Summary: This study aimed to examine the prevalence of frailty in surgical patients and investigate whether age and sex modify the relationship between frailty and long-term mortality. A retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients who underwent cardiac surgery in Ontario, Canada, between 2008 and 2016. The study found a high prevalence of frailty in cardiac surgery patients and a significant association between frailty and long-term mortality. The impact of frailty on mortality was found to be stronger in younger patients.

Summary: Preoperative frailty is significantly associated with increased long-term mortality after elective vascular surgery, with frail patients having a higher risk of mortality compared to nonfrail patients. This highlights the importance of assessing preoperative frailty in decision-making for vascular surgery patients.

Summary: This study examines the impact of frailty on surgical procedures and outcomes in patients with ovarian cancer. The results show that patients with high frailty scores have worse postoperative morbidity, progression-free survival, and overall survival.

Summary: This study compared clinical data and follow-up outcomes of patients with mixed ICH, CAA-ICH, and HTN-ICH, and found that mixed ICH has a higher risk of unfavorable vascular outcome compared to HTN-ICH. The presence of cortical superficial siderosis (cSS) in mixed ICH independently predicts vascular events, suggesting a detrimental effect due to coexisting CAA.

Summary: This study aimed to measure changes in functional status among frail and non-frail patients undergoing vascular surgery. The results showed that frail patients had lower levels of functional ability both before and after surgery, and this impairment persisted for up to 2 years.

Summary: Frailty is an important factor that influences the clinical outcome of acute treatment of stroke, predicting short-term and long-term mortality and neurological recovery. Further studies are needed to evaluate the risk and benefit of reperfusion treatment in the growing elderly frail population.

Summary: The study did not find a relationship between BMI and frailty among hospitalized older adults. However, overweight patients had a survival advantage if they were non-frail or vulnerable. Further longitudinal studies are needed to assess the interaction between frailty and BMI in older adults.

Summary: This study aims to longitudinally explore the impact of multiple long-term conditions (LTCs) on frailty progression, separately for males and females. Using the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing data, a functional frailty measure (FFM) was used to examine the determinants of frailty progression over 18 years. The results showed that FFM increased with the number of LTCs for both males and females, but the acceleration of FFM increase was different. For males, it accelerated with one LTC or more, while for females, it accelerated with two LTCs or more. Therefore, suitable intervention should be planned for elderly individuals with two or more health conditions.

Summary: Renal denervation is emerging as a promising non-drug treatment for resistant hypertension, but there is still a lack of evaluation on its long-term blood pressure control effect. Further research is needed to address the limitations and compare the antihypertensive effects of different renal denervation systems.

Summary: Research revealed that women and normal walking speed were independent factors associated with discontinuation of outpatient rehabilitation services due to COVID-19. Additionally, individuals who ceased rehabilitation services exhibited lower levels of exercise and higher feelings of fatigue compared to those who continued.

Summary: Long-term surgical outcomes of patients who underwent resection for Wilms tumor and neuroblastoma were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with bowel obstruction requiring laparotomy were higher than literature norms, especially in the early postoperative period for Wilms tumor patients and remotely in neuroblastoma patients. Patients who underwent thoracotomy for neuroblastoma have a higher risk of scoliosis and Horner syndrome.

Summary: Complications have a significant impact on long-term survival after oesophagectomy for cancer, especially the cumulative effect of multiple complications. Interestingly, multiple minor complications have a worse effect on survival than major complications.
