Global grain production needs a significant increase in output in the coming decades in order to cover the food and feed consumption needs of mankind. As sustainability is the key factor in production, the authors investigate global grain production, the losses along the value chain, and future solutions. Global wheat, maize, rice, and soybean production peaked at 2.102 million tons (mt) of harvested grain in 2018. Pre-harvest losses due to diseases, animal pests, weeds, and abiotic stresses and harvest destroy yearly amount to about 35% of the total possible biological product of 3.153 mt, with 1051.5 mt being lost before harvest. The losses during harvest and storage through toxin contamination are responsible for 690 mt, with a total of 1.741 mt or 83% of the total newly stored grain. Limited cooperation can be experienced between scientific research, plant breeding, plant protection, agronomy, and society, and in addition, their interdependence is badly understood. Plant breeding can help to reduce a significant part of field loss up to 300 mt (diseases, toxins, water and heat stress) and up to 220 mt during storage (toxin contamination). The direct and indirect impact of pest management on production lead to huge grain losses. The main task is to reduce grain losses during production and storage and consumption. Better harvest and storage conditions could prevent losses of 420 mt. The education of farmers by adopting the vocational school system is a key issue in the prevention of grain loss. In addition, extension services should be created to demonstrate farmers crop management in practice. A 50% reduction of grain loss and waste along the value chain seems to be achievable for the feeding 3-4 billion more people in a sustainable way without raising genetic yields of crop cultivars.

Modeling consumer's innovativeness and purchase intention relationship regarding 5G technology in China

Sayed Kifayat Shah, Zhongjun Tang, Beata Gavurova, Judit Olah, Angel Acevedo-Duque

Summary: This study analyzed the data of 341 Chinese consumers to explore the relationship between consumer innovativeness and determinants such as visibility and guidance affordances, environmental awareness, and safety concerns. The results show that visibility and guidance affordances encourage consumer innovativeness, and environmental awareness and product safety concerns mediate the relationship between consumer innovativeness and purchase intention. This model improves predictive ability over previous models and provides valuable insights for managers and policy-makers.

Institutional distance and Chinese investment efficiency in Africa: a stochastic frontier analysis

Elyas Abdulahi Mohamued, Muhammad Asif Khan, Natanya Meyer, Jozsef Popp, Judit Olah

Summary: This study examines the efficiency effects of institutional distance on Chinese outward foreign direct investment (FDI) in Africa. The findings suggest that a higher institutional distance between China and African countries can maximize the FDI flow efficiency. However, comparable institutional distance between the host and home countries has a positive impact on Chinese outward FDI, indicating the ability of Chinese multinational enterprises to invest in countries with similar institutional characteristics.

A comparative study of the policy response to COVID-19 in the ASEAN region: A dynamic simulated ARDL approach

Nihal Ahmed, Dilawar Khan, Judit Olah, Jozsef Popp

Summary: The COVID-19 epidemic is a significant global health disaster and poses the greatest challenge to humanity since World War II. This study analyzes the effectiveness of measures implemented in the ASEAN region to control the spread of COVID-19 using a dynamic simulated ARDL approach. The results show that government economic support and debt/contract relief for poor families are crucial in fighting against COVID-19. Other important measures include closing schools and workplaces, restrictions on gatherings and travel, and public awareness campaigns, testing policies, and social distancing.

Technological innovation, natural resources, financial inclusion, and environmental degradation in BRI economies

Kishwar Ali, Du Jianguo, Dervis Kirikkaleli, Zoltan Bacs, Judit Olah

Summary: This research investigates the relationship between financial inclusion (FNI), technological innovation (TIN), natural resources (NRS), and environmental degradation in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) region. Using various econometric techniques, the study finds that NRS and FNI contribute to higher carbon and ecological footprints, while TIN, economic governance institutions, and human capital help mitigate environmental degradation and promote sustainability. The findings have important implications for policymakers and central authorities in the BRI region.

The Impact of Water Resources Tax Policy on Water Saving Behavior

Lei Wang, Muniba, Zoltan Lakner, Jozsef Popp

Summary: The Chinese water administration department has explored regulatory and market-oriented water control policies to ease water shortage and promote the idea of 'water-saving first'. Among them, implementing a water resources tax policy has been successful in achieving water-saving objectives. The research shows that a water resources tax can effectively improve water utilization efficiency, enhance water-saving awareness, and promote sustainable economic development and use of water resources.

The relationship between 5G technology affordances, consumption values, trust and intentions: An exploration using the TCV and S-O-R paradigm

Sayed Kifayat Shah, Zhongjun Tang, Judit Olah, Jozsef Popp, Angel Acevedo-Duque

Summary: The merging of 5G mobile communication technology with other sectors is expected to spark innovation and create significant ripple effects. However, there is limited understanding of users' behavioral reactions to the affordances, values, and trust generated by 5G technology. This study used the Stimulus-response theory and the consumption values theory to investigate this relationship. Data was collected from 373 consumers in China through a survey method, and the partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique was used to validate the model's suggested relationships. The findings indicate that the relationship between affordances and purchase intention is mediated by consumption values and trust. This research provides insights into the drivers and barriers influencing consumers' adoption of 5G technology and its potential impact on marketing strategies and consumer intentions.
