Excessive training may limit physiological muscle adaptation through chronic oxidative stress and inflammation. Improper diet and overtraining may also disrupt intestinal homeostasis and in consequence enhance inflammation. Altogether, these factors may lead to an imbalance in the gut ecosystem, causing dysregulation of the immune system. Therefore, it seems to be important to optimize the intestinal microbiota composition, which is able to modulate the immune system and reduce oxidative stress. Moreover, the optimal intestinal microbiota composition may have an impact on muscle protein synthesis and mitochondrial biogenesis and function, as well as muscle glycogen storage. Aproperly balanced microbiome may also reduce inflammatory markers and reactive oxygen species production, which may further attenuate macromolecules damage. Consequently, supplementation with probiotics may have some beneficial effect on aerobic and anaerobic performance. The phenomenon of gut-muscle axis should be continuously explored to function maintenance, not only in athletes.

Beata Loniewska, Magda Fraszczyk-Tousty, Piotr Tousty, Karolina Skonieczna-Zydecka, Dominika Maciejewska-Markiewicz, Igor Loniewski

Summary: This study analyzed 456 fecal samples from 86 children to investigate the influence of perinatal factors on the concentrations of fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) during the first two years of life. The results showed that SCFA concentrations increased until 12 months and then stabilized. Factors such as antibiotic treatment during pregnancy, mode of delivery, feeding formula, and maternal weight gain were found to be associated with changes in SCFA concentrations. Higher SCFA levels were observed in infants born to mothers with normal pre-pregnancy weight and adequate weight gain. Additionally, female infants had higher levels of acetic acid at 2 years old. The study suggests the need for further long-term epidemiological studies in this area.

The Impact of Whey Protein Supplementation on Sarcopenia Progression among the Elderly: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Magdalena Sylwia Kaminska, Kamila Rachubinska, Szymon Grochans, Karolina Skonieczna-Zydecka, Anna Maria Cybulska, Elzbieta Grochans, Beata Karakiewicz

Summary: We conducted a systematic literature review and meta-analysis to investigate the role of whey protein supplementation in the functioning of the elderly with sarcopenia. Results demonstrated that whey protein supplementation combined with age-appropriate physical exercise might improve muscle mass and lower limb function in sarcopenic patients. However, study duration and age significantly affect the handgrip strength rate and the chair and stand test rate, respectively, indicating the need to consider these factors for sarcopenia prevention in the high-risk group.

Summary: The relationship between drugs and microbiota is two-way. The proper composition and function of microbiota are key factors for some medications used in modern medicine. On the other hand, pharmacotherapeutic agents can significantly modify the microbiota, which in turn affects its function. A recent study revealed that nearly 25% of drugs administered to humans have antimicrobial effects. Multiple antidepressants have antimicrobial properties, and there are antibiotics with proven antidepressant effects. Additionally, antibiotics can cause mental phenotype changes, and some antibiotics have adverse effects including neurological and psychological symptoms, supporting the hypothesis that intestinal microbiota may affect the function of the central nervous system. We have comprehensively collected data on psychiatric drugs and their antimicrobial properties, which we believe has strong implications for the treatment of psychiatric entities. However, our study also highlights the need for more well-designed trials to analyze the function of gut microbiota.
