Neuropathic dry eye is one of the most frequently seen complications after corneal refractive surgery, however, its incidence decreases in a significant manner along the first six months postoperative, reaching between 10 and 45% incidence. However, little is known on the inflammatory status of the ocular surface during this recovery process. We aim to analyze the clinical and tear molecule concentration changes along six months after advanced surface ablation for myopia correction, in a prospective study including 18 eyes of 18 subjects who bilaterally underwent advanced surface ablation corneal refractive surgery. Clinical variables (uncorrected distance visual acuity, symptoms, conjunctival hyperemia, tear osmolarity, tear stability, corneal fluorescein staining, conjunctival lissamine staining, Schirmer test, and corneal esthesiometry) and a panel of 23 pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines/chemokines concentration in tears preoperatively and at 1, 3 and 6 months postoperatively were evaluated. We found that uncorrected distance visual acuity improved significantly from baseline at 1-month visit, symptoms improved and tear osmolarity decreased significantly from baseline at 3-month visit and there was a decrease in mechanical corneal threshold between 1-month and 3- and 6-month visits. Regarding tear molecules, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-13, IL-17A, and IFN-gamma tear levels were significantly increased at all the three visits, compared to preoperative levels at V0; IL-2 and VEGF were also significantly increased at 1-month and 6-month visits, but not at 3-month visit, whereas IL-9 IL-10 and IL-12 were only significantly increased at 6-month visit. Although we found that there is a recovery in clinical variables at 6 months postoperatively (i.e. neuropathic dry eye was not developed in the sample), ocular surface homeostasis is not completely restored, as it can be seen by the changes in concentration of some pro and anti-inflammatory molecules measured in tears.

Summary: This study compared the improvement of ocular signs and symptoms in patients with moderate to severe dry eye disease using 0.30% sodium hyaluronate (0.30%HA) ocular gel and 0.18%HA eye drops. The results showed that both concentrations significantly improved corneal staining, with 0.30%HA demonstrating a faster effect on conjunctival epithelium healing. There was no difference between the two concentrations in terms of tear film break-up time or Schirmer test improvements. Both groups showed similar improvements in dry eye disease symptoms and satisfaction with treatment. The frequency of instillation was also similar for both groups.

Physical Exercise and the Hallmarks of Breast Cancer: A Narrative Review

Celia Garcia-Chico, Susana Lopez-Ortiz, Saul Penin-Grandes, Jose Pinto-Fraga, Pedro L. Valenzuela, Enzo Emanuele, Claudia Ceci, Grazia Graziani, Carmen Fiuza-Luces, Simone Lista, Alejandro Lucia, Alejandro Santos-Lozano

Summary: The prevalence of breast cancer is increasing and there is a need to investigate the molecular pathways that influence its progression. This review aims to describe the effects of physical exercise on breast cancer hallmarks, which are associated with the development of the disease. Regular physical exercise has positive effects on all major hallmarks of breast cancer and may help counteract its progression.

Uncertainty Quantification in Constitutive Models of Highway Bridge Components: Seismic Bars and Elastomeric Bearings

Francisco J. Pinto, Jose Toledo, Matias Birrell, Ramiro Bazaez, Francisco Hernandez, Rodrigo Astroza

Summary: Bridges are crucial structures in a country's logistic chain and designing them to be resilient is important. Performance-based seismic design (PBSD) using nonlinear Finite Element (FE) models can predict the response and potential damage of different structural components under earthquake excitations. This study proposes a Bayesian probabilistic framework to update the parameters of seismic bars and elastomeric bearings based on actual data from comprehensive experimental campaigns.

Validation and Determination of Physical Activity Intensity GT3X+ Cut-Points in Children and Adolescents with Physical Disabilities: Preliminary Results in a Cerebral Palsy Population

Carmen Matey-Rodriguez, Susana Lopez-Ortiz, Saul Penin-Grandes, Jose Pinto-Fraga, Pedro L. Valenzuela, Monica Pico, Carmen Fiuza-Luces, Simone Lista, Alejandro Lucia, Alejandro Santos-Lozano

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the accuracy of Evenson cut-points for estimating moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary behavior (SB) in children and adolescents with disabilities, as well as to define new equations for estimating energy expenditure (EE) in this population, particularly in those with cerebral palsy (CP). Specific GT3X+ cut-points were also defined for estimating MVPA in individuals with CP. The results indicate that using specific ActiGraph GT3X+ cut-points is accurate for estimating MVPA levels in children and adolescents with disabilities, especially those with CP, at least in laboratory conditions.

Winners do what they fear: exercise and peripheral arterial disease-an umbrella review

Saul Penin-Grandes, Susana Lopez-Ortiz, Sergio Maroto-Izquierdo, Hector Menendez, Jose Pinto-Fraga, Juan Martin-Hernandez, Simone Lista, Alejandro Lucia, Alejandro Santos-Lozano

Summary: This systematic review evaluates the effects of regular exercise in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) by summarizing published meta-analyses. The review finds that exercise has a positive impact on functional parameters and health-related quality of life in PAD patients. Supervised aerobic exercise is particularly effective in improving walking-related outcomes and pain, while resistance exercise is more effective for improving lower limb strength.

Summary: This study evaluates the safety, biocompatibility, and functionality of a new accommodative intraocular lens (IOL) in rabbit eyes. The results show that the new lens remained centered and had fewer complications compared to the control group. Functional studies revealed no significant differences between the two materials. Overall, the new IOL showed minimal local biological effects and is comparable to the control group.

Regulated cell death pathways in the sodium iodate model: Insights and implications for AMD

Mala Upadhyay, Vera L. Bonilha

Summary: The sodium iodate (NaIO3) model is a valuable tool in studying dry AMD and evaluating the retinal structure. Through extensive research, it has been found that the death of RPE cells caused by NaIO3 injection is closely related to vision loss in patients with dry AMD. Therefore, studying NaIO3 can provide insights into the mechanisms of RPE and photoreceptor cell death and contribute to understanding RPE degeneration in AMD.

Summary: We present a new experimental model for inducing retinal ganglion cell (RGC) dysfunction and degeneration in mice. This model allows for the reliable induction of RGC dysfunction and loss, with the resilience of the optic nerve being dependent on the age of the animal. The time-defined nature of the functional and structural changes observed in this model will facilitate the study of glial responses and the evaluation of neuroprotective treatments after intraocular pressure (IOP) injury.
