Summary: Urban excavation is a crucial process for various construction activities, but the complexity of underground utilities in urban areas poses safety risks. Digital twin (DT) has the potential to enhance urban excavation safety (UES) by providing real-time excavation information and high-fidelity simulation. This research develops a DT for urban excavation, integrating a multisensory solution for precise estimation of excavator poses, a dynamic virtual model using building information and 3D excavator models, and a real-time safety control method for proactive monitoring and risk assessment. A system prototype was successfully applied in a case study, demonstrating improved excavation accuracy and collision avoidance.
