Blockchain implications within the sustainability domain are rapidly arousing the interest of researchers and institutions. However, despite the avalanche of articles, papers, and recently published books, innovation in the blockchain domain is still heavily influenced by light literature, such as news, articles, opinion posts, and white papers. Lacking a homogeneous literature background, case studies often fall into storytelling, providing mere descriptions of the facts according to the writers' impressions and opinions. We therefore investigate blockchain adoption for sustainable purposes through a case study while remaining firmly grounded in three main theoretical literature streams: knowledge management, knowledge infrastructure, and trust. Since blockchain interaction with the real world is managed by oracles, addressing the oracle problem is essential in order to evaluate the effectiveness of blockchain for sustainability issues. However, to the best of the authors' knowledge, no other paper has efficiently addressed this subject or even mentioned it. Recognizing its scarce consideration in the literature, the oracle problem will be analyzed in both theoretical and practical terms, thereby providing a way to solve the issues related to non-fungible products in the supply chain. Choice over the selected case study was made in light of the divergence in motives for the adoption of blockchain (economic over social), which makes the results more inferable at a broader scale and offers an insight into how sustainable innovations can also be economically viable.

Wrapping Trust for Interoperability: A Preliminary Study of Wrapped Tokens

Giulio Caldarelli

Summary: Blockchains are blind to the real world and rely on third-party oracles for external data. The implementation of oracles is controversial and brings back issues of trust and single points of failure. Blockchains also lack interoperability, preventing the flow of liquidity between different chains. Wrapped tokens are one solution to achieve interoperability, but their issuance involves considerations of trust and third-party involvement.

Organizational roles in the context of digital transformation: A micro-level perspective

Alessia Zoppelletto, Ludovico Bullini Orlandi, Alessandro Zardini, Cecilia Rossignoli, Sascha Kraus

Summary: Digital transformation at the micro level involves changes in roles, skills, leadership styles, and managerial approaches within organizations. Therefore, understanding individual attitudes and behaviors that drive digital transformation is crucial. This study examines digital transformation at the micro level by conducting a multiple-case study of 38 Italian firms, including seven large firms and 31 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), allowing for cross-case analysis. Findings suggest that approaches differ for managers in SMEs and large firms, with large firms employing a conductor approach and SMEs adopting a peer-tutor approach characterized by bottom-up, informal, persuasive, and empathic methods.

Technological orientation and organizational resilience to Covid-19: The mediating role of strategy's digital maturity

Canio Forliano, Ludovico Bullini Orlandi, Alessandro Zardini, Cecilia Rossignoli

Summary: Grounded in dynamic capabilities theory, this study examines the impact of firms' technological orientation (TO) on their resilience to the Covid-19 pandemic (RTC), taking into account the mediating role of their digital strategy maturity (MDS). The study surveyed 186 firms operating in Germany and Italy and used covariance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM) and bootstrapped regression analysis to test the hypotheses. The results suggest that TO positively affects MDS, leading to higher RTC, while the relationship between TO and RTC is not significant. The study contributes to the knowledge of dynamic capabilities theory and emphasizes the importance of developing a mature digital strategy for organizational resilience in the face of disruptive changes.

Management reforms, re-stratification and the adaptation of professional status hierarchies: The case of medicine in publicly owned hospitals

Ian Kirkpatrick, Alessandro Zardini, Gianluca Veronesi

Summary: Public management reforms have resulted in re-stratification of professions and the emergence of administrative elites. We examine this phenomenon in English publicly owned hospitals and find that the social status hierarchy of medicine has adapted to management demands. However, the establishment of a management criterion for seniority is only evident under certain conditions, supporting the status position of elite doctors.

Transformative social innovation in developing and emerging ecosystems: a configurational examination

Damiano Cortese, Chiara Civera, Cecilia Casalegno, Alessandro Zardini

Summary: This research aims to identify the characteristics that make an ecosystem a facilitator for transformative social innovation in developing and emerging countries. The study finds that stakeholder empowerment, cooperative strategic posturing, knowledge transfer, and local knowledge exchange are necessary conditions for creating local autonomy, which is crucial for transformative social innovation. The research proposes a shift from a firm-centric perspective to a participatory relational perspective, advancing fresh thinking on stakeholder and knowledge management applied to social innovation in developing and emerging contexts. Practical suggestions to address stakeholder power imbalances are also provided.

Digital entrepreneurship: The role of entrepreneurial orientation and digitalization for disruptive innovation

Sascha Kraus, Katharina Vonmetz, Ludovico Bullini Orlandi, Alessandro Zardini, Cecilia Rossignoli

Summary: Innovation is important for economic growth, and the role of disruptive innovation in promoting growth is highly regarded. This study examines the impact of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and digitalization strategy on firms' ability to develop disruptive innovation. Based on survey data from 242 firms, the results show that EO has a significant positive effect on disruptive innovation. However, highly entrepreneurially oriented firms perceive a digitalization strategy as a metaphorical cage for disruptive innovation. On the other hand, a digitalization strategy supports disruptive innovation when firms have lower entrepreneurial orientation. The findings suggest that firms should focus on EO to enable disruptive innovation and adjust digitalization strategy based on the level of EO.
