Association between sleep duration and asthma in different weight statuses (CHNS 2009-2015)

Zhigang Hu, Xinyu Song, Ke Hu, Yushu Ruan, Fanjun Zeng

Summary: Inadequate sleep duration is associated with asthma and weight issues in the Chinese population. Short and long sleepers with central obesity and underweight status have a higher prevalence of asthma than optimal sleepers.

Association of different Candida species with catheter-related candidemia, and the potential antifungal treatments against their adhesion properties and biofilm-forming capabilities

Xiao-shu Zuo, Yanan Liu, Xuan Cai, Liying Zhan, Ke Hu

Summary: Non-albicans Candida species, especially C. guilliermondii, C. tropicalis, and C. parapsilosis, showed higher adhesion ability in catheter-related candidemia patients. However, these species displayed varied biofilm-forming capabilities. MF demonstrated stronger inhibitory effects against both adhesion and biofilm formation of different Candida species.

The combination of intermittent electrical stimulation with acute intermittent hypoxia strengthens genioglossus muscle discharge in chronic intermittent hypoxia-pretreated rats

Huaheng Mo, JingJing Zhao, Xiaofeng Wu, Wei Liu, Ke Hu

Summary: By combining intermittent electrical stimulation with acute intermittent hypoxia in CIH-pretreated rats can enhance the activity of the genioglossus discharge. This enhancement is significantly higher in CIH-pretreated rats than in normoxic rats, with increased duration and degree.

The influence of acute morphine use on obstructive sleep apnea: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Shiqian Zha, Haizhen Yang, Fang Yue, Qingfeng Zhang, Ke Hu

Summary: The study systematically evaluated the acute effect of morphine on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) through meta-analysis of three randomized controlled trials. The analysis found no significant differences in various sleep and respiratory parameters between patients with OSA taking morphine and those taking placebo/non-opioids, challenging the conventional belief that opioids worsen OSA.

Summary: The prevalence of polycythemia is higher in patients with overlap syndrome (OVS) than in those with COPD alone, and blood oxygen saturation is associated with polycythemia.

The Effect of Short Sleep Duration on the Development of Asthma

Zhigang Hu, Xinyu Song, Ke Hu

Summary: The study found that short sleep duration may increase the risk of central obesity in asthmatics, reduce FeNO levels, and increase lung function impairment. In asthmatics, short sleep duration is negatively associated with comorbidities and the risk of emergency hospitalization.

Lianhuaqingwen alleviates p53-mediated apoptosis in alveolar epithelial cells to prevent LPS-induced ALI

Ruhao Yang, Haizhen Yang, Wenqiang Li, Fang Yue, Hao Chen, Yueying Hao, Ke Hu

Summary: Lianhuaqingwen inhibits p53-mediated apoptosis in alveolar epithelial cells, thereby preventing LPS-induced acute lung injury (ALI). It enhances cell viability, reduces reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and decreases apoptotic cells. Lianhuaqingwen also increases Bcl-2 expression, decreases Bax, caspase-9, and caspase-3 expression, and blocks cytochrome C release.

Combined noradrenergic plus antimuscarinic agents for obstructive sleep apnea- A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Shiqian Zha, Haizhen Yang, Fang Yue, Qingfeng Zhang, Ke Hu

Summary: Currently, there is no routine pharmacotherapy for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, a recent systematic review and meta-analysis showed that combined noradrenergic and antimuscarinic agents can improve OSA severity and upper airway function. Further study is needed to determine the long-term efficacy and safety of this drug combination in OSA patients.

Summary: Intermittent transcutaneous electrical stimulation (ITES) improves upper airway obstruction in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Further validation of the intermittent approach is warranted.

Multi-dimensional analyses of the associations between depression, nocturnal awakening and asthmatic outcomes

Zhigang Hu, Yufeng Tian, Xinyu Song, Ke Hu, Ailan Yang

Summary: This study explores the associations between depression, nocturnal awakening and asthmatic outcomes. The findings suggest that nocturnal awakening and depression are positively associated with asthmatic episodes/attacks and emergency room visits. Depression was found to have a mild mediation effect on the associations between nocturnal awakening and asthmatic outcomes.

Pterostilbene mediates glial and immune responses to alleviate chronic intermittent hypoxia-induced oxidative stress in nerve cells

Peijun Liu, Pan Zhou, Xinyue Zhang, Dong Zhao, Hao Chen, Ke Hu

Summary: This study investigated the role of pterostilbene (Pte) in chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH)-induced oxidative stress in the brain. The results showed that Pte intervention improved neurological function and reduced oxidative stress and apoptosis in the brain tissue of CIH mice.

A randomized controlled crossover trial of acute intermittent and continuous hypoxia exposure in mild-moderate obstructive sleep apnea: A feasibility study

Shiqian Zha, Xu Liu, Hao Chen, Yueying Hao, Jingyi Zhang, Qingfeng Zhang, Ke Hu

Summary: In this study, the effects of acute intermittent hypoxia and acute continuous hypoxia on patients with mild-moderate obstructive sleep apnea were investigated. The results showed that acute intermittent hypoxia had better efficacy in improving apnea-hypopnea index and oxygen desaturation index compared to acute continuous hypoxia. Therefore, further validation of intermittent hypoxia in patients with obstructive sleep apnea is needed.
