Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using correction modeling to improve the accuracy of mother-reported child height and weight at 2 years. Correction modeling for BMI was conducted, and the indirect correction method showed better prediction of overweight status and agreement with measured values compared to the mother-reported measures.

Summary: There is a correlation between body mass index (BMI) spectrum and complicated appendicitis and postoperative complications in pediatric patients. Underweight patients have a higher risk of complicated appendicitis, while overweight patients have a lower risk. Obesity, underweight, and interactions with preoperative white blood cells are associated with postoperative complications.

Summary: This study revealed that despite having a BMI over 25, overweight or obese hip fracture patients have a considerable rate of malnutrition, which significantly affects their clinical outcomes such as increased likelihood of 12-month mortality, post-operative delirium, and delayed post-operative mobility. Comprehensive nutrition assessment measures are recommended for all hip fracture inpatients to ensure appropriate clinical nutrition care.

Summary: There are differences in underlying cardiovascular comorbidities and clinical outcomes of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in Texas and New York state. Patients in Texas were younger, had higher BMI, and had higher rates of diabetes mellitus, while patients in New York state had higher rates of coronary artery disease and atrial fibrillation. The use of pharmacologic circulatory support, mechanical ventilation, and hemodialysis were more frequent in the Texas cohort.

Summary: Patients with achondroplasia often require otolaryngologic surgery, particularly adenoidectomy and/or tonsillectomy as well as tympanostomy tube placement. Such surgeries are now performed more frequently and at younger ages than in earlier decades. However, long-term outcome studies are needed to further understand the impact of early identification and treatment of otolaryngologic disease associated with achondroplasia.

Summary: The study found that fever itself or physiological changes associated with infections are linked to certain birth defects, particularly those involving the spine, limbs, and heart. It is important for pregnant or planning-to-be-pregnant women to consider ways to avoid infections that may cause fever and seek guidance on how to treat fevers during pregnancy.

Summary: This study presents a method called zFACE, which uses a coordinate extrapolation system to rapidly analyze craniofacial development in zebrafish embryos. By capturing confocal images and quantifying morphometric data, this method can detect phenotypic variation and inform on changes in facial morphology. The results showed that loss of the smarca4a gene in developing zebrafish leads to craniofacial anomalies, microcephaly, and alterations in brain morphology. zFACE provides a way to rapidly and quantitatively assess the impact of genetic alterations on craniofacial development in zebrafish.

Summary: This study examined the frequency and risk factors for orthopedic surgery in patients with achondroplasia. The results showed that 29.7% of patients underwent at least one orthopedic procedure, with spine surgery being less common (12.7%) and occurring at a later age than lower extremity surgery (21.2%). Risk factors for orthopedic surgery included hydrocephalus with shunt placement, cervicomedullary decompression, and previous lower extremity surgery. These findings provide important information for clinicians to counsel patients and families about orthopedic surgery.
