Signs and symptoms method in neuropsychology: A preliminary investigation of a standardized clinical interview for assessment of cognitive decline in dementia

Carlo Abbate, Pietro Davide Trimarchi, Silvia Inglese, Emanuele Tomasini, Renzo Bagarolo, Fabrizio Giunco, Matteo Cesari

Summary: A standardized observational NeuroPsychological Examination (NPE) designed for psychologists was proposed and evaluated for its clinical effectiveness in diagnosing cognitive decline in dementia patients. The NPE showed higher sensitivity and specificity in detecting abnormalities in AD and VaD patients compared to healthy controls, with significant differences in pathological signs between AD and VaD patients. The study suggests that NPE is a promising tool for diagnosing dementia.

Comprehensive geriatric assessment in older adults with cancer: Recommendations by the Italian Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology (SIGG)

Domenico Fusco, Alessandro Ferrini, Giuseppe Pasqualetti, Chiara Giannotti, Matteo Cesari, Alice Laudisio, Alberto Ballestrero, Stefano Scabini, Patrizio R. Odetti, Giuseppe F. Colloca, Fabio Monzani, Alessio Nencioni, Raffaele Antonelli Incalzi, Fiammetta Monacelli

Summary: Optimizing the approach to older adults with cancer is a priority due to the increasing frequency of new cancer diagnoses in this population. The comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) is crucial for defining prognosis, exploring the complexity of frail older individuals, and designing personalized interventions. The adoption of a standardized CGA model by oncology centers can lead to improved therapeutic choices and clinical outcomes by facilitating comparisons, promoting multidimensional patient assessments, and integrating geriatricians into oncology care teams.

Medication Management in Frail Older People: Consensus Principles for Clinical Practice, Research, and Education

Shin J. Liau, Samanta Lalic, Janet K. Sluggett, Matteo Cesari, Graziano Onder, Davide L. Vetrano, Lucas Morin, Sirpa Hartikainen, Aleksi Hamina, Kristina Johnell, Edwin C. K. Tan, Renuka Visvanathan, J. Simon Bell

Summary: This report presents international consensus principles related to medication management in frail older people, covering clinical practice, research, and education. These principles highlight different considerations for optimizing medication management in frail older people and can be used in conjunction with existing best practice guidelines to help achieve optimal health outcomes for this vulnerable population.

Summary: The study found a significant positive correlation between skeletal muscle mass and left ventricular mass in older individuals, independent of other potential confounders. This suggests the need for further research on interventions targeting left ventricular mass and skeletal muscle mass.

Different dimensions of social support differentially predict psychological well-being in late life: opposite effects of perceived emotional support and marital status on symptoms of anxiety and of depression in older outpatients in Italy

Paola Nicolini, Carlo Abbate, Silvia Inglese, Paolo D. Rossi, Daniela Mari, Matteo Cesari

Summary: Social support plays an important role in late-life psychological well-being, with perceived emotional support negatively impacting anxiety and depression symptoms, while marital status can have a positive effect on anxiety and depression symptoms. The study highlights the different dimensions of social support and their differential effects on mental health.

Summary: This study provides specific recommendations for the design of clinical trials for drugs to prevent or treat sarcopenia. Randomized placebo-controlled double-blind parallel-arm trials are recommended as the design of choice for both phase II and III trials, with participants aged at least 70 years old presenting a combination of low muscle strength and low physical performance. Multiple outcome measures are proposed for different phases of the trials.

ICT technologies as new promising tools for the managing of frailty: a systematic review

Alessia Gallucci, Pietro Davide Trimarchi, Carlo Abbate, Cosimo Tuena, Elisa Pedroli, Fabrizia Lattanzio, Marco Stramba-Badiale, Matteo Cesari, Fabrizio Giunco

Summary: Research on the use of ICT in the context of frailty is still in its early stages, with few studies focusing strictly on frailty assessment and rare reports of ICT interventions for frailty. The lack of proper characterization of frailty condition and methodological limitations have hindered the investigation of ICT within complex care models. Future studies are needed to effectively integrate ICT in the care of frailty in older persons.

ONGOING RESEARCH PROTOCOLS FOR THE PHARMACOLOGICAL TREATMENT OF NEUROPSYCHIATRIC SYMPTOMS IN DEMENTIA

Summary: Research on effective interventions for neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) in dementia is lacking compared to the importance placed on these symptoms by patients and caregivers. Current research efforts tend to prioritize disease-modifying approaches over addressing NPS, contributing to a gap between research activities and clinical needs.
