Whether zinc nanoparticles (NPs) are phytotoxic or beneficial to plants remains controversial because of limited research. In this study, we investigated the effect of various concentrations of zinc oxide (ZnO) NPs (0, 1, 5, 20, 100, and 1000 mg kg(-1)of soil) on lettuce (Lactuca sativaL.) and carrot (Daucus carotasubsp.sativus) plants. Plants of both crop species grown in ZnO NPs showed a significant increase in biomass compared with control plants (0 mg kg(-1)), except for lettuce plants grown in the highest concentration of NPs (1000 mg kg(-1)), indicating that ZnO NPs acted as a fertilizer. Additionally, control plants showed lower levels of chlorophyll and zinc, magnesium, and potassium than plants grown in ZnO NPs, except for the Mg content of carrot roots grown in 20 mg kg(-1)ZnO NPs. Plants of both species grown in 5 and 20 mg kg(-1)ZnO NPs showed the highest concentration of nitrogen. Negative effects of ZnO NPs were evident only in lettuce plants grown in 1000 mg kg(-1)ZnO NPs, which is more likely an exaggerated level rather than an environmentally realistic concentration. Thus, our data suggest that ZnO NPs are a fertilizer for crop plants and would increase crop productivity when used carefully.

Comparison of water depth tolerance in two major wetland macrophytes, Phragmites australis and Typha angustifolia

U. Song

Summary: The study found that Typha angustifolia is able to survive in deeper water than Phragmites australis, possibly because of its greater tolerance to deep water and root aeration. This helps explain the clear zonation of the two species in aquatic habitats.

Allelopathic potential of invasive Hypochaeris radicata weed on Brassica napus and Lactuca sativa

M. Lee, B. W. Kim, U. Song

Summary: The aqueous extracts of Hypochaeris radicata did not affect seed germination, but significantly decreased seedling root elongation, growth, and chlorophyll content in indoor bioassays. However, the effects varied in outdoor experiments on Brassica napus and Erigeron annuus. Further studies are needed to understand the allelopathic effects of H. radicata under dry conditions in mainland Korea as it continues to spread, and to predict its invasion through careful studies and field monitoring in Pacific area countries with changing climates.

Spatial Distribution, Growth Conditions and Local Utilization for Conservation Strategy of an Endangered Species Azolla japonica

Summary: Aquatic plants, such as the water fern Azolla japonica, play a crucial role in freshwater biodiversity but are easily impacted by external factors, leading to endangerment. Research in Korea found populations of A. japonica on Jeju Island, with the most successful growth in distilled water with commercial soil bed treatment. The study also suggests linking endangered species conservation with local agricultural products for habitat restoration, presenting a comprehensive approach for restoring and conserving A. japonica populations.

Summary: This study developed a crop introduction risk assessment system using text mining method to prevent potential side effects of introduced crops. A Preliminary Environmental Impact Assessment Index was designed based on ecological research to evaluate the risks of introduced crops to the natural environment. The study assessed 67 crop species introduced to South Korea and developed protocols and a manual for the preliminary environmental risk assessment of introduced species. The presented crop introduction risk assessment system is effective in identifying potential problem-making crop species.

Recycling Phosphorus Isolated from Wastewater by Magnesium-Induced Precipitate: A New P Recycling Method as a Fertilizer for Plants

Uhram Song

Summary: In this study, livestock wastewater was treated with sodium hydroxide and magnesium chloride, and the resulting precipitate was used as fertilizer for tomato and oilseed rape crops. The treatment successfully reduced the concentration of phosphorous in the wastewater and improved plant performance. This method can help reduce pollution caused by livestock wastewater and promote nutrient recycling.

Assessing phytotoxicity of microplastics on aquatic plants using fluorescent microplastics

Uhram Song, Jungkil Kim, Hojun Rim

Summary: Although knowledge about the toxicity of microplastics is still limited, this study investigates the phytotoxicity of 1-μm-sized fluorescent microplastics on free-floating aquatic plants Spirodela polyrhiza and Salvinia natans, as well as emergent aquatic plant Phragmites australis. The study confirms the uptake of microplastics by plants through detection of fluorescence, and demonstrates the phytotoxicity effect on S. polyrhiza and P. australis but not S. natans. This pioneering study provides a baseline for further research on fluorescent microplastic uptake and toxicity in aquatic plants.
