Summary: For older patients with kidney failure, symptom burden worsened considerably before and stabilized after dialysis initiation. Fatigue, decreased interest in sex, and difficulty becoming sexually aroused were considered most burdensome, of which only fatigue somewhat improved after dialysis initiation.

Summary: The study revealed that hemodialysis (HD) patients are less active during dialysis days compared to non-dialysis days, and sedentary behavior increases the risk of death. Additionally, findings showed that body composition, physical fitness, and disease burden in HD patients are related to objectively measured physical activity.

Summary: The increasing burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and high treatment costs are major factors contributing to alarming morbidity and mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Lack of government financial support leads to out-of-pocket payments for CKD care, causing catastrophic health expenditure and worsening poverty. Government funding policies are necessary to mitigate the adverse health outcomes of poorly managed CKD in LMICs.

Summary: This prospective observational study described the importance and predictors of symptom burden and quality of life 3 months after hospital admission for acute chest pain. The study found that patients with non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) reported the most favorable outcomes after 3 months, while unstable angina pectoris (UAP) patients scored lower on all measures. Revascularization mediated the quality of life outcomes in UAP patients.

Summary: The symptom burden in adolescents and young adults with cancer in Canada is not well characterized and affects their quality of life. The study found that a significant proportion of these patients experience fatigue and anxiety. The severity of symptoms is closely related to the risk of death, highlighting the need for interventions to improve the quality of life in this population.

Summary: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a major cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) worldwide. Its prevalence in the elderly is increasing due to the trend of aging. Genetic factors, abnormal glucose metabolism, inflammation, mitochondrial dysregulation, and oxidative stress all play a role in the development of DKD. These pathobiological processes are likely to be intensified during aging, exacerbating the deterioration of renal functions and leading to ESRD. The pathogenesis of DKD in the elderly is not well-understood, and this study provides an appraisal of the relationship between diabetic nephropathy and aging, discussing the changes in the aged kidney, the impact of related mechanisms, and the latest advances in targeted therapies.

Summary: This study demonstrated the positive impact of preventing incident cases of kidney disease on work productivity using the novel measure of productivity-adjusted life year (PALY). The projections showed that preventing new cases of kidney disease could result in significant economic benefits, including savings in GDP and years of life lived. Preventive measures to reduce future cases of kidney disease were deemed necessary based on the findings.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the knowledge, opportunity, motivation, behavior of pharmacists and their information sources regarding antibiotic use and resistance in Jordan. The findings showed that pharmacists have good knowledge on the effective use, unnecessary use, and associated side effects of antibiotics, but have a lower understanding of the spread of antibiotic resistance. Most pharmacists support easy access to guidelines on managing infections and materials advising prudent antibiotic use. However, one-third of the respondents reported no knowledge of any initiatives on antibiotic awareness and resistance.

Summary: This study explores the stigmatization of healthcare providers (HCP) by patients during the COVID-19 outbreak in Jordan. The results show that many people have a high level of stigmatization towards HCPs during the pandemic, which is related to factors such as frequently hearing news, having children, and smoking. The study suggests the need for clear and sensible public education campaigns to increase public awareness and respect for HCPs.

Summary: This study investigates the changes in prevalence, severity, and risk factors of anxiety among healthcare workers during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings show an increase in anxiety among healthcare workers over the course of a year, with certain factors such as age, gender, marital status, income, contact with COVID-19 patients, and satisfaction with institutional preparedness being associated with higher anxiety levels. Occupation as a physician, history of COVID-19 infection, and perception of remarkable work changes were specifically linked to higher anxiety scores and severity in the one-year group.

Summary: This study assessed the reporting of antimicrobial-related adverse drug events (ADEs) in Jordan between 2003 and 2022. A total of 279 Individual Case Safety Reports (ICSRs) were recorded, with an increase in reporting since 2019. Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders were the most reported ADEs, and tetracyclines were the most commonly associated antibiotics. Patients who consumed Watch group antibiotics had a higher number of ADEs compared to those who consumed Access group antibiotics. Enhanced reporting of antimicrobial-related ADEs is needed to improve pharmacovigilance in Jordan.

Summary: Understanding healthcare professionals' perceptions, barriers, and facilitators to adopting a computerised decision support system (CDSS) for antibiotic prescribing in Jordanian hospitals is important for successful implementation. This cross-sectional study collected data from 254 healthcare professionals in Jordan's two hospitals and found that the majority were aware of the benefits of electronic prescribing and health record systems for antibiotic use. The availability of CDSS in a portable format and lack of sufficient training were identified as important facilitators and barriers, respectively. This study sheds light on the adoption of CDSS for antimicrobial stewardship and can inform policy decisions on implementing CDSS in Jordan and globally.

Summary: This study aimed to prepare, characterize, and evaluate hybrid lipid-polymer nanoparticles (PLNs) of ribociclib for breast cancer treatment. The optimized ribociclib-loaded PLNs exhibited small particle size and high encapsulation efficiency and showed good performance in terms of release behavior, cytotoxicity, and pharmacokinetics. The results demonstrated that the optimized PLNs could serve as an effective delivery vehicle for breast and lung cancer treatment.
