Purpose This study investigated the clinical characteristics and symptomatology of ESRD patients in Jordan taking a multidimensional approach. Methods This was a cross-sectional study that included a cohort of 620 patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (HD). Data were retrieved via patient survey administration and electronic health records. A modified version of the Charlson Comorbidity index (CCI) was utilized to assess comorbidity. Symptoms were assessed using the validated Arabic version of the CKD Symptom Burden Index (CKD-SBI). Results The mean (+/- SD) age of participants was 50.9 +/- 16.1 years, with the 59.8% being males. Diabetes was the leading cause of kidney disease among patients (29.2%), followed by hypertension (20.7%) and medication use (8.6%). Common comorbidities included hypertension (72.4%), diabetes (38.4%), and cardiovascular disease (18.7%). Patients experienced 13 CKD-related symptoms on average, with a total symptom burden score of 29.6. Muscle strain was the most common symptom (62.6%), followed by itchiness (59.7%), nervousness (57.7%), and anxiety (57.7%). Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) [beta = 0.88, 95% CI (0.34-1.41)], male gender [beta = - 5.59; 95% CI (- 8.34 to - 2.85)], higher educational level [beta = - 3.38; 95% CI (- 6.39 to - 0.37)], and number of dialysis sessions/week (beta = 6.22, 95% CI 3.37-9.07) were independent predictors of total symptom burden. Similarly, these factors predicted symptom troublesomeness, intensity, and recurrence. Conclusion A holistic clinical picture of ESRD that includes multidimensional symptom assessment is warranted for better disease management and resource allocation. Our paper identifies key characteristic of this population and factors contributing to total symptom burden.

Pharmacists' Knowledge, Attitudes, Behaviors and Information Sources on Antibiotic Use and Resistance in Jordan

Ghaith M. Al-Taani, Sayer Al-Azzam, Reema A. Karasneh, Adel Shaban Sadeq, Nadia Al Mazrouei, Stuart E. Bond, Barbara R. Conway, Mamoon A. Aldeyab

Summary: This study aimed to assess the knowledge, opportunity, motivation, behavior of pharmacists and their information sources regarding antibiotic use and resistance in Jordan. The findings showed that pharmacists have good knowledge on the effective use, unnecessary use, and associated side effects of antibiotics, but have a lower understanding of the spread of antibiotic resistance. Most pharmacists support easy access to guidelines on managing infections and materials advising prudent antibiotic use. However, one-third of the respondents reported no knowledge of any initiatives on antibiotic awareness and resistance.

Summary: This study explores the stigmatization of healthcare providers (HCP) by patients during the COVID-19 outbreak in Jordan. The results show that many people have a high level of stigmatization towards HCPs during the pandemic, which is related to factors such as frequently hearing news, having children, and smoking. The study suggests the need for clear and sensible public education campaigns to increase public awareness and respect for HCPs.

Prevalence Estimates and Risk Factors of Anxiety among Healthcare Workers in Jordan over One Year of the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Study

Ahmed Yassin, Abdel-Hameed Al-Mistarehi, Khalid El-Salem, Reema A. Karasneh, Sayer Al-Azzam, Aref A. Qarqash, Aws G. Khasawneh, Anas M. Zein Alaabdin, Ola Soudah

Summary: This study investigates the changes in prevalence, severity, and risk factors of anxiety among healthcare workers during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings show an increase in anxiety among healthcare workers over the course of a year, with certain factors such as age, gender, marital status, income, contact with COVID-19 patients, and satisfaction with institutional preparedness being associated with higher anxiety levels. Occupation as a physician, history of COVID-19 infection, and perception of remarkable work changes were specifically linked to higher anxiety scores and severity in the one-year group.

Exploring the effects of edaravone in rats with contrast-induced acute kidney injury

Osama Y. Alshogran, Aseel Y. Al Tahrawi, Shreen D. Nusair

Summary: This study investigated the effects of edaravone in rats with contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI), and found that edaravone could potentially ameliorate the development of CI-AKI by improving renal antioxidant capacity. Pre-treatment with edaravone normalized kidney function and protected the kidney from oxidative damage.

Summary: This study assessed the reporting of antimicrobial-related adverse drug events (ADEs) in Jordan between 2003 and 2022. A total of 279 Individual Case Safety Reports (ICSRs) were recorded, with an increase in reporting since 2019. Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders were the most reported ADEs, and tetracyclines were the most commonly associated antibiotics. Patients who consumed Watch group antibiotics had a higher number of ADEs compared to those who consumed Access group antibiotics. Enhanced reporting of antimicrobial-related ADEs is needed to improve pharmacovigilance in Jordan.

Healthcare Professionals' Perceptions, Barriers, and Facilitators towards Adopting Computerised Clinical Decision Support Systems in Antimicrobial Stewardship in Jordanian Hospitals

Fares Albahar, Rana K. Abu-Farha, Osama Y. Alshogran, Hamza Alhamad, Chris E. Curtis, John F. Marriott

Summary: Understanding healthcare professionals' perceptions, barriers, and facilitators to adopting a computerised decision support system (CDSS) for antibiotic prescribing in Jordanian hospitals is important for successful implementation. This cross-sectional study collected data from 254 healthcare professionals in Jordan's two hospitals and found that the majority were aware of the benefits of electronic prescribing and health record systems for antibiotic use. The availability of CDSS in a portable format and lack of sufficient training were identified as important facilitators and barriers, respectively. This study sheds light on the adoption of CDSS for antimicrobial stewardship and can inform policy decisions on implementing CDSS in Jordan and globally.
