Groundwater quality deterioration has attracted world-wide concerns due to its importance for human water supply. Although more and more studies have shown that human activities and climate are changing the groundwater status, an investigation on how different groundwater heavy metals respond to human activity modes (e.g. mining, waste disposal, agriculture, sewage effluent and complex activity) in a varying climate has been lacking. Here, for each of six heavy metals (i.e. Fe, Zn, Mn, Pb, Cd and Cu) in groundwater, we use >330 data points together with mixed-effect models to indicate that (i) human activity modes significantly influence the Cu and Mn but not Zn, Fe, Pb and Cd levels, and (ii) annual mean temperature (AMT) only significantly influences Cu and Pb levels, while annual precipitation (AP) only significantly affects Fe, Cu and Mn levels. Given these differences, we suggest that the impacts of human activity modes and climate on heavy metal spread in groundwater are biased. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Summary: This study integrates water footprint theory, fuzzy chance-constrained programming, and fractional programming into a general optimization framework to seek optimal crop planting patterns for agricultural water management. The results indicate that the optimized planting pattern can reduce water footprint, improve economic water productivity, and increase trade benefit.

Impact of Climate Change on Hydrology and Hydrologic Extremes of Upper Blue Nile River Basin

Tebikachew Betru Tariku, Thian Yew Gan, Jianfeng Li, Xiaosheng Qin

Summary: This study projected the impact of climate change on the streamflow of the Upper Blue Nile River Basin, finding that future temperatures are expected to rise, with precipitation changes varying widely, leading to potential increase or decrease in streamflow. The projections suggest that the UBN may experience more frequent and severe hydrologic extremes in the future.

Investigating event-based temporal patterns of design rainfall in a tropical region

Summary: This study investigated the temporal rainfall patterns in a tropical city to facilitate rainfall design by analyzing 5-min rainfall data from three raingauge stations. The analysis employed a storm-event-based approach using the concept of inter-event time definition and rainfall depth/duration/intensity thresholds, aiming to improve the representativeness of design rainfall and facilitate rainfall-runoff modeling for urban flood control in a tropical region.

Comparison of different quantile delta mapping schemes in frequency analysis of precipitation extremes over mainland Southeast Asia under climate change

Xiaosheng Qin, Chao Dai

Summary: This study conducted a frequency analysis of precipitation indices in mainland Southeast Asia using different bias-correction schemes. The results showed an increasing trend of future extreme precipitation indices in the region. The study is valuable for understanding the spatiotemporal distribution of precipitation extremes, flood/drought risk assessment, and adaptation planning under climate change.

Summary: This study developed a nationwide system dynamics model to predict China's water carrying capacity (WCC) for the near future. The model considered different water resources conditions and development modes and revealed that population and GDP would continue to grow, wastewater discharge would rise and then decline, and the water supply-demand ratio would be greatly affected by development mode.

Summary: An integrated assessment modelling framework is used to evaluate the impact of climate change on hydro-climatic extremes in the Hanjiang River basin, China. The study finds that the basin is expected to become wetter and hotter in the future, with more intense precipitation and higher temperature extremes. The research provides valuable insights for decision makers in designing adaptation strategies to mitigate the risks from extreme water-related disasters in the future.

An integrated multi-criteria analysis framework of built reservoir with dam-heightening-based decision: China's largest water transfer programs for sustainable development

Bin Liu, Huajian Fang, Xiaosheng Qin, Feilian Zhang, Jingjing Li

Summary: An integrated multi-criteria analysis framework is proposed for sustainable water management of built reservoirs with dam-heightening-based decision. The study shows that this framework can effectively handle the decision-making problem of reservoir construction schemes and identifies subjective weighting factors. Game theory is found to be superior to traditional methods in integrating collective wisdom and objective indicators. This study is of significant reference value for the feasibility demonstration of reservoirs with water transferring tasks worldwide.

Analysis of heatwaves based on the universal thermal climate index and apparent temperature over mainland Southeast Asia

Lilingjun Liu, Xiaosheng Qin

Summary: Heatwaves have become more frequent and severe in recent decades, causing significant damage to human health, infrastructure, and economies globally. Previous studies have focused mainly on air temperature and overlooked the importance of other variables in underestimating the adverse effects of heatwaves. This study proposes the use of sophisticated thermal indices to define and assess heatwaves in mainland southeast Asia (MSEA) from 1961 to 2020, and compares the results with the traditional temperature-based method. The findings show that considering only air temperature significantly underestimates the maximum and average temperatures during heatwave days, while the thermal indices predict lower frequencies and shorter durations of yearly heatwave occurrences. Trend analysis reveals a general increase in heatwave occurrences across MSEA under all thermal indices, particularly in the last 30 years. This study provides a comprehensive view of heatwave characteristics based on thermal indices and emphasizes the risk of intensified heat stress during heatwaves in MSEA.
