Residues of environmental contaminants in food represent a concern in food safety programs. In this study, the distribution of persistent organic pollutants (POPS) were evaluated in 79 tuna samples from FAO areas 51 (Indian Ocean), 71 (Pacific Ocean), 34 (Atlantic Ocean), and 37 (Mediterranean Sea). 6 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), 16 organochlorines (OCs) and 7 polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were selected as representative compounds according to EFSA POPs monitoring guidelines. An analytical method, based on Accelerated Solvent Extraction (ASE), with an in-line clean-up step and GC-MS/MS detection, was developed, validated and applied. PCBs were detected in all FAO areas, with a prevalence of 100% for most of them. In the FAO area 37, only, all PBDEs were detected. Only 5 OCs were detected. The results showed that POPs contamination of tuna reflects FAO area contamination; in particular FAO area 37 was the most polluted. Moreover, tuna muscle was an appropriate matrix for monitoring contamination and for obtaining information about food safety. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Phthalates leaching from plastic food and pharmaceutical contact materials by FTIR and GC-MS

Tatjana Andjelkovic, Danica Bogdanovic, Ivana Kostic, Gordana Kocic, Goran Nikolic, Radmila Pavlovic

Summary: Phthalates are widely used as plasticizers in plastic food contact materials (FCMs) and pharmaceutical contact materials (PCMs). This research aimed to determine the leaching potential of phthalates from different plastic materials and quantitatively analyze the presence of 5 specific phthalates in various plastic articles. The study found that GC-MS is more effective in separating and quantifying individual phthalates, whereas FTIR is a faster and more cost-effective method for determining total phthalate content.

Summary: Fruits and vegetables are the most wasted food categories, with their waste being used in animal feed to enhance sustainability of livestock production. Analysis of fruit and vegetable waste from the Milan General Wholesale Market revealed rich nutritional value but high moisture content, necessitating the development of technologies to maintain food safety along the supply chain.

Low n-6/n-3 Gestation and Lactation Diets Influence Early Performance, Muscle and Adipose Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Content and Deposition, and Relative Abundance of Proteins in Suckling Piglets

Summary: Elevated ratios of omega-6 and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in swine diets can increase the risk of inflammatory and metabolic diseases. Lower ratios of these fatty acids have beneficial effects on sows and piglets. There is limited research on how sow nutrition directly affects protein and fat deposition in suckling piglets.

Summary: This study evaluated the antioxidant and antimicrobial capacity of different algae and cyanobacteria and found that Ascophyllum nodosum had the strongest antioxidant properties. The extracts of these species showed growth inhibition activity against porcine O138 E. coli. Furthermore, a combination of Ascophyllum nodosum and Lithotamnium calcareum enhanced their bioactivity, making them a promising alternative to antibiotics.

Summary: Mastitis is a major disease in dairy cows that affects milk quality and quantity, and increases the risk of antimicrobial residues in milk. This study aimed to estimate the risks to human health related to milk production in dairy herds in Lombardy using a One Health approach. The results showed a relatively high prevalence of contagious pathogens, but they were not associated with an increased risk of antimicrobial residues.

Summary: The objective of this research was to develop a LC-MSn method for the determination of free cortisol and its metabolites in human urine. The method was validated for accuracy, precision, linearity, and recovery. It was successfully applied to urine samples from healthy subjects and patients with cortisol-related diseases. Furthermore, the method has potential applications in antidoping control and the study of prednisolone metabolism.

Summary: Chlorates and perchlorates are endocrine disruptors and emerging environmental contaminants found in various foods. This study assessed the presence of these substances in raw bovine milk samples from Lombardy, Italy. The results showed that most samples contained chlorates and perchlorates, but there was no risk for Italian consumers.

Summary: Fish is important in an Italian diet, but can accumulate contaminants such as PFASs and PTEs. This study investigated the presence of these contaminants in salted and canned anchovies collected from different fishing areas in Italy over 10 months. The results showed that the risk for consumers was generally low, except for one sample with concerns about nickel toxicity.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution of 14 different per-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) within milk by analyzing the content in whole milk, skim milk, and cream. Samples were taken from 23 cows in Northern Italy that were not exposed to known sources of PFASs. The most common PFAS found in all fractions was perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), followed by perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). PFOS concentration was higher in cream compared to raw and skimmed milk. Multiparous cows had higher levels of PFASs in their milk. Further research is needed to assess the risks of consuming dairy products contaminated with PFASs and their impact on cattle health.

Maria Nobile, Francesco Arioli, Dalia Curci, Claudia Ancillotti, Giulia Scanavini, Luca Maria Chiesa, Sara Panseri

Summary: This study analyzed the presence of PFASs in eggs produced in a PFASs-contaminated area in Northern Italy. The highest concentrations of PFASs were found in eggs from Veneto and Emilia Romagna, but were still well below the maximum limit set by the European Union. Therefore, egg consumption does not pose a risk to Italian consumers.
