Summary: The study found that the co-use of alcohol with nonmedical benzodiazepines and opioids is relatively rare among Brazilians, but identified potential risk factors such as mental health disorders and tobacco use. These results are important for further research on substance use globally and understanding the changing dynamics and international markets of prescription drugs.

Summary: Substance use during pregnancy poses risks to both maternal and neonatal health, and multiple substance use is common. However, the effects of combined substance exposures during pregnancy are not well understood. This report discusses the activities of the CDC and partners in surveillance, routine screening, and prevention of polysubstance use during pregnancy, highlighting the need for further research and intervention to improve the health outcomes of pregnant individuals and their children.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between personal networks and polysubstance use among people who use drugs (PWUD) in a medium sized city, finding that multiplex ties are as strongly associated with polysubstance use as simple co-drug use relationships. The concept of supportive social contacts and risky social contacts is deemed incomplete, as risky behaviors are often introduced and further developed in a social context.

Summary: This study found that young adults with comorbid AUD/DRUG and those with AUD only belong to different populations, while those with AUD only and those without AUD or DRUG histories are similar. The comorbid AUD/DRUG group showed distinct risk factors, AUD course features, and outcomes, and had a higher overall SUD severity.

Summary: There is a widespread presence of substance-related content, particularly those promoting or actively depicting substance use, on social media platforms. This content may have concerning influences on attitudes, behaviors, and risk perceptions, especially among adolescents and young adults who are the most vulnerable and heaviest users of social media.

Summary: This study compared negative alcohol-related sexual experiences among individuals who used alcohol only, alcohol plus marijuana, and alcohol plus marijuana and stimulants. Participants using multiple substances reported a higher likelihood and average number of negative alcohol-related sexual experiences in the past 3 months. Those using alcohol plus marijuana had a higher likelihood of negative alcohol-related sexual experiences compared to those using alcohol only. These findings suggest an increase in the number and risk of negative alcohol-related sexual experiences with the use of multiple substances.

Summary: This study validated a new tool called MI-USE that assesses motivations for substance use across different types of substances. The MI-USE model includes a General Factor and eight motive-specific factors that capture unique motivations for substance use. The measure's construct validity and internal consistency were supported, indicating it is a reliable and valid tool for assessing diverse substance use motivations.

Summary: The study found that in Canada, 10.3% of people aged 15 and older smoked cigarettes within the past 30 days, 11% used cannabis, and 29% used both cannabis and cigarettes. These findings may be helpful in developing strategies for prevention policies and programs for polysubstance use.

Summary: The study explores predictors of completing short-term residential treatment among persons with primary opioid use disorder who co-use substances like alcohol, benzodiazepines, cocaine, or methamphetamines. Findings show that the opioid and methamphetamine co-use group had higher rates of female, unemployed, current injection drug use, living in the Midwest and South, not receiving medications for OUD, not completing treatment, and other variables. Logistic regression models indicate that groups co-using opioids with alcohol, benzodiazepines, or cocaine have higher odds of completing treatment compared to the opioid and methamphetamine co-use group.

Summary: The coronavirus pandemic in the Netherlands led to an intelligent lockdown in spring 2020, affecting substance use patterns and creating new challenges in addiction prevention and care. A web survey of over 6,000 participants revealed varied changes in substance use, with some discontinued, decreased, unchanged, increased, or recommenced use. Timely monitoring of these changing patterns is crucial for informing prevention services in the field.

Summary: This study examined the association between parental SUDs and offspring functional connectivity, finding that FH+ adolescents showed stronger connectivity in certain brain regions related to emotion regulation and valuation of external stimuli. The increased risk observed in families with a history of SUD may be due to altered neurocircuity beyond what is explained by externalizing psychopathology alone.

Summary: Despite being considered a core process underlying psychological dysfunction, high delay discounting rates are only modestly related to measures of psychological dysfunction, raising concerns about its utility as a marker for specific disorders. Empirical evidence does not support the generalizability of discounting rates to other decisions, questioning its use as a summary measure of individual decision-making patterns.

Summary: This study found that young adults with AUD have slower rates of learning to inhibit behavior that resulted in the loss of money, which may reflect the same processes that account for their difficulties learning to modify their drinking habits to avoid negative consequences. The results also suggest that measuring PAL rate by focusing on the rate of learning early in the task may be a better index of PAL learning than simply looking at overall false alarm rate.
