquez, Jose A. Carnicero, Asier Manas, Elvira Lara, Alejandro Alvarez-Bustos, German Vicente-Rodriguez, Mercedes Sotos-Prieto, Beatriz Olaya, Francisco Jose Garcia-Garcia, Narcis Gusi, Jose R. Banegas, Irene Rodriguez-Gomez, Ellen A. Struijk, David Martinez-Gomez, Alberto Lana, Josep Maria Haro, Jose Luis Ayuso-Mateos, Leocadio Rodriguez-Manas, Ignacio Ara, Marta Miret, Fernando Rodriguez-Artalejo

Summary: The study found that during the COVID-19 lockdown, older adults, especially males with greater social isolation, sub-optimal housing conditions, and chronic morbidities, were more likely to develop unhealthy lifestyles or experience declines in mental health. However, older adults who previously maintained a healthy diet and engaged in more physical activity were protected from developing unhealthy lifestyles during the lockdown.

Effects of Vivifrail multicomponent intervention on functional capacity: a multicentre, randomized controlled trial

Alvaro Casas-Herrero, Mikel L. Saez de Asteasu, Ivan Anton-Rodrigo, Juan Luis Sanchez-Sanchez, Manuel Montero-Odasso, Itxaso Marin-Epelde, Fernanda Ramon-Espinoza, Fabricio Zambom-Ferraresi, Roberto Petidier-Torregrosa, Jaione Elexpuru-Estomba, Alejandro Alvarez-Bustos, Arkaitz Galbete, Nicolas Martinez-Velilla, Mikel Izquierdo

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of the Vivifrail exercise intervention on functional capacity, cognitive function, and well-being status in community-dwelling older adults. The results showed that the Vivifrail exercise programme provided significant benefits in functional capacity, as well as improvements in cognitive function, muscle function, and mood status.

Associations between frailty trajectories and frailty status and adverse outcomes in community-dwelling older adults

Alejandro Alvarez-Bustos, Jose Antonio Carnicero-Carreno, Juan Luis Sanchez-Sanchez, Francisco Javier Garcia-Garcia, Cristina Alonso-Bouzon, Leocadio Rodriguez-Manas

Summary: By examining and analyzing the evolution of different frailty trajectories, it was found that prospective increases in frailty levels among older adults are associated with an increased risk of adverse events.

Differential Association of Frailty and Sarcopenia With Mortality and Disability: Insight Supporting Clinical Subtypes of Frailty

Betty Davies, Stefan Walter, Angel Rodriguez-Laso, Jose Antonio Carnicero Carreno, Francisco Jose Garcia-Garcia, Alejandro Alvarez-Bustos, Leocadio Rodriguez-Manas

Summary: Sarcopenia plays a relevant role in the increased risk of functional impairment associated with frailty, but it may not significantly affect mortality. Both sarcopenia and frailty need to be present to predict worsening of disability.

Summary: A multicomponent intervention reduces the risk of mobility disability in older adults with physical frailty and sarcopenia (SPPB scores of 3-7), and improves physical performance, muscle strength, and appendicular lean mass.

Effect of Physical Activity/Exercise on Oxidative Stress and Inflammation in Muscle and Vascular Aging

Mariam El Assar, Alejandro Alvarez-Bustos, Patricia Sosa, Javier Angulo, Leocadio Rodriguez-Manas

Summary: Functional status is crucial for healthy aging, and impairment in skeletal muscle and the cardiovascular system can compromise this status. Increased oxidative stress and inflammation contribute to functional decline in aging individuals. Physical activity and exercise training have positive effects on skeletal muscle and cardiovascular health in older adults.

Role of sarcopenia in the frailty transitions in older adults: a population-based cohort study

Alejandro Alvarez-Bustos, Jose Antonio Carnicero-Carreno, Betty Davies, Francisco Javier Garcia-Garcia, Fernando Rodriguez-Artalejo, Leocadio Rodriguez-Manas, Cristina Alonso-Bouzon

Summary: Frailty and sarcopenia are age-associated syndromes that are often linked to functional decline and mortality. This study examined the role of sarcopenia in modulating transitions within frailty status, finding that sarcopenia impacted frailty transitions but did not affect the risk of death associated with frailty.

Physical performance measures in frailty screening: diagnostic and prognostic accuracy in the Toledo Study of Healthy Ageing

Juan Luis Sanchez-Sanchez, Jose Antonio Carnicero-Carreno, Francisco Jose Garcia-Garcia, Alejandro Alvarez-Bustos, Beatriz Rodriguez-Sanchez, Leocadio Rodriguez-Manas

Summary: The present study aimed to explore the diagnostic and prognostic accuracy of standard and population-specific Physical Performance Measures (PPMs) cut-off points for frailty screening. The results showed that population-specific cut-off points outperformed existing reference thresholds in terms of diagnostic accuracy. Frailty identified through PPMs was associated with adverse events similarly to other frailty tools and showed similar prognostic accuracy.
