Background and Aims Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a new infectious disease. To reveal the hepatic injury related to this disease and its clinical significance, we conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study that included 5,771 adult patients with COVID-19 pneumonia in Hubei Province. Approach and Results We reported the distributional and temporal patterns of liver injury indicators in these patients and determined their associated factors and death risk. Longitudinal liver function tests were retrospectively analyzed and correlated with the risk factors and death. Liver injury dynamic patterns differed in alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and total bilirubin (TBIL). AST elevated first, followed by ALT, in severe patients. ALP modestly increased during hospitalization and largely remained in the normal range. The fluctuation in TBIL levels was mild in the non-severe and the severe groups. AST abnormality was associated with the highest mortality risk compared with the other indicators of liver injury during hospitalization. Common factors associated with elevated liver injury indicators were lymphocyte count decrease, neutrophil count increase, and male gender. Conclusion The dynamic patterns of liver injury indicators and their potential risk factors may provide an important explanation for the COVID-19-associated liver injury. Because elevated liver injury indicators, particularly AST, are strongly associated with the mortality risk, our study indicates that these parameters should be monitored during hospitalization.

Predicting Distant Metastasis in Young-Onset Colorectal Cancer After Surgery: A Retrospective Study

Jie Cheng, Yao-Jia Lao, Qian Wang, Kai Huang, Juan-Li Mou, Jia-Hui Feng, Fan Hu, Meng-Lu Lin, Jun Lin

Summary: In young-onset CRC patients, preoperative CEA positive was found to be a significant predictor of distant metastasis (DM). A novel nomogram containing clinical and pathological features was established to predict DM in advanced CRC patients younger than 50 years old, showing high accuracy and stability. This tool can serve as an early alert for clinicians to DM and help in developing better clinical treatment regimens.

Yang Liu, Wenxin Wang, Xuewei Huang, Xingyuan Zhang, Lijin Lin, Juan-Juan Qin, Fang Lei, Jingjing Cai, Bo Cheng

Summary: This study analyzed the burden of stroke specifically attributable to high fasting plasma glucose (HFPG) in various countries and regions globally. The results demonstrate a close relationship between HFPG and stroke burden, which is influenced by age and gender. Therefore, targeted prevention and control strategies for HFPG are of paramount importance in reducing the burden of stroke.

Plasma metabolomics provides new insights into the relationship between metabolites and outcomes and left ventricular remodeling of coronary artery disease

Summary: In this study, several plasma metabolic signatures associated with the risk of death and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) were identified and validated using widely-targeted metabolomics. The study also revealed that these metabolic signatures appear to increase the risks of death or MACE by promoting adverse left ventricular dysfunction. These findings contribute to improving risk stratification and provide support for potential therapeutic targets in CAD.

Summary: In this study, the association between insulin resistance (IR) and bone mass was evaluated in a Chinese population. The results showed a significant correlation between IR and low bone mass as well as osteoporosis. These findings suggest the importance of bone mass monitoring and early prevention strategies in individuals with IR to prevent the occurrence of low bone mass and osteoporosis.

Long-term exposure to air pollution and increased risk of atrial fibrillation prevalence in China

Tao Sun, Zhanpeng Wang, Fang Lei, Lijin Lin, Xingyuan Zhang, Xiaohui Song, Yan-Xiao Ji, Xiao-Jing Zhang, Peng Zhang, Zhi-Gang She, Jingjing Cai, Peng Jia, Hongliang Li

Summary: This study found that long-term exposure to PM2.5 and PM10 is positively associated with atrial fibrillation (AF) prevalence in China. The association is stronger in females, people under 65 years old, and those with hypertension and diabetes. Furthermore, the study identified PM2.5 sulfate as having the highest contribution to the overall mixture effects among all PM2.5 chemical constituents.

Summary: A retrospective cross-sectional study involving 177,540 individuals in the Chinese population shows a nonlinear relationship between thyroid function parameters and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). Higher levels of free triiodothyronine (FT3) are associated with an increased risk of MAFLD when FT3 is less than 5.58pmol/L but a decreased risk when FT3 is greater than or equal to 5.58pmol/L. Additionally, higher levels of free tetra-iodothyronine (FT4) are associated with a decreased risk of MAFLD, while thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) concentration is positively associated with MAFLD risk.

Summary: This study analyzed the recent trends in the prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) in China and its age-related disparities in the healthy check-up population. The overall prevalence of AF remained stable at 0.4%-0.45% from 2012 to 2017, but showed an undesirable upward trend in the 35-44 age group. In addition to traditional risk factors, such as age ≥65 and coronary heart disease, elevated uric acid and impaired renal function were tightly correlated with AF in the population.
