Occupational pesticide use and self-reported olfactory impairment in US farmers

Summary: The study found associations between pesticide exposure and olfactory impairment, especially with the long-term use of certain pesticides increasing the risk of olfactory impairment. These associations were relatively broad, involving multiple pesticides and chemical classes, suggesting that pesticides may affect olfaction through multiple pathways.

Disinfection By-Products in Drinking Water and Bladder Cancer: Evaluation of Risk Modification by Common Genetic Polymorphisms in Two Case-Control Studies

Karagas, Nathaniel Rothman, Debra T. Silverman

Summary: This study investigated the combined effect on bladder cancer risk contributed by TTHMs, bladder cancer susceptibility variants identified through genome-wide association studies, and variants in several candidate genes. The results showed that rs907611 at 11p15.5 exhibited the strongest associations in the highest exposure category in both studies, with evidence of interaction.

Use of permethrin and other pyrethroids and mortality in the Agricultural Health Study

Srishti Shrestha, Christine G. Parks, David M. Umbach, Jonathan N. Hofmann, Laura E. Beane Freeman, Aaron Blair, Dale P. Sandler

Summary: By studying 50,665 licensed pesticide applicators, it was found that the use of pyrethroid insecticides did not show clear evidence of association with overall mortality or most causes examined. However, there was suggestive evidence of elevated mortality from certain neurological, respiratory, and genitourinary diseases, as well as lung cancer among never-smokers.

Summary: Exposure to pesticides and farm activities may contribute to wheeze among farm women.

Glyphosate exposure and urinary oxidative stress biomarkers in the Agricultural Health Study

Vicky C. Chang, Gabriella Andreotti, Maria Ospina, Christine G. Parks, Danping Liu, Joseph J. Shearer, Nathaniel Rothman, Debra T. Silverman, Dale P. Sandler, Antonia M. Calafat, Laura E. Beane Freeman, Jonathan N. Hofmann

Summary: This study investigated the association between glyphosate exposure and urinary oxidative stress biomarkers in farmers. The results showed that urinary glyphosate concentrations were positively associated with levels of oxidative stress biomarkers, such as 8-OHdG and MDA. The findings support the association between glyphosate exposure and oxidative stress in humans.

Summary: This study used Mendelian randomization (MR) to investigate the relationship between genetic predisposition to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and risk for pancreatic cancer. The results showed no association between genetically predicted NAFLD and pancreatic cancer risk, suggesting that any association between NAFLD and pancreatic cancer might be due to metabolic disturbances rather than a causal relationship.

Firefighting and Cancer: A Meta-analysis of Cohort Studies in the Context of Cancer Hazard Identification

Nathan L. DeBono, Robert D. Daniels, Laura E. Beane Freeman, Judith M. Graber, Johnni Hansen, Lauren R. Teras, Tim Driscoll, Kristina Kjaerheim, Paul A. Demers, Deborah C. Glass, David Kriebel, Tracy L. Kirkham, Roland Wedekind, Adalberto M. Filho, Leslie Stayner, Mary K. Schubauer-Berigan

Summary: This study is a meta-analysis of the association between occupational exposure as a firefighter and cancer. The results show that there is epidemiological evidence supporting a causal relationship between being a firefighter and certain cancers, but challenges remain in exposure assessment, confounding, and medical surveillance bias.
