Background: Three cases of the application of focused cardiac ultrasound in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 are presented. Methods: Cardiac point-of-care ultrasound, limited transthoracic echocardiography, and critical care echocardiography were applied in cases of heart failure, pulmonary embolism, and myocarditis with thrombus respectively. Results: The impact on patient management and the global context of each presentation are discussed. Conclusions: Focused cardiac point-of-care ultrasound played an important, front-line role in the bedside management of patients during the COVID-19 pandemic in Wuhan, China.

Enhanced Local Delivery of microRNA-145a-5P into Mouse Aorta via Ultrasound-Targeted Microbubble Destruction Inhibits Atherosclerotic Plaque Formation

Yu Wu, Cheng Deng, Jia Xu, Wei Wang, Yihan Chen, Xiaojuan Qin, Qing Lv, Mingxing Xie

Summary: Abnormal proliferation and migration of VSMCs are crucial in the formation and rupture of atherosclerotic plaques. The use of UTMD for miR-145 delivery significantly improved gene transfection efficiency and promoted the contraction phenotype of VSMCs in vitro. In vivo, this approach reduced the atherosclerotic plaque area compared to free miR-145 treatment.

Clinical Utility of Strain Imaging in Assessment of Myocardial Fibrosis

Summary: Myocardial fibrosis (MF), a non-reversible process, is a crucial pathological manifestation in patients with end-stage cardiovascular diseases and closely related to cardiac adverse events. Early quantitative analysis of MF, using strain imaging techniques, plays an important role in risk stratification, clinical decision, and improvement in prognosis, by detecting MF early in cardiovascular diseases.

Clinical Usefulness of Right Ventricle-Pulmonary Artery Coupling in Cardiovascular Disease

Qing He, Yixia Lin, Ye Zhu, Lang Gao, Mengmeng Ji, Li Zhang, Mingxing Xie, Yuman Li

Summary: Right ventricular-pulmonary artery coupling refers to the relationship between RV contractility and RV afterload. RV-PA uncoupling leads to RV dysfunction and right heart failure. Accurate evaluation of RV-PA coupling is important for patient assessment, clinical decision making, risk stratification, and prognosis judgment in cardiovascular diseases.

Application and Progress of Artificial Intelligence in Fetal Ultrasound

Sushan Xiao, Junmin Zhang, Ye Zhu, Zisang Zhang, Haiyan Cao, Mingxing Xie, Li Zhang

Summary: Prenatal ultrasonography is a crucial tool in pregnancy, but limitations such as fetal mobility, maternal abdominal thickness, and inter-observer variability hinder traditional ultrasound's clinical application. The combination of artificial intelligence (AI) and obstetric ultrasound can optimize fetal ultrasound examination by reducing time, workload, and improving diagnostic accuracy. AI has been successfully used for automatic fetal ultrasound detection, biometric measurements, and disease diagnosis, enhancing traditional imaging approaches. This review comprehensively examines the applications and advantages of AI in prenatal fetal ultrasound, and discusses the challenges and potential of this emerging field.

Ultrasound-Responsive Biomimetic Superhydrophobic Drug-Loaded Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles for Treating Prostate Tumor

Summary: In this study, ultrasound-responsive biomimetic superhydrophobic mesoporous silica nanoparticles, modified with red blood cell membrane and loaded with doxorubicin, were used for RM-1 tumor sonodynamic therapy. The use of these nanoparticles resulted in significantly higher accumulation in the tumor and reduced uptake in the spleen compared to the control group. The combination of the nanoparticles and multiple ultrasounds provided continuous sonodynamic therapy, resulting in a significantly better tumor inhibition rate in the experimental group.

Ultrasonic Microbubble Cavitation Deliver Gal-3 shRNA to Inhibit Myocardial Fibrosis after Myocardial Infarction

Wenqu Li, Qiaofeng Jin, Li Zhang, Shukun He, Yishu Song, Lingling Xu, Cheng Deng, Lufang Wang, Xiaojuan Qin, Mingxing Xie

Summary: This study explored the value and mechanism of ultrasound-targeted microbubble destruction (UTMD)-mediated Galectin-3 (Gal-3) short hairpin RNA (shRNA) transfection in anti-myocardial fibrosis. The results showed that Gal-3 shRNA/CMBs + US improved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and reduced myocardial fibrosis area, collagen expression, and production. In conclusion, UTMD-mediated Gal-3 shRNA transfection effectively silenced Gal-3 expression, alleviated myocardial fibrosis, and protected cardiac ejection function.

Clinical Usefulness of Speckle-Tracking Echocardiography in Patients with Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction

Yixia Lin, Li Zhang, Xiaoqing Hu, Lang Gao, Mengmeng Ji, Qing He, Mingxing Xie, Yuman Li

Summary: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is a condition where the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is not less than 50%. It accounts for more than 50% of all heart failure cases and its prevalence is increasing due to the aging population. However, assessing cardiac function and prognosis in HFpEF patients is challenging due to the normal range of LVEF and nonspecific symptoms and signs. Speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE) has emerged as a sensitive and accurate method for comprehensive assessment of cardiac function and prognosis in HFpEF patients.
