Food transformation companies could employ LCA upstream of product development to eco-design their new products, in order to limit the impact of new food products on the environment. But the knowledge required when using LCA on food products under development is imperfect. This study aims to overcome the difficulties of assessing the environmental impacts of imprecise food pre-concepts early on in innovation process, by developing a three-step modular LCA method: (1) creation of scenarios for each pre-concept within four modules: ingredients, packaging, transportation, and energy + water; (2) transversal analyses of the module scenarios and the modules themselves to estimate the pre-concepts' environmental impacts, which were then conveyed by single scores; and (3) dissemination of the results to stakeholders. The method was applied to spirulina-based food pre-concepts. Results showed that the modular approach identified hotspots relevant to the company. The ingredients module contributed the most to the impacts but was the most variable and uncertain module. The single scores facilitated decision-making for stakeholders unfamiliar with LCA. But some expertise was required to inform the company on the origin of impacts and the causes of variations. The method served as an informational tool that led the food company to question some of its prevailing assumptions. This study concludes that it is possible to perform LCA on imprecise pre-concepts using a simplified modular framework. Research must continue to include agri-food data in LCA databases and to simplify the internalization of LCA expertise in agri-food businesses. (c) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Summary: This paper proposes an agile methodology for food product development that integrates consumers' insights and environmental concerns. The research methodology involved three iterative runs of product development, incorporating consumer feedback and environmental impact assessment. The main outcome was the successful integration of consumers as co-creators and the highlighting of environmental effects for decision-making.

Summary: This study explores the influence of consumers' Country of Origin (COO) on wine representations and perception, finding that South African consumers focus on personal experience while French consumers emphasize wine itself and origin information. The origin information has a greater impact on French participants, leading to a different sorting strategy based on the origin of the wines.

Development of a Hierarchical Rate-All-That-Apply (HRATA) methodology for the aromatic characterisation of wine

Summary: In order to facilitate the characterisation of wine aromas, a new approach called Hierarchical-Rate-All-That-Apply (HRATA) is proposed. HRATA combines the Rate-All-That-Apply (RATA) methodology with a hierarchical structuring of attributes to simplify data acquisition and analysis. HRATA was applied to the characterisation of five rose wines using 66 participants and 118 hierarchically structured attributes. The results obtained from HRATA were compared to those from a descriptive analysis (DA) conducted by a trained panel.

Comparison of ethane recovery processes for lean gas based on a coupled model

Summary: This study analyzes the characteristics of process parameters in three lean gas ethane recovery processes and establishes a prediction and multiobjective optimization model for ethane recovery and system energy consumption. A new method for comparing ethane recovery processes for lean gas is proposed, and the addition of extra coolers improves the ethane recovery. The support vector regression model based on grey wolf optimization demonstrates the highest prediction accuracy, and the multiobjective multiverse optimization algorithm shows the best optimization performance and diversity in the solutions.

A novel deep-learning framework for short-term prediction of cooling load in public buildings

Summary: The paper proposes a novel deep learning-based prediction framework, aTCN-LSTM, for accurate cooling load predictions. The framework utilizes a gate-controlled multi-head temporal convolutional network and a sparse probabilistic self-attention mechanism with a bidirectional long short-term memory network to capture both temporal and long-term dependencies in the cooling load sequences. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method, which can serve as an effective guide for HVAC chiller scheduling and demand management initiatives.

Summary: This study uses survey data from the Loess Plateau in China to evaluate the impact of social interaction on the adoption of soil and water conservation (SWC) technology by farmers. The study finds that social interaction increases the likelihood of farmers adopting SWC, and internet use moderates this effect. The positive impact of social interaction on SWC adoption is more pronounced for farmers in larger villages and those who join cooperative societies.
