West Nile Virus-Associated Hospitalizations, California, 2004-2017

Robert E. Snyder, Gail Sondermeyer Cooksey, Vicki Kramer, Seema Jain, Duc J. Vugia

Summary: WNV-associated hospitalizations in California were substantial and costly, with higher incidence in males, elderly persons, and patients with underlying conditions. WNV remains a costly and severe public health threat in California.

Racial/Ethnic Disparities In COVID-19 Exposure Risk, Testing, And Cases At The Subcounty Level In California

Marissa B. Reitsma, Anneke L. Claypool, Jason Vargo, Priya B. Shete, Ryan McCorvie, William H. Wheeler, David A. Rocha, Jennifer F. Myers, Erin L. Murray, Brooke Bregman, Deniz M. Dominguez, Alyssa D. Nguyen, Charsey Porse, Curtis L. Fritz, Seema Jain, James P. Watt, Joshua A. Salomon, Jeremy D. Goldhaber-Fiebert

Summary: Research in California has shown that Latino populations are more likely than other racial/ethnic minorities to live in high-exposure-risk households, have higher cumulative cases, and lower testing rates. Subcounty disparity analyses can help inform targeted interventions, such as community testing and vaccine access measures, to address these disparities.

Prevention of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) by mRNA-Based Vaccines Within the General Population of California

Kristin L. Andrejko, Jake Pry, Jennifer F. Myers, Nicholas P. Jewell, John Openshaw, James Watt, Seema Jain, Joseph A. Lewnard

Summary: Vaccination with mRNA-based vaccines in California has shown to effectively prevent documented SARS-CoV-2 infections, with similar effectiveness for BNT126b2 and mRNA-1273. However, vaccine hesitancy poses a challenge in achieving the necessary coverage levels for herd immunity.

Characterizing Areas with Increased Burden of West Nile Virus Disease in California, 2009-2018

Mary E. Danforth, Marc Fischer, Robert E. Snyder, Nicole P. Lindsey, Stacey W. Martin, Vicki L. Kramer

Summary: This study identified eleven high-burden ZIP code areas in nine counties within southern California and California's Central Valley, despite these areas only making up 2% of California's area and 17% of the state's population. These high-burden ZIP codes accounted for 44% of reported WNV cases and had a mean annual incidence that was 2.4 times the annual state incidence. Focusing mosquito control and public education efforts in these areas could significantly reduce the burden of WNV disease.

Disparities in COVID-19 fatalities among working Californians

Kristin J. Cummings, John Beckman, Matthew Frederick, Robert Harrison, Alyssa Nguyen, Robert Snyder, Elena Chan, Kathryn Gibb, Andrea Rodriguez, Jessie Wong, Erin L. Murray, Seema Jain, Ximena Vergara

Summary: This study aimed to describe COVID-19 mortality among working Californians in 2020 and provide preventive strategies. The findings showed that out of the total fatalities among individuals aged 18-64, 9.9% were attributed to COVID-19. The majority of confirmed and likely working COVID-19 decedents were male, Latino, and foreign-born with lower education levels. Certain occupational groups, such as farming, material moving, construction, production, and transportation, had higher COVID-19 mortality rates compared to the overall rate. Additionally, mortality rates were significantly higher for male, Latino, and Black workers compared to their counterparts.

Kristin L. Andrejko, Jennifer F. Myers, John Openshaw, Nozomi Fukui, Sophia Li, James P. Watt, Erin L. Murray, Cora Hoover, Joseph A. Lewnard, Seema Jain, Jake M. Pry

Summary: Despite lower circulation of influenza virus during the COVID-19 pandemic, seasonal influenza vaccination remains important. The relationship between COVID-19 vaccination and influenza vaccination is not well understood.

Kristin L. Andrejko, Jennifer F. Myers, Nozomi Fukui, Lauren Nelson, Rui Zhao, John Openshaw, James P. Watt, Seema Jain, Joseph A. Lewnard, Jake M. Pry

Summary: COVID-19 vaccination uptake is still suboptimal in the United States and other settings. The association between vaccine intention and uptake is not fully understood. This study aimed to describe predictors of vaccine uptake and evaluate the accuracy of self-reported COVID-19 vaccine status compared to a statewide vaccine registry.
