Summary: This preclinical experimental study evaluated the impact of the methyl-ester of pro-resolving lipid mediator lipoxin A(4) (LXA(4)-ME) on scarring in a novel rabbit model of cleft lip repair. The results showed that LXA(4)-ME can reduce inflammation, decrease scar formation, and improve wound healing outcomes.

Summary: Patients with repaired unilateral cleft lip with palate (UCLP) often exhibit dysmorphology and distorted facial motion, which may lead to psychological issues. This study explored the differences in three-dimensional facial displacement while smiling between the Cleft and Control groups, revealing characteristic abnormal features in the Cleft group such as restricted movement on scar area and asymmetric displacement. The physical properties of facial soft tissues, especially at the scar, significantly influenced facial displacement during smiling in the UCLP patients.

Summary: By modifying patients' postoperative photographs, the study found that lip angle has a smaller impact on appearance ratings compared to scar severity. Although families are more concerned about scarring, clinically, the angle of the cleft lip repair is more likely to influence the perception of the surgical result.

Summary: This study used magnetoencephalography to objectively evaluate lip sensation in patients with cleft lip after cheiloplasty. The results showed a difference in lip sensation between the cleft lip group and the control group, suggesting that surgical scarring might affect the neurotransmission pathway. This study could potentially improve future surgical procedures and lip function for patients with cleft lip.

Summary: This article emphasizes the benefits of a multidisciplinary team approach in the systemic management of patients with cleft lip and cleft palate, and suggests the addition of a registered dietitian to the care team. An ideal cleft palate care team should focus on a comprehensive, collaborative, and family-centered approach. While care teams may vary depending on context and location, there are still some key principles.

Summary: This study aimed to restore upper lip symmetry and minimize tissue sacrifice using a curved line design and wire technique. The results showed that the curved line group had significantly greater vertical length ratios compared to the conventional group, while the horizontal length ratios were not significantly different between the two groups. Therefore, curved line cheiloplasty should be adopted whenever appropriate to prevent the development of short lip deformity.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the nationwide variation in commercial payer-negotiated rates for cleft lip and palate surgery and compare them to Medicaid rates. The results showed significant variation in commercial rates within and across hospitals, with lower rates in small, safety-net, or nonprofit hospitals. Additionally, there was no positive correlation between Medicaid rates and commercial rates.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the trends in cleft surgeries, patterns of cleft surgeries, and factors related to late primary repair at the University College Hospital in Ibadan, Nigeria. The study found that there has been a shift from Von Langenbeck palatoplasty to Bardachs two-flap palatoplasty, and the introduction of intra-velar veloplasty and Fisher's method of lip repair. Additionally, children with unilateral cleft lip were found to have a higher risk of late primary repair.

Summary: This study used surface electromyography to analyze the involvement of muscles in sucking and swallowing in premature infants and studied their relationship with gestational age, birth weight, and umbilical blood pH. The results showed that premature infants with younger gestational age had higher suprahyoid muscle tension, and there was a positive correlation between pH value and suprahyoid muscles. Therefore, sEMG may be a useful diagnostic tool in evaluating the masticatory system of premature infants.

Summary: Cancer treatment poses a significant challenge, often resulting in adverse effects, including oral complications. This review focuses on the common dental problems encountered by patients undergoing chemotherapy, with a particular emphasis on oral mucositis, a major dose-limiting toxicity. Additionally, oral candidiasis, viral infections, and xerostomia are discussed. The prevention of these complications is crucial, and all patients should undergo a thorough oral examination and receive appropriate prophylaxis before starting systemic anticancer treatment.

Summary: This article focuses on the case of an 8-year-old child with RTT and the use of botulinum toxin-based treatment for teeth grinding. The study utilizes surface electromyography to monitor the effects of the treatment, and results show a significant reduction in grinding frequency and tension of the affected muscles. The article emphasizes the need for further research on a larger sample to establish the efficacy of botulinum toxin therapy for patients with RTT.

Summary: Comparing different surgical methods for removing foreign bodies from the maxillary sinus, it was found that functional endoscopic sinus surgery may be a safer and more effective approach, while using replaceable or pedicled bone methods and the Caldwell-Luc approach have higher rates of late complications. Further investigation, especially in prospective, randomized trials, is needed to establish functional endoscopic sinus surgery as the gold standard for retrieving foreign bodies from the maxillary sinus.
