Decades of large-scale production of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have resulted in their ubiquitous presence in the environment worldwide. Similarly to other persistent and bioaccumulative organic contaminants, some PFASs, particularly the long-chain congeners, can be biomagnifled via food webs, making top predators vulnerable to elevated PFAS exposure. In this study, we measured seven classes of PFASs in bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) eggs for the first time. The eggs (n = 22) were collected from the North American Great Lakes in 2000-2012. The ranges of total concentrations of perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids (Sigma PFSAs) and perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (Sigma PFCAs) were 30.5-1650 and 5.4-216 ng/g wet weight (ww), respectively. In addition to these traditional PFAS compounds, 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonic acid (6:2 FTS; median: 15.7 ng/g ww), perfluoro-4-ethylcyclohexanesulfonic acid (Sigma PFECHS; 0.22 ng/g ww), and 8-chloro-perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (CI-PFOS, detected in wildlife for the first time; 0.53 ng/g ww) were also frequently detected. Bald eagle eggs from breeding areas located less than 8 km from a Great Lake shoreline or tributary had significantly greater total PFAS concentrations (Sigma PFASs) than those from breeding areas located further than 8 km (p < 0.05). In these samples, Sigma PFASs rivalled the total concentration of brominated flame retardants, and were significantly greater than those of several other organic contaminants, such as dechlorane-related compounds, organophosphate esters, and flame retardant metabolites. Distribution, behavior, and risk assessment of chlorinated paraffins in paddy plants throughout whole growth cycle

Xinyu Du, Bo Yuan, Jun Li, Ge Yin, Yanling Qiu, Jianfu Zhao, Xuchuan Duan, Yan Wu, Tian Lin, Yihui Zhou

Summary: Rice plants provide staple food for 3 billion people worldwide. This study investigates the environmental fate and behavior of chlorinated paraffins (CPs), a high-volume production emerging contaminant, in the paddy ecosystem. The results indicate that short-chain and medium-chain CPs can be translocated from soils to paddy tissue, posing an increased bioaccumulative potential. The risk evaluation suggests that the intake of medium-chain CPs and the associated risks dominate the total exposure to CPs through rice ingestion. This is the first report on the occurrence, fate, and risk assessment of all CPs classes in paddy ecosystems.

Sorption of representative organic contaminants on microplastics: Effects of chemical physicochemical properties, particle size, and biofilm presence

Wenxuan Cui, Robert C. Hale, Yichao Huang, Fengli Zhou, Yan Wu, Xiaolin Liang, Yang Liu, Hongli Tan, Da Chen

Summary: Microplastic pollution is a global concern. This study investigates the sorption of various organic contaminants on HDPE and PVC microplastics under saline conditions. The sorption coefficients varied for different chemicals and microplastics, and were largely influenced by hydrophobicity. Particle size did not significantly affect sorption isotherms but influenced equilibrium time and maximum sorption, likely due to surface area. Biofilms on HDPE microplastics enhanced contaminant sorption capacity. These findings provide new insights into chemical-microplastic interactions in marine environments.

Amino antioxidants: A review of their environmental behavior, human exposure, and aquatic toxicity

Ruihe Jin, Marta Venier, Qiqing Chen, Jing Yang, Min Liu, Yan Wu

Summary: This review summarizes the current knowledge of amino antioxidants (AAOs) including their production and usage, environmental occurrence, bioavailability, human exposure, and aquatic toxicity. Previous studies have shown widespread distribution of AAOs in various environmental matrixes, and their degradation products have also been detected at high levels. Human exposure to AAOs primarily occurs through dust ingestion and air inhalation, while limited studies have been conducted on other exposure pathways and AAO burdens in human tissue. AAOs have shown toxic effects on aquatic organisms, and the toxicity of degradation products differs from their precursors. Future research should focus on elucidating AAO exposure in humans and the health risks associated with it, as well as studying the effects of complex mixtures of these chemicals.

Amino accelerators and antioxidants in sediments from the Dong Nai River System, Vietnam: Distribution and influential factors

Ruihe Jin, Yue Li, Yoshiki Saito, Zhanghua Wang, Thi Kim Oanh Ta, Van Lap Nguyen, Jing Yang, Min Liu, Yan Wu

Summary: This study investigated the spatial distribution of 15 Amino accelerators and antioxidants (AAL/Os) and 5 AAO transformation products (AAOTPs) in sediments from the Dong Nai River System (DNRS) in Vietnam. The results showed higher levels of these compounds in downstream and primary tributary sediments, suggesting their cumulative sedimentation towards the estuarine region. The characteristics of the sediments, such as total organic carbon (TOC) content and grain sizes, were significantly correlated with the burdens of these compounds, indicating their preferential partitioning into fine and TOC-rich matter. This research provides valuable insights into the environmental behavior of AAL/Os and AAOTPs in Asian aquatic systems and highlights the need for further evaluation of their impacts on wildlife and public health.

Insight into chemical features of migrated additives from plastics and associated risks to estuarine ecosystem

Qiqing Chen, Zhuo Gao, Yan Wu, Haifeng Li, Jing Jiang, Yan Yang, Li Xu, Huahong Shi

Summary: Distinct hydrodynamic conditions in estuaries create a hotspot of plastic and additive pollution, but the impact of specific estuarine weathering on additive migration remains unclear. We simulated estuarine conditions to investigate the release of migrated plastic additives (MPAs) from different plastics. Wave actions significantly enhanced the leaching of MPAs, with more additives detected in plastic bag leachates. Nonionic surfactants, octylphenol polyethoxylates (OPEOn), showed high toxicity in packaging bag leachates, affecting zebrafish hatching and causing cardiovascular disorders. Overall, plastic leachates, especially from plastic bags, pose significant risks to estuarine ecosystems.

Heather Schwartz-Narbonne, Chunjie Xia, Anna Shalin, Heather D. Whitehead, Diwen Yang, Graham F. Peaslee, Zhanyun Wang, Yan Wu, Hui Peng, Arlene Blum, Marta Venier, Miriam L. Diamond

Summary: A comprehensive analysis of Canadian food packaging used for fast foods (n = 42) revealed that 55% of the samples contained <3580, 19% contained 3580-10,800, and 26% > 10,800 μg F/m(2) of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Targeted analysis of samples with high total F identified 4-15 individual PFAS in each sample, with 6:2 fluorotelomer methacrylate (FTMAc) and 6:2 fluorotelomer alcohol (FTOH) being the most dominant. Nontargeted analysis detected 22 PFAS from 6 different groups, including degradation products of FTOH. The use of PFAS in food packaging, such as compostable bowls, is a regrettable substitution for single-use plastic food packaging.

Exploring a chemical input free advanced oxidation process based on nanobubble technology to treat organic micropollutants

Bangguo Wang, Lijing Wang, Wenxi Cen, Tao Lyu, Peter Jarvis, Yang Zhang, Yuanxun Zhang, Yinghui Han, Lei Wang, Gang Pan, Kaili Zhang, Wei Fan

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility and mechanisms of a chemical-free nanobubble-based AOP for treating organic micropollutants in water. The results show that the oxygen nanobubble AOP has a significantly higher removal efficiency compared to air and nitrogen nanobubbles. The treatment performance is not affected by pH and the presence of ions. Higher initial concentrations of the micropollutant lead to slower treatment processes, but similar removal performance is achieved in the end. The presence of organic matter reduces the removal rate of the micropollutant. The results have practical feasibility for water and wastewater treatment.
